    Chandra Om yoga cult

    Posted: 21 Dec 2020 09:52 AM PST

Two months ago I posted this on r/cults, but it is even more relevant on r/yoga

The yoga world is filled with stories of abuse and manipulation. Please be aware and skeptical of anyone who puts on the airs of a "guru" even if they don't use that term. YOU DO NOT NEED A GURU. This is my story of abuse.

Please see the original link for comments from other survivors.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/cults/comments/ixt6dz/chandra_om_cult/

The following is based on what I experienced and witnessed while studying with Chandra Om of Cary, North Carolina.

She goes by the name Chandra Om, Amber Nucatola, Amber Om. She uses additional names that are not her own. Often the made-up names and emails are used to berate, chastise, and manipulate for her advantage. She can recreate herself. Be aware.

She ran NC School of Yoga in Raleigh, North Carolina and Shanti Niketan Ashram in Cary, North Carolina. She claimed to be the senior disciple of Dharma Mittra.

Chandra seemed kind and charming when I met her. As time went on some of her students would tell me how to act. "Chandra likes this." "Chandra doesn't like this." "You're doing this incorrectly." Later it would evolve into how things "have to" be. You never wanted to upset or disturb the "guru" / "mother" (Chandra).

It was an odd arrangement but if you could pull off all of this "selfless service" you would evolve spiritually- maybe one day reaching enlightenment. It was understood that Chandra was enlightened. And if you couldn't understand what was going on it was only because you weren't "enlightened" yet.

If Chandra ever had an issue with you she'd tell someone (another student or her husband) and the person would go to you to show you the error of your ways. You would then apologize profusely for a total non-issue and go crawling back to Chandra promising to do better. I did this. Countless others did as well. Once Chandra felt you were a more secure bet, she'd berate, chastise and abuse you directly. I was physically, mentally, emotionally and financially abused.

She used free labor from her students to care for her school and then to remodel her ashram. Her students ran the school, then the ashram, gave yoga classes, workshops, teacher trainings all without salaries while she kept the profit. It was called "karma yoga" or selfless service to God. She used them to care for and improve the ashram which was a property in her own name which she sold in August 2020 for $137,000 more than she purchased it for. She mislead people and they thought they were donating to her non-profit, but the property was always in her own name, never in the non-profit's. She had her assistant raise funds and then had students physically construct a screen porch at her personal residence. Again, free labor to make her personal property more valuable.

She would have students do extreme diets, including fasts. She would deprive people of proper nourishment. She'd have people stay in seclusion. She'd tell people to break ties with friends or family. She'd make ridiculous requests and then threaten students- often with something which would impact their own evolution or that of the community. "If this doesn't happen, the ashram will close." "If this doesn't happen, people will commit suicide." "If this doesn't happen, you'll wind up like <insert name of a person she considers a failure>." Chandra Om did not use physical chains, but her brainwashing, lies and manipulation were so powerful that it was unnecessary.

After years of abuse and emailed lies from her assistant and friend, "Rebecca" (who supposedly lived in upstate New York and worked painting ceramics) Chandra's students found out that it was all a lie. One of many they had been told. It was Chandra all along pretending to have an assistant.

She was extremely manipulative and controlling. She had a weird fascination with "godsons". She would align those children with her and would try to make them feel angry towards their parents. She attempted to control all aspects of students lives (diet, family, sex, job, shopping, free time). She would often pit people against one another- trying to divide families and friends so that she would be #1.

She blatantly lied to students, family and friends. From seemingly unimportant things ("I'm out of town") to bigger things ("So and so was deathly ill but was cured" by a combination of natural cures and Chandra's mystical healing abilities supposedly).

Chandra Om lied to and abused yoga students and others. She used her power and peoples genuine search for spiritual evolution to control and manipulate them.

