The realities of yoga instruction as a job. Is it worth it? Posted: 04 May 2020 10:59 AM PDT I read a lot of posts on here from people doing their yoga teacher training or wondering about the feasibility of opening their own yoga studio. Earlier this year, I decided to transition from my well-paid corporate job to teaching yoga full-time for a local fitness/yoga company that has several studios in my area, and I just wanted to share some of my experience for anyone curious about what it's like starting from the bottom. I finished my 200-hour training about a year before I started working at the studio. Everyone who works at my studio starts out doing Ops (front desk duty. It's a lot of checking people in and folding towels. That's one reality of doing yoga as a career- towel management. I could go on for days, but if you run your own studio, cleaning and folding towels will become a permanent structure in your life) and then we start teaching Hot Yoga first, because it's the easiest to teach (all static postures in the same sequence every class with the same hold times). You make $10/hr doing Ops and start at $12/hr teaching Hot yoga. You get hourly raises for each additional class certification, up to $22/hr. $22/hr ain't great, but it's ~workable in my area with help from my SO. IF I'm working full-time. But when you first start teaching, you're not going to be working full-time. Yoga studios have weird hours, and you're competing with other, more experienced teachers with more class certs, thus higher scheduling priority. So definitely be prepared to take a loss. If you're $1200 in the hole from your 200hr teacher training, expect it to take a while to climb out. If you're at the top of your game as a teacher, teaching ~15 classes per week (this is a pretty heavy load if you're teaching hot yoga or power flow. It's tough on the body.), you're making just enough to barely scrape by. If you get sick, you're not getting paid time off, and you probably don't have benefits. Anyway, I decided to accept these realities and make a big old change from a job I hated to one I loved, knowing that I'd have to adjust my lifestyle to make it work. Then COVID-19 hit and my studio will be closed until at least the 18th. When we open, we're opening at half capacity with no-contact policies in place. The entire world is changing, and I don't know what's going to happen now. I have good and changed my mind about making a career in yoga instruction work. It's so risky. Now we're teaching virtual classes and waiting with baited breath for the next announcement from our governor. Anyway, I'd love to hear about your experiences starting your career in yoga. Have any of you found a way to make it work teaching? How? Do you think it makes a difference whether you're teaching for a corporate studio, doing independent contracting, or managing? [COMP] Coordination challenge with a yoga block, level 1! Can you do it? Posted: 04 May 2020 08:08 AM PDT |
Posted: 04 May 2020 06:04 PM PDT Hi all, I just discovered this forum and thought I'd ask look for some advice! I practiced yoga daily for about 5 years until an accident that had me on crutches for 6 months and then slowly getting back to walking... I'm about ready to start practice again but... Let's just say that I am so much tighter than I used to be and going to my regular practice is a no-go right now! Looking for some advice on a yin practice before building back up to regular vinyasa! Posted: 04 May 2020 03:50 PM PDT The title may be a bit misleading. I (50M) started doing yoga almost 6 years ago. Mostly because of a chronic shoulder injury. I can no longer lift weights or do many of the exercises that require anything more than bodyweight. Yoga seemed the perfect solution, and it is! After starting as a beginner and becoming more proficient over the over the months, I noticed a phenomenon occurring. I would feel like I was going to cry at the end of every class. We would finish shavasana, sit up and do the part where you say namaste and do a seated bow. I put my hands together and touch my thumb knuckles to my forehead (like the instructors do) and wham, I'd be welling up and evening shaking a bit. So I manage this. It's a tad awkward for a man of my age and gender to cry every time he does yoga. So I clamp down on the process a bit and just have a "moment". Sometimes I stay in the bow longer and let it pass. Well, I got away from yoga for a year. Long story. But I'm back doing it now, only it's in my living room on a yoga website not in a full classroom. But the ending comes and wham, more powerful than before. I just let it come. Basically bawling for about 20 seconds. Goes away as fast as it comes. I've been doing this for two weeks and it's the same every time. I am not a yoga theory devotee. I need the exercise and find some of the principles to be good for you. So I'm asking those of you who are more informed about this, what the hell is this? Can you help me understand? [link] [comments] |
What are your experiences with yoga online courses (particularly in groups)? Posted: 04 May 2020 11:19 AM PDT Hey there, Since I am spending a lot of time at home on my computer due to the pandemic I am looking into yoga. I want to feel balanced again and keep my body healthy. Do you have any experiences with yoga online courses? I'd be particularly interested in some course that offers synchronous group sessions. Feeling a bit lonely at home some times tbh and feel it'd be a good opportunity for some human interaction. Do you have any experiences with that? Is there any community beyond the time of the group session? So curious! Stay safe All! [link] [comments] |
