Started Yoga this month. Loving it.

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 05:41 AM PDT

Hello and Namaste to You All. I am new here. Just felt like sharing that I found Yoga With Adriene on YouTube this month. About to finish her Home series. She is wonderful. I feel more calm and at peace, more flexible and I definitely love myself more now. Oh and I had a back injury from a long time ago, which after all this time would make me feel uncomfortable at times, and now it is so much better. I feel really good. ❤️

Whoever is reading this, I hope you have a great day. 😊

    Inflexible body-Inflexible mind.

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 04:30 AM PDT

Hi all, Been doing yoga for about a year now. I'm a 25M and have always been very inflexible and tight in my body. Yoga has massively improved my health in both body and mind. One thing I noticed was that as my body loosened up so did my mind and I've been letting go of old prejudices, ways of thinking and habits. Wanted to know if anyone else felt the same?

    Inability to do certain asana

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 04:11 PM PDT

Are there poses that some people just can't do because of their physiology or bone structure? I can tell that over time by body is releasing in certain areas and more things become accessible little by little- but I also wonder if there will always be things outside by ability because I have shorter arms and longer legs, or because I'm hypermobile in my joints. Any insight or ways to modify inaccessible asanas are welcome!

    Yoga and masculinity

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 01:23 PM PDT

    Hey fellow yogi's

So I've been practicing yoga for two years now and I've only seen benefits in it. It's helped me calm down, it's given me clarity of mind and it's helped me become more aware and respectful of my body especially when I'm pushing too far into a posture.

I'm at a stage where I feel like Yoga has mellowed me out a bit too much...There's an inner drive in me that feels the need to express itself, I can only define it as my masculine energy that's taken a bit of a backseat since I started yoga.

I feel like I need to take on something like Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or weight lifting so I can allow my masculine side to express itself.

An effect of the 2 years of yoga is that I deal with conflict quite well by calming down and defusing the situation however that doesn't help in a corporate environment where you do need to confront and challenge others or you'll be side-lined and seen as weak.

Can any advise me on this? Will allowing my masculine side to express itself help me in corporate confrontation and decision-making?

    Ashtanga felt so good today

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 12:55 AM PDT

Today, for the first time, I did the Ashtanga primary series. Despite that, for now, I am only able to do Surya Namaskar and the standing and sitting asanas up to Paschimottanasana C, it felt totally amazing. I haven't been able to reach the meditative state during yoga for a long time, but today I managed! I stopped wondering about what asana may come next as I usually do during Vinyasa yoga and I just focused on breathing. It felt like I left my physical body, but I was still doing the postures.

I'm looking forward to practising Ashtanga and getting to know more about it. It's truly an amazing way of practising yoga.

Comparing different versions of Surya Namaskars (Sun Salutations)

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 05:08 PM PDT

    Dear yogis,

I have few months of experience of practising yoga in group setting in a studio. Recently, I have been interested in self-teaching and self-practising Surya Namaskar (or Sun Salutations). I did some research online and found four different versions. These fours versions are mentioned below. Can you please explain to me the difference between the four versions. Which of these would be easiest and which one would be difficult for a beginner. Is one of them better than the other?

    Version 1

    1. Pranamasana (Prayer Pose)
    2. Hasta Uttanasana (Raised Arms Pose)
    3. Padahastasana (Hand to Foot Pose)

    3. Uttanasana (Standing Forward Bend)
    4. Anjaneyasana (Low Lunge)

    Humming breath hilarity

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 01:20 PM PDT

Lately I've been super into the humming bee breath (it's really great to calm my nervous sytem) My husband thinks this is hilarious and often interrupts me making jokes about me vibrating the entire house. Today I forewarned him and said "AND DON'T INTERRUPT ME!!!!" so there I am trying to find my groove and I hear the entire house deeply vibrating, and I'm just giggling away, and I demand that he show me what he's using to make this loud crazy noise..........and he walks in with my MAGIC WAND 😂😂😂😂😂😂 spent the next 5 minutes laughing my ass off before I could refocus. So yeah I guess I'm so good at the humming breath it sounds like a sex toy.

    Legwarmer Recs for Outdoor Practice

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 09:48 AM PDT

Hi yogi friends! Here in California we are limited to outdoor studio practices for the foreseeable future. In my area, we are lucky to have pretty good "Indian summer" weather through end of October, but it still gets somewhat chilly in the mornings, and I am on the hunt for a good pair of legwarmers to wear to morning practice.

