Resources for New Yogis, Those New to r/yoga, and a List of Challenges for 2021 - Get Info, Share Resources Here

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 06:18 PM PST

A combination of the existing sticky threads, in part to allow for a daily thread for those participating in challenges this month.

If you are new to the sub or new to yoga, WELCOME! There is an immense amount of information available in this sub, and an excellent community of people.

If you're brand-spanking-new, please take a few minutes to read through the Getting Started section.

If you have a question, PLEASE try search and check out the FAQ before creating a new post. As noted in rule 2, commonly asked questions are removed and directed to the above - especially at the start of the year when the same question is often posted multiple times a week or even a day.

    New to yoga in general?

Feel free to share links or advice here for any of the topics listed below, or anything else you wish you'd known. Thank you!!!

Usual disclaimer: spammers, just don't. If you're not sure if it's spam, read this first.

    • I can't take classes, where do I start?

This post is well worth the read regarding learning yoga at home.

There's a list of YouTube channels and apps, both in the comments and the FAQ.

    • What style? (If you've read the Getting Started section of the FAQ (it's at the top) and the styles list and still have to ask, the answer is likely hatha)

    • What's the best YouTube channel? (There are about half a dozen people you'll see named over and over - there is a reason for this, these really are the community favorites)

    • What's the best app? (Down Dog is offering a free trial currently)

    • What about a subscription? What's a good one? Most offer a free trial

    • What mat should I buy? Do I need to spend a lot of money?

    • What should I wear?

    • How about practicing on carpet?

    • My wrists/lower back hurt from down dog/vinyasa, etc.

    • What did you wish you'd known when you got started?

    • Where is the challenges list?

      Here. :)

    New to r/Yoga?

Some copypasta from previous stickies about the sub

    • It's in the sidebar, it's in the rules, it's in the note when you create a new post. PLEASE utilize search and the FAQ before creating a new post. Especially around the first of the year, it's not unusual to see 3 versions of the same post in a day, asking questions that are well covered in the sub. If your post is removed because the answers are available there the mod team is not scolding you, we're just letting you know why it was done and reminding you that the answers you seek already exist. And yes, the mod team finds themselves busy doing just that this time of year. (Yes, both are available via mobile and app, tap around a bit, you will find them.)

    • /r/yoga is not the place for medical advice. This is always a handy reminder.

    • Addendum to the above - Yoga philosophy and western medicine are different. There is room for both in this sub. This means that things like subtle bodies and energy (prana) movement and chakras all have a place here as well as discussion from a western perspective. There is no demand that anyone agrees with what is presented, but rule 1 applies in these cases- be respectful.

    • Reddit's guidelines are still the foundation of how we approach spam in /r/yoga, and bans will continue to be a thing as needed. Need the details? Reddit's guidelines are here. If your first post to the sub is spam, and the mods check your post history and find you're doing nothing but promotion, do not be surprised if you're banned.

    • This sub is not for market research. It's a community. Requests for the sub to tell you what we love or hate about our yoga mats and t-shirts will be removed, as will asking us to fill out surveys for that or your thesis research or help you with your homework assignment. Those are not the only such examples. When in doubt, feel free to message the mods ahead of time. Established community members can message mods ahead of time for permission on a case-by-case basis. Blatant spam may result in an immediate, permanent ban (anyone that's posted T-shirt spam in the last few weeks has found this to be the case).

    • We utilize the automoderator to cut down on spam. This includes minimum account age/karma requirements. If your account is relatively new and something isn't showing up, odds are good it's been temporarily removed for manual review by mods- especially if there isn't a bot comment. Sometimes we catch them in the first 5 minutes, but sometimes it's a few hours between mod sweeps. If you've posted something that isn't showing up and it's been a few hours, you're welcome to message the mods (keeping in mind that it's possible it will be a bit before a mod sees it- please be patient!) and ask about it- including a link is much appreciated.

    • Your mod team is human (you totally thought we were unicorns and rainbow-chasing leprechauns, but aside from cosplay and Halloween, not so much). Part of modding is making judgement calls, and sometimes we remove things that we can't be sure there isn't a bot behind that turns out to be totally legit because another real, in-the-flesh reddit user actually did post. :) Much like the point above, feel free to ask.

    • The discussions on the Sutras have been collected on a wiki page here.

    • [COMP] posts have and continue to be raised as a topic periodically in the community. The mods, however, are done discussing it. The tag was instituted to allow those who do not wish to see those posts a means to filter them out, and for those who want to see them, no additional action need be taken. For those unaware and interested, /u/BeyondMars posted the following last time it came up to get everyone up to speed- here's the section on rule 4, to which I added the link:

Search the history of this sub for discussions on [COMP] poses. Probably two years ago now? There is a VERY LARGE part of this sub that doesnt wan't them to have a place here at all. The gist of it is that people come to reddit and dont want it to be like another yoga instagram, or something, I dont know. But there were portions of time in this sub when our ENTIRE front page was yoga pics. COMP was an effort to a compromise that would allow people to filter them out if they didnt want them there... In regards to the self-doxxing aspect. Sexual harassment, and online bullying have originated in this sub at least four times that I was made aware of. This rule was instituted to keep everyone safe. I don't care if YOU want your instagram accounts on the sub (self promotion?) but we are keeping people safer with this rule and the way we enforce it. Its going to stay. Take the extra 2 minutes and upload it to imgur.

