If you think about what you need to be happy, you might think about achieving something in your career, or a relationship, or something you own. All of these things have something in common - they're conditions for happiness. As human beings we naturally get attached to goals and the status quo.

The bad news is that not everything in our career goes as we would like, relationships can end, possessions break and are lost. The good news is that you can enjoy what you have right now and be happy, even if the only thing that you possess is the ability to breathe in and out.

By letting go of our attachment to things that we believe we need to be happy we can actually live calmer, happier lives. Of course its great to enjoy the things we own, the people we love and our work - but accepting that life will change and that we don't need external conditions for happiness reduces the suffering we feel when things don't go as we hope.

The most beautiful thing about meditation.

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 09:32 PM PST

The most beautiful thing is that there ain't nothing to it but to do it. Ground yourself, be present, and breath. Go where you will with it. Lotus position is not even needed, just sit comfortably. More people could do it and more people should do it. You could be a spiritual person and nobody even needs to know.

Too much perfectionism. Convinced that it's poison.

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 12:53 AM PST

I'd always tell myself I can't meditate unless the situation is ideal -- in my room, haven't eaten in a few hours, timing it for at least 30 minutes.

And you know what? That didn't stick. And I'm beginning to realize why. It's because I wouldn't so much as bother unless I perceived the situation to be perfect. If it wasn't? I wouldn't do it at all.

It's just such a garbage mentality. The situation won't always be perfect. Quite frankly, when I'm done with this post, I can just spin my computer chair around and enter a meditation session. Simple as that.

Clinging to perfectionism has only served to my detriment.

Giving thanks, Being grateful in the Present Moment

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 02:46 AM PST

Yes, to be grateful, thankful for everything you have, everything you do, for those you love and who love you. And don't just be grateful on a special Thanksgiving day, not just once a month or once a week. Be thankful everyday for the roof over your head, for family, friends and close acquaintances, for any animal companions you have, for every beat of your heart and for every breath you take! And most important, be grateful for this present moment. Learn to live and be in the present moment through meditation.

If you read this then you are on a good path, and we hope you will be safe! stay healthy! and spread the good! and that your journey is filled with love, true happiness and self-discovery! And may you everyday in every way get better and better! – Paine 🙏🏻

    Body Scan right before sleep.

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 10:25 PM PST

    Hi Guys,

I am wondering, if anyone here has experimented with doing a quick body scan (https://www.mindful.org/beginners-body-scan-meditation/) right before going to sleep as a way of getting into sleep faster. I have phases where I sleep great and then phases where I struggle to get into sleep and I was wondering if incorporating this as part of my sleep ritual could be beneficial.

I would be experimenting with over the next few days but was keen to hear others experience with this.

Being mindful while smoking and smoking while meditating

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 03:25 AM PST

I've been smoking for 3 years and I'm addicted.

I've been practicing meditation for about 3 months now, and recently I started trying to be mindful as I smoke. I try to feel every sensation that occurs as I smoke, noticing how I crave the cigarette and how it affects the mind and body. It has actually quite drastically changed my relationship to cigarettes.

Today I went to a hill to have a cigarette, but decided to meditate first. I sat down with my back straight, closed my eyes and focused on my breath. 10 minutes in, I decided to have a cigarette as I was meditating, so I lighted it with my eyes still closed. At first I noticed the burning sensation in my throat when inhaling the smoke. Then my heart started beating faster, gradually making my whole body tremble. It felt like I was getting sick. It was mindblowingly uncomfortable to be so present in my body when smoking. Even though it felt horrible, I lighted another one to really experience it. At this point my body was so restless and my heart was beating like crazy. It felt impossible to keep my back straight for any longer so i sank down and put out the cigarette.

To anyone struggling with nicotine addiction, I can highly recommend involving your mindfulness practice. cigarettes for me used to be something you just do, when hanging with friends or whatever. The craving we experience is a lack of understanding what smoking really feels like. We understand that we get a little dizzy and so on, but being mindful when smoking completely changes the perspective. It changes from "let me go enjoy a smoke" to something like "let me go unpleasantly inhale some smoke that makes me tremble and feel restless and sick."

Don't try to force quitting, quit when you fully understand it and don't desire it anymore.