Any recommendations? I know Alo, Lulu, and Athleta all sell versions.

Cow face legs make me feel nauseous

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 07:39 AM PDT

    Hi guys and gals,

I use the down dog app on an intermediate level. When I do the cow face legs and reach forward with my arms as they ask me to, there is a very strong feeling in my hip flexors to the point where it makes me feel nauseous. I usually back up a little and just sit with my legs crossed not bending over which feels actually pretty nice. I also love firelog pose for example. Has this nausea occurred to anyone of you? Am I doing anything wrong?

    Thank you! here's the pose:

    Tattoo Removal & Hot Yoga

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 11:18 AM PDT

I received my first session of tattoo removal yesterday. I have been advised that hot spaces increase the likelihood that discoloration will occur. I am an avid practitioner of hot yoga, so this is a bit of a problem. Anybody have any advice?

I really want to like yoga, but I feel like I'm just not getting it. Is yoga not for everyone? Or am I doing something wrong?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 09:56 PM PDT

First things first, I've never gone to an actual yoga class. I don't know how expensive they are but when I struggle to buy food I just assume that's a luxury I don't get to have, so if the problem I'm having is because I'm trying to teach myself with videos and online resources, let me know!

I've been hearing about the benefits of yoga for years, but I never gave it a try until I had a doctor recommend it as an exercise I can do at home without having to buy any equipment or get a gym membership. So I really tried to get into it, I did research on what yoga was and everything, found some good apps and YouTube channels, I mostly frequented yoga with Adriene. I think I stuck with it for about a month and gave up, and recently I've been trying to pick it back up again, but I've been running into the same problems I had before, which I will get into now.

The first problem I encounter is that yoga doesn't seem to really do anything for me physically. There is the odd pose here and there where I can feel some stretching, or some muscles working, but for the most part, I feel like I'm not getting any kind of workout or even a stretch from most poses. This leaves me feeling unsatisfied at the end of a yoga session, as I was expecting some kind of physical activity, but I finished feeling just as lazy as before, where after a run or a traditional workout I have that good "I accomplished something and did something good for my body" feeling. Maybe my doctor steered me in the wrong direction and yoga isn't about getting a physical workout, and it's just for your mental health, but when I do research on yoga it seems like it's supposed to be pretty physical so I'm a bit confused.

The other hang up I have is the mental head space yoga is trying to achieve. To me, it just feels like meditation with extra steps. At first, I liked the idea of yoga a lot because it seemed to combine physical exercise with meditation, both of which I have long been trying to get more of, but I've found that the poses I'm doing just distract me from clearing my head and focusing on my breathing.

To add to that, the fact that I'm not really feeling any kind of workout or stretch gets me thinking I'm doing the poses wrong, and I start trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong and before I know it I'm just being self critical which is one of the problems I'm trying to improve with yoga in the first place. I feel like if I'm trying to get into a good meditative headspace, it is nearly impossible for me to achieve with yoga, however if I just sit somewhere comfortable and meditate I can achieve that headspace within a couple short minutes.

Am I doing something terribly wrong? Or is yoga just simply not for my mind and body?

    Where is your mind?

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 07:22 AM PDT

When I practice yoga, I always find my mind travels to the same place.

It's a small city outside my hometown, which I haven't had much connection to, and certainly don't anymore.

But the moment I get on my mat, I get images of the high street, the park, the river, flashing through my mind, every time.

Does anyone else experience this? Where does your mind go? Does anyone know why my mind might be being brought here?

I'm really interested as to whether there is something going on, on a subconscious level.

Looking for ways to correct alignment during poses.

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 06:03 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I've just started yoga - complete beginner and have been to two classes many years ago. During those classes I wasn't aware that you needed to "engage" your muscles.

I've just finished yoga with Adrienne's 30 days challenge which was really fun. I started onto yoga with Tim's 2020 challenge and during day 5 realised that I'm not balancing properly or aligned well. I feel like it's because I mostly tried to "look" like Adrienne during my poses.

Tim tends to explain the poses a bit better with where things should stack but he moves really quickly and I can't keep up.

Is there any yoga that focuses on doing poses correctly in a sequence? I tried Yin Yoga with Kassandra but found she didn't explain the poses in-depth.

I intend to join a class after lockdown but for the meantime would love to nail some basic poses.

    Thanks in advance!!
