How hard physically should a yoga class be? (doing YWA's Breath)

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 04:18 PM PST

So I've dabbled in yoga for quite a while now. Years ago in my early 20s I was fairly focused on just the workout portion and did well in some poses, not in the least of which was because I had a background in lifting and climbing. I've been fairly sedentary for a while now though, and weigh 280lb at 6', and a lot of it is fat. Not only does the extra weight make it hard for me physically (as well as picking up and kicking a nasty cigarette habit during those years), my belly also gets in the way.

So with that bit of background, I have two questions. One, how hard should it be to actually get through the asanas? I find that on slower videos and even ones that have stuck with me (like Sun Salu A), I can breathe with the movements, but now it feels like my breathing is much more difficult to control when doing more rapid flows or holding difficult positions (and what is difficult for me might not be the same as for others; downward facing dog is DEFINITELY not a resting pose for me haha). I will say I've kept a meditation routine for quite some time now so measured breathing is if anything a strength for me, so I know it's not an issue of not knowing HOW to breathe. That brings me to my second point...

Two, could some of these issues be cause by fat getting in the way? I know holding the lunges in this video was almost impossible for more than a few seconds because I felt like I was suffocating.

Thanks ahead of time! (BTW for anyone who doesn't know, the video I was referencing in the title and post is Yoga With Adriene's new 30 day series this year, so if you've done this video maybe you could provide some more context?)

I got very emotional doing yoga today

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 07:37 PM PST

As with many people part of my new year's resolution was to commit myself to exercise more, which led me to yoga. I did yoga once last year with a friend and it was a lot of fun!

So today was my first day committing to it, have the mat, have some clothes, hell yeah. I'm following a YouTube video and halfway through I'm building a bit of a sweat and definitely feeling a burn when the instructor said to go to child's pose (I think from downward dog) and I just started crying. Not because I was in pain or that the exercise was too much, I just felt like this was some of the first self love I've given myself in such a long time?

Like a child being reunited with their mother after not seeing her for a long time I was overcome with emotion. It was like I was giving myself a hug and kiss, being embraced by a love one, it kinda clicked in my head that this isn't just a physical exercise, that it's also mental exercise in love.

I didn't realize how much yoga could reveal to me about myself! I love it!

    Appreciation post

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 10:08 AM PST

I got bought a new yoga mat for Christmas from my boyfriend and it's brought so many feelings of happiness, calm and kindness back to me after a year of chronic pain and other long term health diagnoses. I started off the year practising 4 to 5 times a week at my local yoga studio and it was the best thing that ever happened to me fitness wise and for my mental health.

This year has thrown many curveballs for my health and I have been unable to practice most days after the summer due to the pain I'm in and tiredness that comes with. Towards the end of the year I've barely practised and it's affected my mood so much. I've missed it every day. My old mat was in tatters really and this new mat is just such a refreshing start to the year, we don't have loads of money and he said to me he misses me doing my thing and wants me to spend time with myself again to make me feel good. Ive spent the last week in such good spirits from being on my mat again. Thank you so so much.

I'm so so grateful. Wishing you all a year of good health and calmness.

    X

Trouble "Pressing into palms" - Mostly just pressure in wrists

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 04:00 PM PST

I'm a beginner, sticking to youtube yoga atm. I've taken some classes in person pre-covid, and always found this problem:

For downward dog, instructors talk about "pressing into your palms", which I think is the same as the "four corners of your feet" thing -- even pressure across the whole hand (please lmk if I'm misinterpreting). I can't seem to get the strain out of my wrists. It always seems like I've got all my weight on the heels of my hands. I normally try and spread my fingers wide, and I've tried shifting my feet around to change how sharp the 'V' my body makes is. I feel the same pressure in my wrists when I hold a regular plank, if that helps clarify anything.

Any advice on getting the strain out of your wrists?

    Old and male

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 02:43 AM PST

Any other older guys out there? I'm nearly 66. Been doing yoga for 3 years. I'm usually the only guy in class. Sometimes it feels awkward, but yoga is important to me so I go to my 2/week classes (Except for now. Classes are on hold for Covid.)

I'm not into small talk and I have a bit of hearing loss so I don't often participate in the chatter before and after class. Sometimes the awkwardness makes it tough to go. Anyone else in this situation? Seems like here in corn-country yoga is a womans' thing.

    Overweight and handstands

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 07:08 PM PST

    Hey all

One of my New Years goals is be able to do a handstand :)

I am considered overweight for sure. I'm about 230 pounds at 5'6. I am decently flexible.

My question is how much weight should I lose to safely attempt handstands?

    Can i do it now?

I was told different things, that it doesn't matter how much you weigh and then heard it does matter

Can any of y'all do a handstand?

    Let's converse :) thank you

    Help for Long Mat!

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 06:51 PM PST

Hello! I looked at past posts for recommendations on long mats, but most seem kind of old so I'm looking for a quick refresher. I'm looking for a mat for my tall (6'3"), wide-shouldered husband. Ideally, I'd find something around 80"x28"x1/4" (6mm), but this seems to be an uncommon size.

I LOVE my Manduka and I can get a long one for him, but it's narrower than he'd like. I looked at lululemon but couldn't find the long version. I looked at Hugger Mugger and Jade and still can't quite find his dream mat.

Does any tall and wide-shouldered human have good recommendations? Cheers and thank you for any input! And a very happy, centered New Year to all!

    Good vinyasa flow podcasts?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 11:52 AM PST

I'm relatively new to at-home yoga, and I'm not yet at the point where I can flow on my own but know enough about poses/positioning where I don't want to crane my neck to look over at a screen.

Anyone know of any good vinyasa flow podcasts with 30-minute practices? My favorite online instructor is Yoga with Kassandra, but I don't see any of her stuff on Spotify. :-(

Has anyone ever heard of Innergy Corporate Yoga and confirm if it's legit?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 02:33 PM PST

A family relative forwarded me a link to their website and reading online I haven't found anything to suggest it's a ponzi scheme or illegitimate, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to get feedback from reddit before submitting my personal information to them.

I checked their Instagram and their last post was back in October, which was odd to me as I figured they would be more active on social media.
