Posted: 11 Dec 2020 03:57 PM PST What do you guys think? I recently started doing both. Started smoking at night only for insomnia. Started doing yoga for many reasons but point is both are very new to me. Normally I would do my yoga then smoke and go to bed. Buuuuut I've experimented recently smoking a little bit then doing yoga and my god. It's fucking amazing, I feel like I get much more out of it and I'm able to push myself more. My breathing is better and more natural and everything else just flows too. I think the sweet spot is just not smoking a lot of it. [link] [comments]
5 Minute Time Lapse of Folded Butterfly Posted: 11 Dec 2020 02:36 PM PST https://imgur.com/gallery/qOLLhyQ I was so impressed with the Yin Dragon variation I saw posted here earlier that I wanted to share some Yin Yoga love. This is a simple five minute hold in butterfly pose folded forward. I am always amazed that I start with my forehead so far from my toes and by the end they are touching. I also found it really interesting how obvious my slow deep breaths are when it's a time lapse! I know that there's a lot of love for flashy practices with handstands and pincha, plus deep back bends (and I love them too!) but I just wanted to share a simple practice with really beautiful results. Any Yin/Bernie Clark/Paul Grilley fans in the house? [link] [comments]

Does yoga really ‘lower’ metabolism? Posted: 11 Dec 2020 04:41 PM PST Hi! Recently a new yogi! I've been consistent in doing 3 vinyasa classes a week and 1 half vinyasa/yin class for about a month now. I am trying to lose weight (I have around 30-40 pounds to lose). I have actually gained 2.5 pounds since starting yoga. I know some of my classes are intense because I'm sore for a few days after them. I have been meticulously tracking my food in MFP. So I don't think I'm over eating. I read somewhere that yoga actually lowers your metabolism? Is there any truth to this? Trying to find some kind of reason for the weight gain. [link] [comments]
Posted: 11 Dec 2020 10:34 AM PST Hello everyone! I have been doing yoga for about five months but I am very very inflexible. I can barely do downward facing dog (I need to bend my legs and can't put my heels down) and I'm really struggling with three legged dog. If, say, I put my right leg up then I end up shifting all my weight to my right hand and my left hand lifts slightly off the ground. At the same time, my left leg which is bent starts to hurt and I end up in this weird twisted position. Do you guys have any tips? Should I wait until I can get my legs straight in downward dog before I attempt three legged dog? [link] [comments]
Question, how do you know what your doing? Posted: 11 Dec 2020 06:29 AM PST Are there secrets to yoga flows? Whenever I see people post there 30-40 min flows I always think, "how do they have that lengthy sequence memorized?" And "they must have had some secret training" Am I over thinking it? How do you know what to do? [link] [comments]
Yoga practice and ADHD medication? Anyone here? Posted: 11 Dec 2020 06:00 AM PST So I recently re-started adderal xr 10mg to manage my adhd. I am worried about it impeding with my authentic progress with yoga. I was diagnosed ADHD, gen anxiety and OCD, in 2012 and started ADHDmeds for a few months. At the time my anxiety and OCD were more detrimental to my well being, and the ADHD meds made it worse. So I decided even with unmedicated ADHD I had nothing to lose, wanted to deal with my anxiety and OCD first then reasses ADHD once I felt mentally stronger. Fast forward to now. Half a decade of Lexapro, half a decade of therapy, almost 7 years of yoga practice, and a 200 hr TT later, I am ready to address my ADHD and feel I have to tools to cope with my other issues. I feel the tools I learned to manage my anxiety OCD also translated over to ADHD in many areas . However, there are just some aspects of ADHD that really get in the way of my life. Whether it's because I am not ready to face it on my own or not, I will figure out eventually. But right now, I need help. So, back to full circle. I am on adderall, and for some reason I have this irrational thought that it will change my yoga practice in a way that doesn't feel authentic. And I know logically it is- this is my practice, my experience, my process; trust the process. However, I'm worried I won't be able to find the same headspace. When I wasn't medicated for ADHD, I could feel the change in my nervous system in real time through my breathing exercises and practice. I learned how to control my anxiety and taxing thoughts through this process. The mat became a sanctuary for me. Not that I will "lose" this, but i guess I'm just feeling lost. Like it won't be the same. Maybe this is a good challenge I am facing, what I needed to take my practice to the next level. I know the medication will help motivate me to find flexibility where I have felt stuck for years, find poses I have been intimidated by, etc. I just hope it feels authentic. Anyways, first day of amphetamine jitters, now I'm rambling. Anyone else here take adderall while also maintaining a practice that they feel truly in tune with? Can anyone relate? Thanks [link] [comments]
Posted: 11 Dec 2020 03:40 PM PST Have done yoga off and on for the past few decades (maybe once a month or so) so this is the first time I've done it consistently. Have really enjoyed seeing progress through the course but haven't found anyone else who's done it... would love to learn what awaits :) [link] [comments]