Finishing up “30 days of yoga” with Adriene. Where to go next? Posted: 04 May 2020 07:00 AM PDT I was thinking about just starting it over again. Do you guys have recommendations for another YouTube series or 30 day challenge? Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 04 May 2020 04:28 PM PDT I have a question, I'm not very flexible at all. I'm very athletic but the tightness is starting to slow me down and cause pain in my hips. The only issue is Every time I do yoga , I do not feel like I'm getting anymore flexible. I'll feel good right after, but the next day the tightness will just come right back.. I'll only do yoga and stretching for like a week or two straight and If I'm not getting any more flexible I just stop .. could that be the issue ? That I'm not giving it more time for me to get less stiff ? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 04 May 2020 09:36 AM PDT Hello flexible friends! Obligatory 'please remove if not allowed' to the mods, I did try to search your sub for answers but I haven't had any luck so far. Let's get right to it: I am interested in yoga and would like to learn to practice regularly for health benefits, but I am also a nihilist - that is to say, I don't believe in things like chakra energy or souls or connecting to a universal consciousness, etc. (Let me say also that I am a very accepting and open minded person, and I'm not here to refute\discount anyone's beliefs, but I'm a lifelong skeptic and I just can't convince myself that there's more to life than what meets the eye. If you believe these things, I support your right to do so, and even kind of envy you) I have done some yoga, led by friends or following youtube videos online, and I really enjoy the way yoga makes my body feel. I would like to practice it more seriously and more regularly. But... I get really pulled out of the "zone" when the instruction turns more metaphysical. Like when the instructor wants us to focus on a chakra and feel the energy release there, or open\unblock a chakra, or pull energy into the body, etc. I've tried to just tune that out and focus on breathing or leaning into the stretch but there's a little skeptical voice in my head that ruining my experience. I'm wondering if there is yoga for skeptics, a yoga for nihilists? A practice or style or channel I could follow which would provide guidance, maybe the names of poses and reminders to breathe, maybe explaining what muscle groups are being activated or other benefits to the practice, but without all the light and energy and chakra stuff. I guess I'm looking for... Science-yoga? I'm sorry if this is confusing or if the idea of separating the spirituality from the physical practice is in any way disrespectful or offensive. My objective is only to learn and grow, not to upset anyone. Sorry also if this is not an appropriate sub for the question, and thanks in advance to anyone who took the time to read\reply. Have a great day :) [link] [comments] |
Uplifted Yoga Teacher Training/Membership Posted: 04 May 2020 05:31 PM PDT I have been looking into Yoga Teacher Training and ways to deepen my practice. Has anyone done the YTT through Brett Larkin's Uplifted YTT? Does anyone have an uplifted membership? [link] [comments] |
Any options on electic acupunture pens? Posted: 04 May 2020 04:59 PM PDT Bit of a random question, but if you've been getting muscle aches, would those electic acupunture pens be any use? I have been looking at one from ipenofficial.com but not sure if its any good, any advise? [link] [comments] |
Please help me figure out how to get my hips level in balancing stick (tulandandasana). Posted: 04 May 2020 01:01 PM PDT I've practiced yoga for a couple of years now and just found out that when I'm in balancing stick and other similar poses my hips open up. I try to rotate them down and bring the hips level with the ground but it pulls to the point of pain in my calf's and out hip. If anyone has a few stretches they could suggest to help me loosen all of the tight muscles up to attain the pose I would greatly appreciate it. [link] [comments] |
Help with flying pigeon. Can't get back leg to straighten out Posted: 04 May 2020 03:21 PM PDT Basically the title. I can get into what I'm calling a 'broken pigeon,' but trying to straighten my leg results in me falling. I can hold crow for a solid 45 seconds with no trouble and I feel like my core is decently strong, even though I'm pretty fat. I can hold my broken pigeon for awhile too, but I just can't move out of it. Anyone have any tips for getting that back leg out? Body parts to focus on engaging? Other poses to master first? Do I just need to lose weight to make it easier? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 04 May 2020 02:44 PM PDT Many fitness trainers and yoga teachers are offering live Facebook/Instagram or zoom classes - some for free, some paid. Do you find this type of training effective? What is more effective for students and teachers - group classes or privates? Facebook live or zoom that enables 2-way communication? There are advantages to both types. What works best for you and why? [link] [comments] |