Hope this can help someone! Good luck with it:)

I've meditated everyday for over a year but don't feel much change

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 05:28 AM PST

    Hi guys,

This isn't a post about "why don't I feel enlightened"

I'm a highly anxious adult, possibly 'ADHD' whether that's even real and have racing thoughts and penetrating negative self-talk. However I've managed to meditate every day for over a year, maybe nearer 1.5 and I don't feel a big change.

Meditation has become something I do not for results but as part of my routine like keeping a daily journal, I do it because my mind needs this quiet time whether I feel like it or not, like cleaning your car, it doesn't improve fuel economy

I'm not expecting anything from meditation, sometimes it feels great and sometimes it's a struggle but I still don't feel 'different'.

Current routine: Morning: 10 mins - Evening: 25mins. Last month it was just 20 mins in the evening so I'm slowly building up to hopefully obtaining a full one hour.

Even if I don't feel a big change, I'm hoping I'm still healing myself somehow.

There's a question in here somewhere but knowing that meditation isn't something you accomplish, it's hard to ask "how should I feel"

I'd like to think that somewhere in my mind it's healing somehow even if I don't notice it.

    Thank you.

    Am I doing something wrong?

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 09:48 PM PST

I've tried to meditate for 20 min, once a day for the last 6 days. So far though, I emerge from each session feeling like I just spent 20 min trying not to think. I don't feel anxious or anything when starting out, but my mind just keeps rolling the entire session. I try to come back to focusing on my breathing, etc. and it works for a short while, then something else comes into my head. The last two evenings, I feel like most of the 20 min is spent thinking, "Am I doing this right?"

I'm committed to making meditation part of my lifestyle, so I'm wondering if other newbies have struggled with this and how long it take before it feels like you really "got it."

Does your meditation have phases? If so what are they?

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 04:17 AM PST

So I've recently getting into meditation and started getting interested in stuff life lucid dreaming and astral projection. I won't say I really "feel" that sensation of meditating and stuff, but I'm getting there I think.

I initially started with guided meditations and I'm now starting to do my own things and was wondering if your meditation has "phases" too.

    For me it usually goes:

    -Get comfortable

    -Three deep breaths

-Relax whole body starting from the eyes going down to the toes

-Feel the touching points between you and the floor

-Start thinking unlabeled, let thoughts flow through

How do I leave out expectations from meditation when my whole reason for meditating is to reduce stress, feel less depressed, ext...?

I have always been puzzled by the statement "leave your expectations out of meditation." Maybe I'm approaching it the wrong way. Looking for some insight. Thanks

Can I have some recommendations on tips to fall into meditation?

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 12:05 AM PST

Just meditated for the first time!

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 06:24 AM PST

I have had a blockage that has prevented my ego to let me meditate, until today. It feels like a real victory. My goal is to do it 5 minutes two times a day in the beginning.

This is a part of my journey from being a broken person with lots of issues and trauma, and a huge ego - to becoming something else, I guess. I hope to be able to deal with my trauma and my adhd and be able to just calm down and focus on what I choose to focus on. Thanks to this subreddit for being an inspiration.

I am so happy and relieved now. It has taken me years to be able to get going with this.

    Stillness during meditation

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 04:51 AM PST

I usually practise mediation in crossed legged sitting position. I start with a straight spine. But after sometime I realise that my back is arched , then i correct it .

Question is can we do that ? or just continue what ever the position is ? or consciously make sure your back is straight always ? will moving during meditation resets the practise ? do u get saliva build up in the mouth? can you swallow it or just hold it ?

My mind is extremely overactive and I have a hard time controlling my emotions.

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 12:12 AM PST

What I mean is, if something bad happens to my during the day, my mind will not shut off for the rest of the day. it will kick into overdrive about every negative thing. It kick starts my neuroticism and it just doesn't shut up. I hate it. I want to quiet my mind because I cannot handle the stress.

I want to know if Mindfulness meditation can help with this, I want more control over my mind.

