Anyone else have a problem laying the top of their foot flat in poses where the body is in a prone (belly down) position?

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 03:56 PM PST

I recently noticed that my right foot curls in when I'm in poses where the top of my leg is to the mat. Even in poses like lizard lunge or poses where just knee to toe is flat to the ground. I can correct it (put it straight) and sometimes it's painful, almost like a pinch in my ankle. As with the rest of my yoga journey I'm allowing my body to tell me where to take ankle movement, but I'm curious if anyone else has ever noticed this, and if so, what poses helped with any ankle mobility issues? Thanks!

Looking for new sunrise meditation leaders.

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 07:14 AM PST

Hi, all! Since June of last year, I've been hosting a live meditation each week day as the sun is rising. A different yogi or breathing expert leads the meditation, and it's been a beautiful experience so far.

Our private group has 1.2K members, and today we launched a public version of the group so that we can slowly merge our content & members over there. Both groups are called "5 Minutes to Sunrise."

We're looking for more people who have a professional knowledge of meditation that would like to lead our sunrises. Because everything is free of charge (and I have zero intentions of changing that), the only thing I can offer in reciprocation is the promotion you organically receive during the course of leading a meditation. But our "Sunrisers" (the people who have led meditations with us so far) have had amazing experiences connecting with each other and getting new clients simply by sharing their light with our members.

As I said, it's a completely lovely, authentic space with zero pretense. If you would be interested in sharing your talents with this larger audience, please don't hesitate to join our group and reach out to me directly. My name is Jessie and I am so excited to connect with you!

What do you clean your mat with and do you clean the back side of your mat?

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 06:53 AM PST

I was using Lysol wipes but read that it might be too harsh so I bought a bottle filled it a quarter of the way with vinegar and the rest with water. Not sure if that's enough to sanitize it after a sweaty session though. Do you clean the back side of your mat? I don't hear anyone mention this which I find odd since you clean the top then gets dirty again when the bottom part (which was touching the floor) gets rolled up against the front. Lastly, do you let it air dry before rolling it up?

    Advice?

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 09:17 AM PST

My fiance and I are wanting to get into yoga; however there is one complication. She is a lung transplant patient the issue arises from her ribcage/ surgical scar. (runs from one side of her ribs to the other across her lower chest) because of this I'm trying to find a routine that's effective, but won't put her in more pain. Any advice is welcome.
    Thanks ahead of time!

    Question for yogis

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 01:38 PM PST

During my practise I always find myself inhaling during the times I'm instructed to exhale and vide verse- I notice this during cat cow the most. Should I actively try to change this or does it not matter? I'm aware of my breathing, it just happens to be in reverse to the teacher

Coccyx pain becoming a right pain in the arse!

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 11:18 AM PST

    Pun intended.

I had keyhole abdominal surgery at the beginning of December so spent the month recovering and, well, sat on my arse almost constantly. I've always been quite active and have practised yoga more consistently for a few years now. My job is 50% in clinic sat at a desk and moving around 50/50, and 50% driving to home visits locally. So I'm not really used to prolonged sitting.

Mid December/beginning of Jan I started to notice an irritating radiating coccyx pain every time I moved when seated, or stood up. Since picking up my practice again in Jan, nearly daily, I'm not noticing it let up. I'm back at work 3 days a week as I'm studying the other days, which means I'm back sat on my arse a lot of the time.

Even though I'm a complete fidget and can't sit still, so it's not like there's prolonged pressure on it, it's still really sore every time I move. I'm probably going to buy a coccyx pillow for when I'm seated to see if that helps.

Any suggestions to relieve this appreciated!

which yoga with Adriene series is best?

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 02:50 AM PST

hi! looked around for a similar post on here but couldn't find anything matching.

anyone have a recommendation for which yoga with Adriene monthly challenge is best, and why?

I've been doing yoga for a little while now so I'm not looking for a beginner series, just something that will help me work on flexibility and balance. I'm not super into some of the meditation aspects but I know that's a personal preference! let me know which one you like best and why its your favourite!

How can I get Down Dog to give me some arm balances?

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 09:50 AM PST

I've been using down dog and love the app, but it never gives me arm balances. I want to at least approach crow or headstand so I can slowly build those skills, but I never get any (even going up to intermediate II). I'm afraid to bump the difficulty up any higher because I'm nowhere near things like standing split which I seem to get a lot.

I recognize just adding my own arm balance practice is an option, but having a human voice guide me helps me actually get through the practice and not get bored/quit.