Are other kinds of exercise necessary for staying healthy? Posted: 11 Dec 2020 06:10 AM PST Hello everyone, Just as with most sports/forms of exercise, I'm kind of seeing that yoga lacks pulling movements. I like to keep things simple, so I like to do yoga+walking for exercise. My question is: is it necessary or reccomendable to do pulling movements (dumbbel row for instance), or is there no harm in only doing yoga as our main exercise in the sense of developing muscle imbalances and so on. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Unable to bend even slightly after yesterday's yoga session Posted: 11 Dec 2020 04:25 AM PST I woke up today feeling fine and just decided to do an easy morning stretch to discover really bad lower back pain and inability to bend at all. My yoga session wasn't so intense yesterday at all, ashtanga just around 15 minutes, but I clearly did something wrong. Any help would be really appreciated guys, maybe any potential remedies? Thank you! [link] [comments]
Best yoga position to help me easily sit cross legged? Posted: 11 Dec 2020 12:14 AM PST Hi all. I don't normally practice hatha yoga but I am aware that it may help me with my meditation efforts. I need to be able to easily and comfortably sit in a cross legged position with my palms facing upwards. This is the indian meditation method that I have been following for a good while now. However, my efforts have been somewhat impeded by the fact that I'm not good at sitting cross legged. My legs just don't want to lay in the proper position. I guess the problem would lie in the hips somewhere, right? I figured there must be a Yoga pose that can train me to easily sit cross legged. If someone could name it specifically, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Posted: 11 Dec 2020 07:38 AM PST I'm 29 year old male, Asian. I have never done anything similar to Yoga before. I have been training Karate Monday to Friday for the last 2 month, which it did help my flexibility abit. I have bought 24 lessions of private Yoga lession. So here is my question: I'm starting my private Yoga lession starting next week Monday. My Yoga teacher promised me that I can get my front split in 2 week if I train with her 4 times a week in a row. Is this possible? She even told me that if I train with her another 2 week, I can get my middle split. SoI then ask her on top of the private lession I have already paid, how many lession do I need to buy to get the middle split, she told me 8. [link] [comments]

Are the benefits of yoga and meditation cumulative Posted: 11 Dec 2020 12:47 AM PST Hi everyone, About two weeks ago i started implementing yoga in my routine (~20 min when i wake up) - and i love it. I also started meditating on the morning and the evening which I find great to control my thoughts. I know both practices have known spiritual benefits but I am wondering whether these benefits are cumulative or not. (I am only talking about non-physical benefits as i am already physically active outside of these practices). My intuition tells me there is some form of overlap in the breathing and mindfulness techniques, but that the positions you use in yoga do help to develop areas like confidence (ie warrior) and humility (ie child) outside of meditation. (I'm thinking about the theory in Amy Cuddy's ted talk here). What do guys think? have a good day! Paul [link] [comments]
I dont want to hurt my child. Please advise. Posted: 11 Dec 2020 05:30 AM PST Im about 3 years into my yoga practice and about 2 years into what im guessing is a kundalini awakening. (I posted this message in their chat as well). At night I try to do breath work and coordinate breaths with my wife as she sleeps. Sometimes we get into a major groove and i feel as if im in the middle of trip. Sometimes I slow everything down for a second and experience the white backdrop and possibly see into the quantum. Not sure just using this to frame. Last week we found out she was pregnant (about 7 weeks) so I haven't really synced our breaths bc I fear that if Kundalini is somehow mixed into this equation i could possibly have an unprovoked shakti transfer to her and possibly hurt or even kill the baby. Can someone please advise? [link] [comments]
