How do you plan your daily Yoga practice?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 09:58 AM PDT

I used to go to yoga class before lockdown and I was doing yoga only under a well trained instructor. I avoided doing yoga alone because I didn't want to make any mistakes and wanted to have my basics right. Now I have lot of confidence that I can do it independently and ever since lockdown I am doing it on my own. But I am facing some challenges now on how do I plan my everyday practice. Because obviously I can't do all the poses on everyday and I don't know how I should approach planning each days practice in order to have better results.

So I need to plan set of asanas I can do on each day for an entire week. Is there any strategy/approach to group Asanas for a session (e.g. Shall I select only core engaging asanas one day and thigh engaging asanas a other day? Or I choose asanas such that my whole body is engaged)? And once I know what asanas I am doing, how do I know in which sequence I should do them? Is there any specific strategy for this? I am really trying to scale up my knowledge on these things. Any inputs or references are much appreciated. Thanks!

Sad after my yoga class tonight

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 05:29 PM PDT

I attended a 90 minute hot vinyasa class tonight. My third yoga class since Wednesday. Tonight was probably the only night I left feeling kind of bad about myself.

For context, it's my third workout since March 2020 when things closed. Used to do HIIT. I'm also stiff as a board. I did some light yoga a year and a half ago (unheated) and maybe did YWA 15-20x in the last calendar year.

I know a lot of what I'm going to say doesn't matter. The teacher was good, it was just an intense flow. I took frequent pauses. I probably really tired down the last 10 minutes of the standing portion. But I feel I was behind for a lot of the class. I just didn't understand a lot of the poses and the transitions were quick. So I'd take the first one off, try to observe others then try the next time. For instance, we were on our backs and she mentioned fish pose. I tried to look but couldn't see well from the ground, so I'd skip it all together. There were also some standing portions where I also dealt with this. One was this crescent lunge, and I just didn't know what it meant.

So I took frequent breaks, the teacher did come to me and asked if I was okay and if we should turn the heat down. She also said I was doing well. But I know she was being nice. Yoga teachers don't really come down on you. I know I shouldn't Care, I just feel lousy. Everyone in that class kept up. And I know I can't compare. But it's hard not to when I'm so naturally competitive. I'm out of shape, took a hard class, and I guess I left doubting I'll ever look as good or flow as well as these people. I've got this stomach I hate and badly want to transform my body.

Anyways, I just kind of wanted to rant since I'm feeling sad. And winded. I took my inhaler before and still got wiped. My heart was racing from the pace. Even with breaks. I know it's not the end of the world. I want to be this fit, flexible, toned yogi who can keep up. And I just felt out of place. Also mana gong some knee stress, but the heat helps a good amount. Affects my mobility though.

Is there a "yoga workout builder" site?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 07:19 PM PDT

I think the best yoga workouts/sequences I've tried so far are probably in video format, like those instructional videos posted here. But when it comes to actually using a reference while practicing I prefer the chart/poster format like this one. That's because I have more control of the practice and I don't need to get out of my flow if I feel like staying on a pose longer, doing some meditation in between them and etc.

So, is there a website or something where I can build a workout poster/chart from some kind of postures database? I'm really tired of drawing the poses and breathing instructions by hand hahahah

EDIT: Forgot to include FREE in the title, the only ones I've found are 15 days free trial type of deals.

European Yoga instructors, is teaching yoga enough income to support yourself? How’s the salary?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 02:49 PM PDT

Hey! I've been practicing yoga for a couple years now and I'd consider myself reasonably proficient and well-read, and would like to look into getting certified by an indian yogic lineage. I don't know however if it's going to be a financially reasonable career decision. Any thoughts and tips regarding this topic? Especially instructors living in Germany/Poland.

    Question for plus size/curvy gals

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 04:30 PM PDT

I am starting my first yoga class in over a decade this Saturday. I loved yoga the few times I've tried it, and I'm excited to get back into it with a more mature mindframe. However, I'm plus sized and part of me has that age old fear of being the only big girl in a group full of fit, toned, yogis while I'm a floundering large newbie. Have any plus sized ladies on here ever felt singled out or unwelcome in a yoga class?

I tried doing a diaphragmatic breathing exercise and now I'm breathing with my diaphragm unconsciously throughout my day. How do I get it to stop?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 06:40 PM PDT

I was doing a diaphramatic breathing exercise where the trick is your supposed to exhale first then start the inhale/Exhale rhythm. Well I did this a few times and it's pretty cool and all. I'm a natural mouth breather, so i have to keep my mouth closed, if in a stressful situation my mouth opens occasionally.

Right, so the thing is, everytime I close my mouth and start breathing through my nose, I'm doing the exhale first automatically and I can't get it to stop. I fully believe it is my diaphragm doing it, because I can't hold my breathe. If I inhale, then exhale and try to hold my breathe I'm still inhaling. I've tested this out, and it's like I'm a passenger in my own fucking body.

To get my breathe to pause I have to close my mouth and hold my nose closed. But what happens is I will automatically, start doing Uddiyanabhanda until I unplug my nose. If I take a quick sniff in, I will keep inhaling naturally. It feels like I'm in constant ujjayi breathe.

I have three trains of thought,

    1. This is a blessing I can breath with my diaphragm if I keep my mouth shut. I've heard that only trained Yogi's can breathe this way
    2. This is a problem: I have panic attacks frequently, so if I'm at the end of a really full inhale, and I my sympathetic nervous system fires, my breathe is going to change to hyperventilation, so now I'm full of air I can't expel and it's going to make it ten times worse (This happened a few days ago I was on the fucking floor crying because I burnt my morning toast)

Is this my new normal?. Every time I try to do a breathing exercise I'm still breathing diaphragmatic ally, so I have the illusion of a controlled breathe. I can't do square breathing anymore and it's freaking me out.

What do I do? Should I just go with it?.

I just plugged my nose and opened my mouth and I'm still breathing diaphragmaticly. But I notice that I can breathe in and my diaphragm breathes at the same time. So if I do a conscious inhale, I'm inhaling or exhaling unconsciously at the same time.

What I'm worried is gonna happen is that I'll go through my kday thinking I'm supposed to breathe, and then I will and then I'll overbreathe. This happened earlier today and overbreathing Is one bitch and a half to deal with. I get stuck full of air and then I can't get it out. Or I mean maybe I can now I'm not sure, I just realized what's going on this has been happening for the last 3 days.

What if I’m doing yoga wrong? I just started doing yoga. I’m excited, but I’m afraid of injuries I can get if I‘ll do something wrong. I’m a complete beginner. Can someone really do it wrong? I’m following one 20min. beginner level yoga video…

I started questioning that, because I got a lower back pain and I don't know if it's because of yoga. Please tell me if my fear is stupid!

    Ankle tendon issues from yoga?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 08:49 AM PDT

    Hi all.

So I've gotten back into yoga on a daily basis after being out for about 5 years and I started feeling some soreness in my ankles and feet. I read online that this is due to mobility issues and over time the soreness will decrease.

Turns out this was wrong. I am laid up in the ER because I cannot put any weight on my foot due to a tendon tear (at least that's what we think...waiting on x-ray results as I type this). What do you think happened here? I have a feeling it has something to do with my foot being in flexion consistently.

Any words of wisdom on this? I'm afraid to get back into yoga once it heals because I do not want to injure myself again. This makes me sad.
