How much can I possibly stretch without overdoing it?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 11:01 PM PST

    Hi,

After experiencing knee pain while running I finally had the realization that not stretching my whole life was really bad and I need to start. It's really bad like probably worse than any of you has ever been. Like I am extremely far from touching my toes with straight legs. After a few days I can get halfway down my shin when bent over. With my back straight (and legs straight) I can barely lean forward at all.

It's really bad and I feel awful about it so want to do my best to rectify this as soon as I possibly can, no matter the effort.

I am doing 20-30 min of Yoga every day now using the down dog app and stretching twice a day using this routine https://antranik.org/toe-touching-routine/ (I got from this subreddit), and seated and standing "toe touch attempts". So I am holding all my stretches for about 30-60s so I am spending 2*30 min a day stretching.

Today it felt like I could almost get less far than 2 days ago and the muscles feel kind of sensitive.

Am I overdoing it? If yes how long should i take a break and how often can I possibly stretch to maximize success? I'm not looking for the recommended amount of stretching for "normal" people, (which I saw from researching is 2-3 times a week) but for the maximum I can possibly do to become "normal" as soon as possible if that makes sense.

I would really appreciate your advice. Thank you!

    Seeking advice on the splits

    Hi everyone,

Several months ago, I set a goal of doing the splits. I am currently about a foot off of the ground for both side splits and front splits. I'm a bit frustrated though as my progress has significantly slowed down. I would appreciate advice on what I can do to finally achieve the full splits.

In terms of my routine... I stretch about 4 days a week, 1 hour per session. I usually go through several of the positions in the attached image (spending 30sec-1min per pose).

Lately I've been really sore and am wondering if perhaps I'm overworking my muscles? Anyway, if you have any suggestions please let me know!

I am new to yoga and flexibility training. I am an avid runner: I've been running nearly everyday for 9 years, and lately average 25-35 miles a week. I've always stretched after I run, so I can do the basics like touching my toes; but I really want to expand my flexibility! Running this much can also make my muscles tight, restricting flexibility. Any tips for those just starting out? Or for those with tight muscles due to sports? I currently am doing one 20-30 minute yoga with Adrienne practice a day, but would be willing to supplement it, with the help of you pros. PS the pics/videos I see on here are so impressive and inspiring.
