    100 days of Yoga

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 02:26 AM PST

As the year goes, one of the best things I can reflect on is my 100 days of Yoga. (It isn't a challenge or anything)

I picked yoga up in mid July, when I was worried about my weight gain, and I couldn't keep up with cardio. I know, 100 days from then till now isn't impressive, but it's a milestone.

In the meanwhile I completed another college semester, did an internship, got a job offer and did loads of academic work too.

There have been days when I had to give attention to my work and to do that I decided to skip my practice for the day. Very recently I took a three week hiatus to keep up with my exams, and yes I've also taken a lot of days off for resting myself when menstrual cramps hit.

But it's been a journey. I've observed myself love it more and more each day, and take better care of my body with each passing day. Above all, I've observed how patience does so much and the longest journeys are to be taken with small steps.

    I'm so thankful.

    Namaste 🙏

For those who have traveled far in their yoga journey, thoughts on marraige??(marraige to someone who will seek yoga or spirituslity) is marraige or partnership too much material world? Im sure there's a balance?

I need an opinion from all in the yoga community. It's a challenging question that may be being overlooked by third parties. However , I am intrigued to know how this community's response to my question regarding yoga flow will be. All opinions are gladly welcomed.

Basically, I was in a yoga class doing yoga and since I am a bit slow as a beginner I lagged behind. Some would say it was or could be interpreted as my own flow. This is very disrespectful to the teacher which is why whenever a class is too difficult I just sit there. He or she even says if it is too hard just wait for easier poses. Now the confusing part is I feel third parties are interpreting this as transgender type thing. Excuse my language , but that is just fucking mental. Supposing I was doing my own flow, how in the flying fuck is that a sign I want to be a transgender ? Some people overlook stuff. Supposing I entertain this; I'll just seek therapy first. I been practicing for some time now and been improving so I can distinguish left and right. I also had a lot of brain injuries as well so there's that.

Best 15-20min daily practices/stretches to still progress as a new beginner and not stay stagnant

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 03:47 PM PST

    Hello all!

Looking for some recommendations regarding certain movements/practices/stretches that I can do everyday to progress in my yoga journey. The caveat is that I work 11-12 hour shifts 4-5 days a week that physically exhaust me and therefore I cannot dedicate a huge chunk of my day to yoga. I know yoga is a patient and long practice, especially if you want to see results; I don't want to just maintain but also grow in my journey. I plan to do longer practices on my days off, but who/what can I follow to maintain a daily practice that's still beneficial in my growth?

    Thank you advance!

    Question for teachers on teaching!

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 05:57 PM PST

I am a new teacher this year. I have started my small business (including a website, social media, etc) and I have yet to get any private clients. I am sure building up comes with time, but I'm curious if anyone else has tips, tricks, ideas. With COVID and class reduction sizes, studio teaching where I am seems hard to come by. Any advice is welcome. Thank you 🙏

    Are tattoos allowed in ashrams?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 05:21 PM PST

I'm planning to do my ytt in Rishikesh next year and most of the ashrams seem to need modest dress. I have tattoos in obvious places that can't be completely covered, will this be a problem?

I’m a yoga beginner doing Vinyassa. There’s so many beginner videos with so many different poses. Should I just pick one video and stick with it for a few weeks or months?

Which type of yoga do I do and do I do it correctly?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 10:01 AM PST

This is what I did before:

I had used an app called Daily Yoga (btw, if you're a beginner, I recommend it) and I had a few movements memorized. This is the order:

    1. 4-5 Sun salutations (for the moment).
    2. Warrior position

    3. When I'm finishing warrior position (on both sides, I do pyramids position [on both sides]).

    4. After step 3, I'm lately doing cat and cow. Then, I do some flexing (try to reach my feet sitting on the floor).

    5. Later, I do bridge.

    6. Finally, I do tree pose.

I meditate for 30s-1 minute (that's what I think) while at the same time I am standing and my eyes are open. I sometimes do child pose.

This is my updated yoga routine:

    1. 8 Sun salutations (for the moment).

    2. Warrior position. I start with Warrior 1. Then do warrior 2. When I'm finishing warrior 2, I do angle (found out it wasn't pyramids). Then I do triangle. After this, I stand up and eventually pass to try Warrior 3. I repeat step 2 on the other leg.

    3. Once I finish step 2, I do pin pose. Then I pass to plank.

    4. I pass to half-cobra, then do cobra.

    5. I do child, then pass to table to do cow and cat.

    6. After doing normal cow and cat, I pass to balancing table and do cow and cat at the same time (my knee being forward to cat). I do this on both arms and legs.

    7. I do child pose to rest a bit. Then do downward dog (I move my legs back and forth, helps my flexibility on the pose and the balance). Later, I go back to pin pose, stand up and end the exercise (not the yoga).

    8. I rest a bit, then move to dancer's pose (both legs). Later, I pass to tree pose (both legs).

    9. I sit on the mat/floor. I flex both of my legs, then move to reverse tabletop pose. Later, I do bridge pose a couple of times.

    10. I rest on the mat/floor. I flex both of my legs up. Then, I pass and end the yoga with corpse pose.

My main goals of doing this yoga routine (I created it) are (from 3rd to 1st):

    1. To grow muscle mass and staying fit (I'm skinny).

    2. To improve my balance.

    3. To improve my flexibility.

    To whoever reads this, Namaste.

In three sentences, what are the core principles of yoga (for you personally)?

I know I can look up any online resource, but I would like to hear it from practitioners.

If modern yoga asana derived from Danish gymnastics in the 1880s, why do the poses have sanskrit names?

    Posted: 28 Dec 2020 09:55 PM PST

Just to be clear, I don't have a problem with modern day yoga at all. I believe people can practice it as traditionally or non-traditionally as they want since yoga has positive effects for everyone. I'm simply curious in how the names came to be.

As far as I know, asanas like headstands and warrior pose were not part of the original yogic traditions (or were they?) so someone would have had to give them newly created sanskrit names and I'd like to get an insight into the who, how's and why's.

    Teacher certification question!

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 07:32 AM PST

Hi guys! I got my 200 he certification back in 2014. I taught for a bit and then moved to NYC to work and although my practice continued- my teaching took a back seat.

It's 2020 and I'm trying to figure out if my certification is still valid for teaching or do I need to complete another 200hr course to teach again?

Any information or help is greatly appreciated.
