| Scared beginner heated yoga questions! Posted: 18 Jan 2021 12:02 PM PST Hey all, So I've practiced at-home yin yoga for the past few months and that's the most of my experience with yoga, so I've been looking to join a studio. All the studios in my area are heated, and I'm a little bit cautious because I have asthma and a gnarly tendency to overheat, so I have a few quick questions— Would this practice be risky to push overheating? The highest heated class they have, I believe, is 106. My work schedule only permits me to be able to catch the end of the day sessions, which is typically hotter and heated >100 f. What can I do to help prevent overheating and keep myself feeling well in this environment? How should I communicate these concerns to my instructor, and how can I avoid being a distraction for other people in there and avoid being a nuisance for my instructor? What are some general tips you would give somebody interested in actively participating at a studio like myself? Thank you so much [link] [comments] |

| Posted: 18 Jan 2021 05:37 PM PST I got some airtime for the first time ever in pincha today, but the only way it worked was my arms were more angled in (not totally like a supported headstand but the middle ground of the two) rather than perpendicular. Is that the wrong way entirely or is this perhaps a good first step? I don't want to start forming bad habits, but I've never been able to get up before with my arms completely perpendicular. | Posted: 18 Jan 2021 05:31 PM PST I had to suspend my yoga practice because my lack of flexibility was making most poses impossible. I embarked on a dedicated flexibility pursuit, but I'm finding that most online flex classes still assume a level of flexibility I don't have. Of all the places in my body that have limited mobility, the one no one seems to talk about is ankles. I've notice the online instructors are all able to create a straight line from the front of the shin down past the top of the foot. At my full foot extension, I still have a 45 degree angle at the ankle. Flexion is equally limited; in a Plank I'm right on top of my toes because I can't flex my foot enough to tuck them. Is ankle flexibility trainable? I'm about 4 months into my flex focus and I'm not noticing any change. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
| Seeking feedback on a situation trying to pick a hot yoga studio Posted: 18 Jan 2021 03:43 PM PST Let me preface this post with the statement that I understand yoga studios, first and foremost, must operate like a business for sustainability. (Also, I tried to be as objective as possible, but I apologize in advance if this comes across as a rant.) I'm currently at a crossroads with my yoga practice. Hot yoga has been my therapy and saving grace. I've been with one ownership since day one a couple years back and didn't have a problem until the last few months. Long story short, they implemented a new membership program that would increase rates by about 25-45%, depending on what you were paying before. Not only that, with about a two-week notice, members with unlimited memberships were told that our current rates would now only allow us 8 classes a month and that for unlimited classes, we would have to pay the newly increased rates. Everyone would be "grandfathered" into the new system. (Another thing is, after some Internet searching, I read comments saying the studio deleted negative reviews. Idk how, but I also happened to see that the owner, pretending to be a member, had given their studios five-star reviews.) The backstory to this is that when COVID happened, the studio continued to charge us our regular rates when the studio closed under the reasoning that they were providing Zoom classes. Granted the owner has five locations, but they claimed to be "small business." A lot of us tried to be understanding and just went with the studio's decision to keep charging us without actually being in a 105F room. A lot of us feel like we got a slap in the face for our loyalty and support, not to mention that TBH (since returning) the classes have seemed a bit packed for social distancing, they have continued to promote international wellness retreats as if there's no pandemic, and classes are difficult to get into without booking three weeks in advance. Because of this growing frustration, I tried out a new hot yoga studio in the area. The staff was friendly, but social distancing didn't seem to be followed (and no temp checks), it's a bit of a drive, and (I believe this is the main reason I'm struggling to decide) I'm not getting the same good stretch as my original studio. I didn't think I'd ever say this about a yoga studio, but it simply wasn't hot enough. I have looked up other studios, and all of the studio temperatures are regrettably less than what I'm used to. But staying at my current studio just seems wrong at this point, given how they conduct business. (Btw, no other studio in the area, most of which are truly "small business" with one location, has increased prices.) I've mulled over this for about a couple weeks but can't seem to make a decision. I really want to stay with the current studio, but as a business professional myself, I can't seem to overlook how less member-focused they have become. Any feedback and comments would be appreciated. Thank you [link] [comments] |

| Posted: 18 Jan 2021 05:39 AM PST I have no place to go to take presencial classes and I don't really want to do it since I live with a high risk person, so I am asking you for your best advice to star this journey at home with no antecedents and no presencial instructor right away. I'm really concerned about positions getting them Well done to reduce the risk of an injury. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
| I want to get into yoga, but all the non-South Asian resources on Youtube make me cringe. Help. Posted: 17 Jan 2021 08:01 PM PST I am of South Asian descent. I want to feel connected to yoga. I want to take online classes as we are in lockdown/quarantine. However, every internet yogi i come across hasn't been a fit. This is fine, as yoga can be practiced by anybody. But two things bother me: One is the blatant mispronunciation of sanskrit words and lack of respect to the practice (i.e. dog yoga, wine yoga). Second, is the lack of space for South Asian teachers. I love Adrienne but we should make more space for South Asian teachers. It baffles me that she is the most popular yoga youtuber out there, and south asian teachers are struggling. This is part of our culture, and I don't see that on the internet. I already know that this is going to be an unpopular post, but I want to say it still. I feel like a lot of yoga is appropriating and not appreciating. Does anyone have any virtual courses/teachers that feel more authentic and more appropriate for what I'm looking for? EDIT: I regret posting this. I thought it would be a safe space to share viewpoints. As fellow people that are interested in yoga, we should be making space for differing thought. You don't have to agree with what I'm saying, but you should at least acknowledge instead of trying to convince me to think otherwise. If you can relate to this post, I would love to engage further. If you want to be critical and not accepting of my beliefs, please refrain from commenting. [link] [comments] |
| Find What Feels Good... worth it? Posted: 18 Jan 2021 05:04 AM PST Hello all, new member. As I'm sure many of you have, I have been doing yoga from home with Yoga with Adriene videos. I have a membership to Tone it Up, a women centered work out app but I'm feeling like I want to switch that out for something more yoga centered since it makes me feel the best. Has anyone tried Adriene's paid membership program Find What Feels good? If so, did you find it to really enhance your practice? Or should I just keep sticking with her free 30 day calendars? | Yoga makes me feel uncomfortable Posted: 17 Jan 2021 09:46 PM PST I've been trying yoga out to help ease my back pain. And it usually always seems to alleviate it but the only problem is it makes me extremely uncomfortable. I just do it alone in my room but for some reason it feels like the air is judging me and I just feel uncomfortable. Certain poses also feel kind of sexual which I'm uncomfortable with. The pose cat cow in particular is very uncomfortable for me because I'm not used to moving my body in fluid motions. I really like yoga though but I can't get over the feeling of judgement. I get this feeling like I don't deserve it and I feel gross. It just makes me feel exposed in a weird way because I'm doing strange things with my body. The melting heart pose is also uncomfortable because I just feel awkward with having my butt straight up in the air. I know that sounds kind of funny but it makes me so uncomfortable I can feel my face getting red. I'm going to continue regardless but I feel like it's going to be very difficult for me. Is this unusual to be feeling this way even just alone in my room? [link] [comments] |
| Posted: 18 Jan 2021 10:12 AM PST I have naturally very open hips that really enjoy being in frog pose. Sometimes I sleep in similar positions, it's just a very comfortable spot for my hips to be in. However, I am at a point where my chest, stomach, and pelvis are fully grounded when I am in frog pose and it is not really a stretch for me. While it's a great place of comfort, I'm trying to find a way to deepen the post so that I can feel a stretch again. Any advice? [link] [comments] |