    Help a newbie please

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 09:32 PM PST

I'm new to the world of meditation. I'm not gonna count the benefits I'm having from meditation, we all know that right? instead, I'm asking for some help if you can, some tips or something, so that I overcome some difficulties I'm having while meditating. and I think the method I'm using is mindfulness, I'm practicing with waking up app. and I know I need to practice and practice makes perfect, I'm just hoping for tip, some small details that let me grow 🙏

first problem I'm facing is, I cannot, for the life of mine, separate myself from my thought. no matter how hard I try, I cannot be the watcher of my thoughts. is it supposed to be that hard and it's like a super advanced level that can't be achieved so easily and it's normal to cannot can? :D

second problem I'm facing that mostly relates to first one is that after I find myself lost in thought, I always, and I mead ALWAYS judge myself hard. I know it's counter productive and I shouldn't do that, but I just cannot stop. how yall pull that?

and my third one may sound silly. most of the times when I meditate and calm my mind(I have very, VER busy mind and only after I learned to meditate I understood how busy it is and how that's actully hurtful) I feel super sleepy, sometimes I even fall asleep, which makes it almost impossible to continue. is it normal also? and what can I do about it?

I would really really appreciate it if you guys could help me out. you guys are all I have since none of my friends and family meditate and I cannot ask anyone else for help. a bit lonely really. anyways thank you guys whether you help or not, at least you have read it to the end 🙏🏿🖤

Popular breathing tips in beautiful 3D environment

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 03:05 AM PST

I worked on this as a side project because I wanted to test the great new 3D engine for the browser - babylon.js. It quickly grew into something I actually wanted to do for a while - a free, easy to use, and beautifully visualized breathing techniques app. Recently I moved the project to this new domain - https://breathing.tips and refactored a bit so that it's super easy to add new tips with minimal HTML skills. I've been sharing it with people here and I'm getting pretty positive feedback so far, so I decided to share it here as well. I know it's self promotion, but I hope people here will relate. It's also free. I don't get anything from that. Let me know what you like (or not). Here's what I think is cool about it: - Free & open source - Minimalistic and easy to use. No apps, no logins, no charts - Looks great on both mobile and desktop Check it out here: https://breathing.tips The most popular tips, it seems, are the anxiety and relaxation ones. What other technique would you like to see?

Hello Meditators, are there any other activities other than meditation which gives you the same kind of joy and tranquility? please tell which is it and why it gives that feeling.

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 02:12 AM PST

So, I am a beginner in meditation and mindfulness practices. ( been doing it for last 2 months, everyday 30 minutes. ) I asked this question so I could know and likely follow other activities which help to give more mindfulness-awareness. I like reading books and while I am reading, I feel more mindful than any other activities I do. Thus, I would love to know which different activities make all of you joyous and live.

The nice thing about meditation, is if you really do it, you’re never bored. Because you realize that “doing nothing” is something to do.

My experience with a consistent mantra of "focus/follow peace, contentment, and tranquility only/solely"

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 06:32 PM PST

First, the mantra does vary, but always involves some coherent combination of the words above and "only" or "solely." I had considered adding "only/solely" to my mantra in the past, but I thought this would be impractical. How does one do this without neglecting the many other "important" things in this world? How does one survive? After using the mantra without "only/solely" for a couple months, I found myself getting carried away in positive emotions, and eventually I lost track of inner peace and it took me a little to get back to that place. I finally decided to give the modified mantra a try, and it has made a drastic difference in not only my ability to maintain a more consistent meditative state, but I've found that I do all the normal things in life, only much better and with more focus. So as often as I can remember, I repeat that mantra. Thoughts, emotions, and sensations still grab my attention in between, and this is a good thing, but I always CHOOSE to direct my attention back to my mantra which reminds me of my new dedication in life. Other things come and go naturally, but what I choose to concern and fill my consciousness with is with focusing on inner peace, contentment, tranquility, and/or any other words which mean that neutral inner place. This seems to have made all the difference so far. Any similar experiences on this or thoughts?

    Little tip that I learned.

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 05:02 PM PST

When you are taking deep breaths, allow your jaw to drop and relax, and open up your throat. Do not open up your mouth; keep breathing through your nose but also breath 'as if' your mouth was open. This allows maximum flow and allows you be more connected to your senses since it engages with olfactory and taste-related experience. Happy meditating!

    I was Levitating!

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 08:57 AM PST

So the other day while I was meditating I felt like I was levitating. Let me explain

I sit cross legged when I meditate. Sitting cross legged is very uncomfortable for me as I get pain in my ankles. So about 4 minutes in to the mediation I noticed the pain was gone in my ankles. Then I noticed I didn't feel the floor beneath me. I WAS LEVITATING. My eyes were closed the whole time so I don't know for sure and I didn't want to kill the magic. But I felt great. I didn't feel anything in my body it was like my soul escaped from my body. It was crazy.