Any Canadian yoga teachers out there with Yoga Alliance certification?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2020 06:29 PM PST

I'm gonna guess no, but I'll ask anyway. I've been offered online to get my Yoga Alliance certification following my 200 YTT. Reading online and on this subreddit, the consensus is no as it's not worth it and is never asked, but prove me wrong internet. Should I get my Yoga Alliance certification? Does it matter in Canada?

    Thanks!

    Sore Knee Advice

    Posted: 21 Dec 2020 05:22 PM PST

Hey I know nothing beats real medical advice for my injury, but I'm seeking help adjusting my practice to keep it from happening again. I've been doing yoga regularly, 3-7 times a week for a few years now. I've always encountered problems with Utkatasana / chair pose with a sore left knee the next day but never during the pose. I managed this by keeping my shins totally perpendicular to the floor (ie knee over ankle) as much as possible and it helps, but I am now day two with fairly significant discomfort and it's making me nervous to practice. Two things I might think contributed a) Warrior I where the instructor (video, my practice is all at home now) reminded us to square our hips forward and my research indicates this might be wrong and that the hip and knee should always be aligned so that hips are not-quite but nearly squared forward. Secondly, I did a terrific yin class with Corina Benner (I just love her energy) through Yoga Int'l and I did a half lotus posture with my top leg on a block. I definitely kept my foot flexed for this but there was some tension 100%. Any thoughts, ideas about what's happening and what I should avoid? I'm actually doing my YTT200 atm, so I have the anatomy books out, but thought I'd shout out for advice. Tia!

    Does your spine crack too?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2020 09:53 AM PST

I've noticed that on days when I do yoga, a few hours after my practice, if I twist my spine or forward fold my back will crack. I'll hear several vertebrae crack at once. I don't force it and it doesn't hurt. Wondering if that happens to anyone else?

    Loose Fitting Clothes for Yoga?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2020 07:58 PM PST

When I first did yoga in the late 90s/early 2000s, it was recommended that you wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes. Like, that's where the idea of "yoga pants" came from, before the days of leggings. Your clothes should be neither baggy nor tight.

Nowadays, nearly everyone wears leggings. However, I'm convinced that this is not very good for you. Mainly because I believe that if my legs are being compressed by leggings, that means they are not settling into a pose the way they should (e.g. pigeon). They also tend to fall asleep a bit more easily.

But I have never heard this from any real sources. So I'm curious, are there any teachers or schools of yoga that discourage leggings?

Kind of overwhelmed by the many new things to learn and not sure what kind of routine to follow

    Posted: 21 Dec 2020 12:15 PM PST

    Hey everyone,

M30 here. I just started my first beginner sessions of Yoga at home. I'm in Construction and have been dealing with tons of pain. My knees and feet, as well as my hands can regularly give me issues. For the last week I've started a daily stretching routine which has now turned into me doing Yoga.

From what I'm gathering there's stretching exercises, strengthening, such and such. That's where I'm kind of lost. I've taken to youtube to try out different routines but it's kinda like going in the gym and just pushing and pulling weights for random body parts with no idea of why I'm doing what I'm doing. My harmstrings and calves are super tight so that's been a big focus.

Should I do a few weeks of muscle stretching before strengthening? Combine the two? Any help appreciated

    Best bolster for restorative practice?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2020 03:45 PM PST

Hello everyone! I'm in the market for a rectangular, cotton bolster with a removable cover. I have seen lots of recommendations for hugger mugger and manduka, except hugger mugger's covers are not removable and manduka is a suede material. I am debating between halfmoon and kakaos, but am open to any suggestions! Thank you :)

    Working up to handstand

    Posted: 21 Dec 2020 03:39 PM PST

Hi all. I've been practicing yoga for a little under 2 years and have progressed to a tripod headstand and more recently a forearm headstand. I would really like to progress to a full forearm stand and handstand next but I'm a little unsure of how to. I was wondering if anyone had any drill routines they used in order to get there! TIA!