    • Also on the topic of [COMP] posts (and I still can't believe it needs to be said): Sexual/sexualized/objectifying comments are not welcome here. Removals are guaranteed, and warning vs. ban will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

    • We've replaced the second sticky with the daily stickies, so here's the COVID resources sticky.

Yoga With Adrienne - Breath Day 2

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 06:04 AM PST

I just finished day 2 of the 30 day Breath journey. Adrienne mentioned the concept of using each breath as a new arrival. It took me a moment to connect with this. For me it means using each inhale as an arrival in the present moment and another opportunity to focus on the intentions I have set for my practice. I think it added a lot to my practice today and could benefit me in life in general. What did you all think about day 2?

Restorative yoga is amazing after a run.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 07:27 AM PST

I've been doing yoga for about two years. I recently have started running to keep myself in shape. I experience really tight calves after a run and sore feet, so I immediately hit the mat afterwards. Its the best form of muscle recovery.

I'd reccomend anyone else that runs to try this!

Crying After finishing yoga practice (TW body image issues)

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 04:15 AM PST

Today I did my second day of yoga. I cried throughout the whole practice like small little sobs. After I finished I had a full on breakdown and I can't stop crying. I just hate the feeling of my skin touching each other. The folds on my stomach that I feel. In today's practice there was like this touching of your ribs or like holding them and all I could focus on was my belly under my fingertips. I want to say I don't care, it's normal, I'm not even like super big just average but I can't. All the small movements I only focus on my body more. Does anybody have problem with this or am I the only one feeling depressed about my body after each yoga session?

    More strength or more repetition?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 02:20 PM PST

I've been loosely practicing for about a year now doing guided virtual yoga flows.

I currently practice probably 4x a week about 15-20 min a day. I do other light strength training on top of this and workout 6 days a week.

I used to be very strong and in shape, but I fell off that a few years ago. I'm not weak, but not strong.

I'm trying to build on poses outside of normal flow. I cannot for the life of me hold a head or forearm stand. I used to be okay at headstands but I hurt my neck and have been too afraid to do them since.

Do these poses rely more on physical strength, or muscle memory and repetition? If it's strength, what muscle groups predominately help with this?

    Back tightness in seated positions

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 04:28 PM PST

Does anyone know what could be going on here? Whenever I'm in a seated cross-legged position or with my legs stretched out in front of me it is difficult to sit up straight because of tightness in my back. I'm not sure if it's from slouching most of the day or some kind of weakness.

    How do you practice?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 10:11 AM PST

Do you read books, watch guided videos, work on specific poses one at a time, listen to music, etc etc etc? Just curious. I usually watch YouTube videos anywhere from 20-45 mins on an iPad in front of my mat that take me through a whole sequence

Is it safe to combine 3 30 minute videos for a yoga session?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 03:04 PM PST

while I'm not new to yoga, I still consider myself a beginner. My current goals are to be able to touch my toes , acheive front and center splits, and do a handstand. I know these goals can take months to acheive which is why I want to incorporate daily yoga sessions into my schedule. I want to do an upper body strength video (15-30 minutes) Upper body flexibility video (30 minutes) and lower body flexibility video (30 minutes) daily to acheive this goal. This would all be in one session. Is this safe? If not, what are some recommendations for how to go about my goals?

Bindu Chakra relation to spine and back nadis

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 02:51 PM PST

I have been training pranayama with a sort of mixed technics (hatha, tibetan and meditation with nadi focused awareness and imagination). Recenly i was able to feel the bindu chakra region and it does seem to have a clear connection with back channels, including the chakras region that emerges in the back. Does any one knows any authoritative teaching that tells what it is ?

    Any hjnt ?

    Thank you

    Live Zoom Yoga Class recommendations

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 02:34 PM PST

Hi, I'm in Portland, Oregon where there are a lot of great yoga studios but I can't find a single one that has an early AM live virtual class. I was thinking maybe I could find one that's in a different time zone. I'm working from home and struggle getting out of bed in the AM because I have no reason to before I have to start working and I thought a live class would be good motivation for waking up at a better time. It needs to start around 6 or 6:30 am Pacific Standard Time, any recommendations?

    Sequences for Self-Guided yoga?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 01:37 PM PST

So far I have tried Yoga with Adrienne, Down Dog app, in-person classes but anytime I have to move my head to look at the teacher's pose, I start getting head rush and hence discontinue my yoga practice. I have created a list of sequences that I really like and combine 3-4 of them to build daily self-guided practice (20-25 minutes). I am choosing yoga as a means to stay active and in good shape, hence trying to include sequences that involve a lot of stretching and building muscle strength. Anyone has suggestions on what other sequences I should include in this list?

    • Sun salutations
    • Warrior pose, half moon pose
    • Boat pose
    • Planks, forearm plank, side plank
    • Push ups
    • Bridge pose
    • Downward facing
    • Chatturanga
    • Cobra/upward facing dog
    • Tree pose
    • Chair pose
