Advice for a first time yoga learner

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 06:04 PM PST

I've been wanting to learn yoga for awhile to help with stress and anxiety so I finally took the step this past week. I've been watching Yoga with Adrienne, but I'm really struggling with some of the poses. My body will just shake during some of them. Is there any videos of hers or anyone's that you recommend someone that has never done yoga to start with? I would love any advice you guys could give me!!

    Practicing without videos

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 10:42 AM PST

    Hey all,

I (F23) have been practicing yoga on and off for many years and would consider myself quite familiar with most standard yoga poses. I always have trouble doing yoga flows on my own and using my own creative freedom to lead me through my poses. It seems like I never stay in the poses long enough and always rush through my sequence while second guessing myself. For those yogis that have been flowing independently, how did you transition into that and what are some tips for staying in "harder" poses longer? (mostly talking about warrior one and two because my legs get tired) I know it would help build my self trust and intuition if I just let myself flow on my own, but I feel these blocks and I'm not sure why.

Legs go numb when I'm in a position that stretches out my hamstrings.

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 11:43 AM PST

I've been doing yoga or stretching everyday for lile 4 months now. I've done yoga on and off for several years. Now, when I do a forward fold of any kind, my legs go numb after like 1 min of being in the position. 20 secs in the position I start feeling tingles. I'm trying to do light hamstring stretches to help but not sure if it's working 😕 any suggestions of what I can do or why this is happening?

Vinyasa - Transitions you like/dont like

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 11:34 AM PST

Just curious about what kind of sequence you like in Vinyasa and which one you don't.

I like jumping back into chaturanga from most arm balances, such as hurdler's pose. I also like going from standing straddle splits into a tripod headstand and back.

A transition I am NOT fond of, is from warrior II into a high lunge. That's why I made this thread. I did two new flows this week and encountered it for the first time, this particular transition. It feels very unnatural to my feet.

    What about you guys?

Why is no one doing a warm up before yoga classes?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 09:29 AM PST

Ok, so I did a 200h yoga course, where we would always do a warm up before starting asanas. The warm up would be 15-20minutes tops, from top to bottom. I thought back then, wow this is unusual, but at the end of the course my body felt so much better and I had no injuries, not even soreness like I usually do when I follow online videos.

No one ever mentiones that your body needs warming up before doing any of the asanas, to warm up the muscles, prepare the body, wrists, ankles etc. and I've followed all major yoga channels and websites.

I always feel at the end of the practice like my neck still feels stiff or that some parts of my body are just not aligned.

I guess my question is why is this? I hurt myself so many times overdoing it which is partly my fault but now I believe a proper warm up (that's done in basically any sport) would prevent this.

If I ever open my yoga studio, warm ups will be obligatory!

30 years of yoga and still

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 05:24 AM PST

    Hi all

I have been do yoga for over 30 years and still have trouble with forward bends. With my legs straight or slightly bent, I can't get past 90 degrees. Meaning that I am sitting straight up. When I do a standing bend, with legs bent, I can easily touch the floor.

Does anyone know why this is happening?

Additional info: Pyramid , my hands don't get to my ankles Wide leg forward bend, I can't get to 90 degrees.

Pigeon, I can lye completely flat

    Headache after Yoga

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 07:16 AM PST

So every time I do yoga (especially when inversions are involved), I develop a really annoying persistent headache that keeps me from doing anything else throughout the day (and kind of defeats the purpose of yoga for me). It's the kind of headache where I start to hear a high-pitched sound and white noise. Does anyone else experience this or know of any solutions? Thanks in advance!

    Hot Yoga Dome

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 08:03 AM PST

I bought a Hot Yoga Dome to be able to do hot yoga at home. I've found a few streaming and video sources but I'm looking for others that focus on flow in a warm / humid room.

    Any suggestions?

Seated wide-legged forward fold- no pain? Not working?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 07:57 AM PST

    Hi all,

So I have been doing a regular yoga practice 2 or 3 times a week for the past 9 months ish and so I have a decent understanding now of which poses work what, how to activate the poses best (hope that makes sense) as well as my own strengths and weaknesses with my flexibility and strength in yoga.

One of the positions which confuddles me somewhat is the wide-legged forward fold: it just doesn't do ANYTHING for me, I don't feel a stretch anywhere and I can't work out WHY.

I can't hinge very far forward first of all, and I have to have my hands behind my back in order to hinge forward with my back straight, but I still can't find the stretch in my hamstrings. I have very flexible hips, a decently flexible lower back, and pretty poor hamstring flexibility on relation to these, so hamstrings is something I tend to focus on often in my practice.

Anyone have any tips or ideas as to why I'm not getting any feeling of stretching in this pose? Or any tips I can try out next time to do it correctly.

    Thanks in advance :)

Could it be harder for me to maintain flow between poses because I’m practicing as a short person?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 11:58 PM PST

I'm new to Reddit/the sub, so let me know if there's anything I should do differently here — but just wanted to see if any fellow short yogis out there can relate and/or have any insight to offer.

I'm 5'0, short legs and short torso, and I've been practicing fairly consistently for three months (all at home practice, have never taken a class or been in a studio).

I'm wondering if maybe certain flows are just not possible for me because of my height, or if this is something that may improve in time. For example, I can't move from downward dog to a forward fold "stepping up" to the mat as I'm instructed. I can't move from downward dog into a low lunge, either.

This makes me feel discouraged, like my practices are never really seamless. I'm not very experienced, so maybe this is something that will improve in time? Or are these transitions just not possible for my frame?

    Jaw pain from doing yoga?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 09:48 AM PST

Hi everyone! I've been doing yoga about 3x a week and I've started to get pretty significant jaw pain. This happened a few years ago when I was doing yoga regularly then, too. I had to stop because of a knee injury and I noticed when I stopped the jaw pain went away. But now it's back :(

I've read that if you're getting jaw pain/TMJ from exercising you're probably doing too much, and I'm just trying to figure out what exactly I could be doing that would cause this. I feel like I'm pretty good at stopping myself from going too hard on a pose and the last time this happened I was strictly doing yin yoga and no active yoga classes. It makes me think that I may be stretching a specific muscle I shouldn't be stretching? Or maybe I'm not using my core enough? Ugh, I love yoga so much, and I really want to figure this out. Help!

Edit: It's probably worth noting the pain is predominately on the left side and not on the right.

    Help with discomfort please

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 09:14 AM PST

    Hi everyone,

I started practicing yoga daily about a month ago. I have always had extremely tight hamstrings that my physical therapist is at a loss for treating. Yoga has been helping to loosen things a lot! I have discomfort in a few poses like a runners lunge and cow face pose. The front of my left hip feels like it needs to crack or something when I do cow face pose and in runners lunge the back of my left knee has a tendon or a ligament that keeps clicking over. Has anyone experienced this? Any ideas for how to make it stop?

    Thanks!!

Recos for lighter weight version of Lululemon 5mm reversible mat?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 05:23 AM PST

Looking to upgrade my mat (priority features to me: quality, 5mm, good grip) and research keeps pointing me to the Lululemon reversible mat. BUT I felt it in person at the store and it's 5lbs - too clunky and too heavy personally for me since I bike or walk to class.

Recos for a mat similar in features but physically lighter weight?! Thank you!
