Is building strength with yoga too difficult?

    Posted: 28 Dec 2020 01:53 PM PST

    I'm really confused.

To give background, I did weightlifting for about a year and a half before COVID hit. Despite gyms reopening in my area, I haven't felt comfortable enough to return, especially given that my state has been a disaster of a hotspot for ages now. I always found it difficult to stick to any long-term physical exercise if I was forced to do it at home, but I decided to finally try yoga consistently about two months ago. It's helped two-fold, one in the stress relief and second on maintaining a routine. I've gained weight since lockdown and I'm sure I've also lost muscle, so I was hoping my yoga practice could be a good way to retain or even build strength levels. Some poses are significantly difficult for me to achieve and others leave me feeling happily fatigued and like I've worked the muscles on my body. But a search through the subreddit has led me to read opinions that yoga isn't really good as a physical practice, not good for weight loss (which yes, weight loss comes from diet. But strength exercise is definitely suppose to help), and definitely not good for building strength.

Am I missing something? Is everyone who practices yoga and is physically strong supplementing their yoga practice with weight lifting or other strength building exercises in order to build muscle or tone up? I know we all have different goals, but did anyone else (mostly) start yoga with the goal to get fit/strong?

I guess I'm just wondering what people's routines look like and if they've noticed a change in their strength levels on yoga alone.

    Any tips for improving backbends?

    Posted: 28 Dec 2020 09:09 AM PST

I have been doing yoga for a few years but the only thing I don't really do is backbends of any kind - I even avoid camel pose. My back is not flexible and I feel maybe my core isn't strong enough to hold myself without hurting? Any back bend hurts me or feels uncomfortable so I guess I avoid it but this year I want to improve them! Any tips where/ how to start incorporating it into my daily self-practice?

    Yoga Wheel Beginner

    Posted: 28 Dec 2020 08:44 PM PST

Hi y'all! I've been doing basic beginner yoga for most of the quarantine. For Christmas I was gifted a yoga wheel and I am excited to use it. I've searched Google and Pinterest, but haven't found much. Are there any yoga wheel challenges or good beginners videos y'all recommend?

How to be consistent with doing certain poses

    Posted: 28 Dec 2020 11:42 AM PST

Hi! I just want to ask how some of you guys get consistent with like splits because in my situation, there are days where I can do the splits with a squared hips and there are days where I'm so tight I can't even do it at all and it's kinda frustrating. Same goes with my backbending (like camel pose, wheel pose etc.) and arm balancing.

I know that there are really days where it happens but in my situation it's like I can only do them like 2 times a week so ugh

If you can give me any tips or something, it'll be so great!!

    Looking yoga/meditation training/retreat recommendations

    Posted: 28 Dec 2020 12:21 PM PST

So I've been practicing yoga on and off for a few years now and I'm really wanting to deepen my practice. I've found that a combo of yoga and meditation has done wonders for my mental health, accepting the demons of my past, and becoming in tune with my body and mind. I'm thinking about quitting my job when it's safe to travel again and taking a few months to really focus on yoga/meditation. I know that there are different yoga retreat and training programs all over the world. Does any one have a retreat/training that they did and really benefitted from? Any experiences or advice is very appreciated :)

    Middle split impingement?

    Posted: 28 Dec 2020 05:32 PM PST

So I've never could spread my legs apart in middle/straddle splits, my other friends seem to have no problem doing that. I've started doing training middle splits from a standing position.

At first, I really have trouble spreading my legs like there is some tension coming from the upper/side glute or hip joint (not really sure what it is). What I do then Is staying in this position and after a while, I am able to slide deeper without any issues nor pain until I feel this discomfort again, which disappears after I do the same thing. It looks like I am somewhat warming up in the process which lets me get deeper and deeper. I actually can get in a somewhat impressive split for my level however this whole process seems a little bit suspicious and I've wondered if that's normal.

Sean Vigue - Classic, hilarious, good workouts, goofy guy with a huge vault.

