Lower back pain when doing butterfly stretch

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 04:52 PM PST

I apologize if this has been asked before..I looked for this specific question/answer and didn't find it

I've been doing the Tykato beginners start to stretching video. Each time I do it, my lower back hurts when I do the butterfly stretch..where I'm sitting and my feet touch and I'm supposed to stretch knees to the floor and bend forward.

I'm not rounding my back. I'm not leaning too far. My lower back hurts even if I DON'T lean forward in this stretch. Why?

My lower back does not hurt doing any of the other stretches. Any advice?

What do do about the routine.

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 06:46 PM PST

I'm on the fence about starting a new stretching routine vs adjusting an old routine.

I'm not sure what to do because I've been stretching regularly (5~6 days a week 30+mins ) with professional and self made routines for about 2y now and get VERY little (maybe 0?) in terms of flexibility.

So the last professional routine I did was aligned with my goals for very high vertical high kicks, splits. ( did this for about 3 months with no returns) But it was 75% static stretching (which based on my experience doesn't work for me?)

My goals are still the same (very high kicks / splits) but I'm not sure where to go. New routine? any ideas? Seems my problem is that I'm not the same as most for gaining flexibility and my body really doesn't gain flexibility without assistance or weight.

Anybody know anyone who's been through this? any ideas? Thanks!

Quite tired after the warmups & stretches especially at glutes when straddle. In times, I’d surely can straddle fully with enough strength.

Butterfly stretch as my regular sitting position

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 11:45 AM PST

I have never noticed anything weird about this before but I choose to sit in the 'butterfly stretch' naturally with my knees pressed to the floor. I'm not very flexible at all but it's not that I do this because I can't cross my legs.. I can, it's just not as comfortable as the butterfly stretch. I never even thought it was weird neither did I know it was supposed to be a stretch. I find it very useful as I can hold things with my feet to keep them steady hands free lol so I doubt I'd want to stop it any time soon. However my friends say it's not normal and that I 'sit like a baby' which I understand but it's just comfortable! Anyone else sit like this?? Btw I'm a 20 year old female 5ft1. Could me being short be the reason for this?

    Ankle Mobility

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 06:40 PM PST

During my stretch and mobility workouts, I do ankle circles. It's almost like my ankles will lock up in certain spots instead of being one continuous motion. Is there any specific stretches or exercises that I can do to strengthen my ankles and work on their mobility?

Jolt down entire leg during a hamstring stretch?!

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 10:14 AM PST

    Hello!

I felt a really weird jolt down my entire left leg while doing a hamstring stretch. It didn't hurt as such, it was just bizarre. Any combination of "leg" and "jolt" on google brings me to sciatica, which I don't think it is as this is the first time I've felt it, and it was only during that one specific stretch - I carried on just fine afterwards. I do sometimes feel a bit of a popping/clicking sensation in my hamstring, but it's never painful, and always while stretching. I've been trying to stop going into the stretches as much to see if that was the problem, but I really wasn't pushing myself when this jolt happened. Has anyone experienced anything similar? I can imagine it's still nerve related so should I try nerve flossing anyway?

    Hamstring

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 05:42 PM PST

Hey! I wasnt sure where to post this but I could use advice on how to stretch or rather loosen the hamstring injury I had 2 years ago. I felt a pop and since then I havent done much. The pain is still there but not so unbearable but it can be at times. Im currently using a tai chi ball it kind of looks like the coronavirus. I am using it right under my thigh. But i was wondering if its too late? Can I actually reconstruct the tissue even more than 2 years old? If anyone has any recommendations or tips that can help me with this that would be great!

groin strain injury/hamstring injury recovery and tips

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 09:01 AM PST

Hi guys-- sorry for probably a long winded post. I'm a former ballerina, modern dancer and now I do/teach pole and flexibility.

I injured my hamstring in March last year doing a spatchcock. My first ever hamstring injury, For those who don't pole a spatchcock in a over-straddle on the pole. Its a move I've done many times before but this time I injured it. The injury effected my back hamstring right near the top of the leg and made it hard to do front splits on that side. I probably did too much as I continued to dance but relaxed from doing too many splits.

The hamstring injury seemed to be better by end of Aug, however in August I then subsequently injured myself (Same leg) in a middle split (these had not been bothering me up until this point). I'm sure its connected to the weakeness on that leg but.... anyways now the injury seems to be just groin. I was limping and the pain was bad for about a week. After that I could walk but every time I went to stretch a straddle or frog it slightly hurt. I wait about a month or 2 and the reinjured it in October from a move on the pole that had nothing to do with a middle split ;_;. Then again it December it reinjured from simply walking too far ;_;.

Now I've gone to see a physical therapist finally (The Rona had me scared). Its early Jan. When the hell will this thing heal and what are tips on recovery? Is it messed up forever for straddles and middle splits. It can be feeling totally fine for regular activity but if I got to stretch it....it will feel off the next day.

    Tips/Success stories?

What can I stand on for Jefferson curls and the like?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 03:47 AM PST

I work out in my (smallish) flat and want to start following Tom Merrick's beginner hamstring routine. However, I'm not really sure what would be suitable to stand on for the Jefferson curl and elevated calf PNFs – my chairs are either not very sturdy or have cushions so I'd prefer not to use them, and otherwise I can't think of much else.

Anyone got suggestions for what to use? I'm willing to buy something if I really need to but wary of cluttering up the place with equipment I don't use that often (or of spending too much money...).