Going for the solstice 108 sun salutations

    Posted: 21 Dec 2020 08:43 AM PST

I tried this the first time on the Autumn Equinox this year and abandoned it much too early. This solstice, I'm trying again, in sets, just to test myself and how I've grown this year. For reference, I've been practicing on and off for years, but like many of us, recommitted to yoga in March and have kept up a near-daily practice since. I primarily practice vinyasa, with some yin and restorative mixed in.

My old personal trainer sometimes had me break things up this way in the past (in strength training/free weights), so I'm going for "sets" of 1/2 (54), then 1/4 (27), then 1/8-ish (14) and 1/8-ish (13). I honestly don't think I could do the 108 in one session.

In the first set of 54, I started sweating around sun salutation 20, and was drenched by 40. I had to switch from classic chaturanga to knees-chest-chin around 15. After I finished 54 I honestly almost felt a little high and spacey - was difficult to start my workday.

Just now, approximately 2 hours later, I completed the set of 27. Some effects that I didn't expect are my quads are burning, which rarely happens during my normal practice. The heels of my hands are also feeling a bit chafed. My mat is a Gaiam with a kind of flattened bubble wrap texture on it - it's the best I've found to prevent skidding/slipping, but I think it's a detriment to this type of very repetitive motion with a lot of weight on the hands.

    I'll update when I finish!

Edit: Just finished the last 27 in one go and treated myself to an extra long savasana. Feeling pretty blissed out now. If you're considering going for it, I recommend it!

Experience with YogaRenew online YTT? Or other online courses?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2020 01:09 PM PST

Looking to take an online YTT to keep myself sane and motivated. I plan to take an in person training but realistically don't see that happening until 2022 or later. I figure an online course like YogaRenew that is YA certified would be a good thing to try out, especially as I'm still at home. The course is about $500

Has anyone completed this course? Thoughts and advice? Or have you taken a different online YTT (within the last 8 months) that you really enjoyed?

EDIT: Yes, I understand the benefits of the in person training and in NO WAY am I comparing the two or using online YTT as sole certification. The truth is I dont know what 2022 will hold. There's opportunity now to get (some) training and certification so why not? It would only help me when I eventually do in person training.

Is it possible to do too much yoga??

    Posted: 21 Dec 2020 07:27 AM PST

Theoretically here. Let's say one is very gentle and aware of their body, and uses restorative long hold techniques. The intentional use is as a meditative yogic discipline, as well as general body flexible and chi dispersion. Could one hurt their body for being in practice for 8+ hours/day?? what about 12, or 16??

Should one build up for this? For example distance runners are supposed to increase their distance at a certain rate to avoid injury. Running is an impact sport and it's important to build muscle in certain areas before pushing it too hard. Is yoga like that?? Common sense says yes, but also no lol. What do y'all Yogi's think??

Help me come up with a name for my company? Yoga, dance, fire, etc.

    Posted: 21 Dec 2020 02:32 PM PST

Hi guys, I am a new yoga teacher and fire performing artist in Key West, FL. I also am getting my real estate liscense. My name is Jenna. (I have energy to do all these things at once. !!)

I want to create a business page. I'm guessing it would be the best to have one for yoga/performance and one for Real Estate. "Jenna Flows" is too common. "Yoga with Jenna" is boring. Jenna YogaDance is to the point, but a little silly. Cuban influence is strong here so I thought. "J Cucubanos" (Spanish for Jenna Firefly") Also here in Key West we have worms that light up in the ocean, but "Jenna Glow worm" is stupid. I want something to do with the nature of the island or yoga but I'm not sure.. Thanks <3

how to become flexible when you are massive.

    Posted: 21 Dec 2020 11:22 AM PST

I am 16 years old, 6'4 and 290lbs. I'm slimming down and doing cardio but I'd also like to be more flexible for next football season. I have the flexibility of a 1 inch rebar. I wasn't able to properly squat max because I can't bend all the way. what are some stretches I can do?