Travis Eliot - Super produced, but he's good. Balance of effort and flow

Breath and Flo - Guy and girl partner, but I tend to do Flo (the guy) more. Just a preference. Solid channel.

NOW HELP ME OUT 🙏🙏 Who is missing from this list?

Yins are great, but easier to find. Suggestions preferred for the intermediate/advanced realm.

How to start practicing inversions safely?

    Posted: 28 Dec 2020 03:47 PM PST

    Hey guys!

I started my yoga practice around March, last year. This year I feel off track and have been on and off for about 6 months or so (dealing with corona, depression, etc).

I used to practice at a studio, but since Dec/2019 I have been practicing at home using Alo Moves.

I would love to start doing handstands, or whatever other arm inversions, but I'm afraid to get hurt. At the studio, we had the instructor always around and ready to help. At home, I'm super afraid of falling and getting seriously injured (like breaking my neck or something lol).

Any tips on how to do it more safely alone at home?

    Yoga studio energy exchange program

    Posted: 28 Dec 2020 02:54 PM PST

I just wanted to get everyone's thoughts on this. In my area, a yoga membership costs around $99 to $140 per month. Many studios offer an energy exchange or good karma program whereby you work 3-5 hour shifts once a week, in exchange for a free membership. This effectively means that energy exchange members earn less than minimum wage. I consider this to be somewhat unethical but leaving that aside, would this have any legal repercussions for for-profit businesses? I'm thinking of US/Canada based businesses in this case.

    Straight legs or straight back?

    Posted: 28 Dec 2020 10:16 AM PST

    Which should I focus on?

After a pretty sedentary 2020, I did my first "class" on Down Dog this morning. I'm about as flexible as a 2x4, coming a few inches shy of even touching my toes when standing straight up.

The down dog, rag doll, and forward fold/half lift poses are not the prettiest. On down dog, I'm pretty much on my toes and my legs still aren't straight, and my back is curved. On rag doll and forward fold, I'm pretty much bent at a 90° angle at my waist if I want my legs to be straight. And at that point, half lift is obsolete because I'm already practically standing up at that point.

So, should I be aiming to get straight legs on these poses, and then focusing on my back? Or should I focus on a straight back, and then straight legs? I definitely can't have both at this point.

    Shoulder pain during child's pose?

    Posted: 28 Dec 2020 12:39 PM PST

Every time I do child's pose I have pain in my left shoulder, but that's the only pose I have issues with it. Any idea what I might be doing wrong, or anything I can do to work out the issue?

Is the headstand bench safe for cervical kyphosis and lordosis?

    Posted: 28 Dec 2020 12:03 PM PST

I'm still fairly new to yoga but been practicing for a few months. Cannot do very complex poses (yet!) like handstands, headstands, crow, etc. Am thinking about buying a headstand bench to start practicing inversions and building core strength. Does anyone know if the bench is safe if you have cervical kyphosis and lordosis? I have read that it actually relieves neck tension but would love to hear your experiences.

Keeping up with yoga now that lockdown is over

    Posted: 28 Dec 2020 02:07 AM PST

r/yoga, you guys are all inspiring me today with your awesome pose pics so thanks for the boost. I've been doing lots of yoga this year during my city's various lockdowns and I feel like it's been great for my physical and mental health. Now that life is going (sort of) back to normal and I'm back at work, I'm finding it hard to find the time/motivation to keep up with daily practice. Anyone else experience this? Any tips on how to make room for yoga in our busy lives?

How important is it to be connected to the breath as you do yoga?

    Posted: 28 Dec 2020 12:35 AM PST

This might sound like a dumb question but I just want the science in terms of what it's doing. Is it the same thing as meditation but it's for your body? I was doing my second session of yoga and once again it was great but my breath was all over the place in terms of inhaling and exhaling. I'm just curious what the impact is if I'm not breathing right and what is the benefits when I am. If it's releasing energy inside of my body or is it easier to let the blood flow and to center yourself with your body when your connected with your breath. Thanks!