    Back pain

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 03:49 AM PST

Hi ! I do yoga at home with YouTube videos. I noticed that I get back pain if I do yoga few days in a row. However, I don't know why that is. I always try to have a good posture during yoga and I don't push my body too far ... Have anything like this ever happened to you ? If yes, what did you change to make it better ?

    Yoga Mat Moral Dilemma

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 11:15 AM PST

    Hi Everyone,

I purchased a Manduka PRO about 5 years ago and it still looks brand new (I practice about 1-2 times a week and used towels when I brought it to the studio). BUT, my issue is it is made of PVC. I purchased this at a time when I was less aware of the environmental impact of PVC. I should say my first ever yoga mat was the Eko lite but I hated it due to the breakdown over time so I purchased the PRO.

So my question is, is it better to buy a PVC mat that will seemingly last forever or is it better to buy something more environmentally friendly (e.g., cork mats, Manduka Eko) but you will have to purchase more often (thus increasing overall trash). Also, are mats from companies like Lululemon or Alo who don't use PVC but wear down more quickly pose a waste problem due to the fact that you will have to keep purchasing?

TLDR; Is it better to buy a PVC mat that will last a long time but is harmful to the environment or purchase a mat not made of PVC but have to keep repurchasing (increasing consumption)?

Where's the evidence-based info, books, papers, protocols re: injury/tension prevention/alleviation?

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 06:44 AM PST

    Hello,
I am looking to put together the most efficient, evidence-based warm-up, stretching, rolling, self-massage, general injury/tension prevention/alleviation plan possible, but I don't know where to look to find the information I'm looking for and would love some recommendations.
    -
For nutrition, general web searches easily reveal nutritional profiles of different foods, or foods that correspond to nutritional (e.g. if you're looking for the best essential amino acid sources, etc.).
    -
For psychotherapeutic techniques, similarly, you can fairly easily find info re: the therapies/techniques with best evidence for specific disorders (e.g. EMDR and trauma-focused CBT for PTSD, CBT for health anxiety, etc.), as well as studies on specific protocols within those types of therapy, such as CBT, ACT, etc.
    -
Even when it comes to finding what exercises are best for muscle groups/a full body workout, the info's easy to find.
    -
But when it comes to finding similarly concise, and evidence-based information on pre/post workout exercises, warmups, stretches, yoga asanas (stretches), whilst there're loads of articles on "what stretches to do before/after running" or "best pre/post weight lifting exercises" and SOME journal papers, it seems a bit muddier and harder to find.
    -
Any good evidence-based books, protocols, etc. that anyone's aware of? Any trained physiotherapists here have a good recommendations?

How common are mystical experiences with yoga? Is the mystical state a normal thing when you do yoga or is it rare and not many people achieve it? What was your experience?

Yoga teachers: I’m in need of help in designing a yoga routine for my very young dance students

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 08:54 AM PST

    Hello!

I am a dance teacher to our youngest students (typically ages 3-7) and I would like to start implementing a fun and fairly quick and fun child friendly yoga routine for us to do during our warm up. I'm not savvy on many different poses, but they seemed to get a kick out of happy baby, cow, and cat pose haha. Any suggestions or insight are appreciated! Thank you!

    Alosoft Goddess Leggings SEE THROUGH!!

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 04:13 AM PST

I just received alosoft Goddess Leggings in bone. I absolutely love them but they are see through! If I don't wear underwear you see my butt crack and if I wear under you see the underwear. Any suggestions to fix this or type of underwear to fix it? Anyone else have this problem with this leggings? I ordered xs and small. Xs fits perfectly and small has to much material on the bottom but still fits.

Tight shoulders, is gymming making it worst?

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 04:09 AM PST

First post here! Hello guys! 👋🏻

So I've (28,M) been doing yoga on and off and only gotten really serious last December.

Today my yoga teacher asked if I work out other than doing yoga and I said yeah a little, and he said ah that was why your shoulders were so tight.

So I guess my question is: Is working out (push ups, barbell curls, chair dips) making my shoulders tighter? I do enjoy them a lot, and is wondering if these 2 activities are clashing. :\

Or is there something else I could add to my routine to open up my shoulders? Thanks in advance!

    Workshop ideas for beginner students?

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 07:35 AM PST

I've been asked to teach a one-off 60 min workshop for an organisation where the students will mostly be beginners. Rather than a standard yoga class they want me to focus on one aspect. Normally I might do something like arm balances for a workshop but think that may be too advanced. Any ideas?
