One of the best parts of buying my first home this year has been my own yoga room and sacred space ✌️

[COMP] very excited that I was able to balance in side crow (Parsva Bakasana) today!

I picked up my first yoga book (at costco) and I love it! Reading the descriptions is really helping with my understanding of what my body is supposed to be doing in the poses.

[COMP] Camel pose 1 month a part. Goodbye blocks!

[COMP] I had a baby in October by unplanned caesarian, and I've finally been able to get back on the mat safely. It felt soooo good to reconnect with my core, my body, my breath and my practice.

    Tips for working on balance?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 07:06 PM PST

I naturally am a very clumsy, wobbly person. I'm always falling down and keeping balances has been challenging for me. Does anyone have any tips to work on balance and holding leg balancing poses?

    Mobility resources for yoga practice

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 08:06 PM PST

For someone looking to work mobility drills into a yoga practice, are there good resources for types of movements that work well with a practice. For example, I can think from a runners lunge moving forward over the knee and back. Or from crescent lunge, moving in and out of tension on the hip flexor. Resources or a library that describes movements that can be done from a pose or even transitioning would be awesome! (I'm sure there are tons of movements that I am not even thinking of to do!)

I can't find anything on this problem: pinching pain in inner groin during supine side twist

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 01:24 PM PST

When I lay my right leg across, I get this very painful sensation in my upper groin. My left leg is fine. Does anyone know what's up or what might be causing this?

Linguistical significance in the word, “yoga”

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 07:17 PM PST

The auditory portion of words is an aspect of languages. "Yoga", a sanskrit word, contains a significance in its auditory aspect which is not present in any other language (let a lone English). That significance lies in "yoga"'s potential for use as a mantra, a repeated utterance. When the syllables "ee", "oh", and "ga" are repeated in the order just presented they take on a particular sound. That sound would be lost if you swapped any two syllables. It doesn't matter where you start though as long as "ee" follows "ga" follows "oh" follows "ee" and so on.

Try it out. Report back on your own sense of how the order of the syllables feels.

Edit- I wish I could have tagged this mystical in the title. I think the word is mystical!

Yoga for pregnant women that isn't boring?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 06:31 PM PST

Hi yogis! I'm 4 months along and recently got into yoga as a low impact way of doing exercise. Prior to this I was big into pilates and was hoping for yoga to give me a bit of a workout...but the prenatal yoga classes I've been attending feels soooo...slow, think the instructors are being super careful. Wondering if there are recommendations for a form of yoga that might be good for me but also more challenging?

Seeking advice r.e. Hypermobility & injury

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 02:05 PM PST

    Hello yogis!

I've been practicing for a couple of years now. I started doing yoga as just 'a thing I did to hang out with a friend' once a week. Fell in love with what it did for my mind and body, and last year practiced around three times a week. This year I have been practicing daily, with the exception of the past two days. I'd noticed I was having some noticeable pain in both knees, one hip and one elbow.

I'm hypermobile, but with weak joints. Bad knees run in the family, and my ankles aren't great due to a couple of serious sprains over the years. The classes I attend have great teachers who put a lot of focus in correct alignment and listening to your body. Early on, I was definitely trying to push into difficult poses before learning that this is not a good approach, and that my body deserved more respect than this!

While I do try to listen to what my body is telling me, focus a lot on correct alignment, and make sure to rest in child's pose when I need to; I feel like I am prone to injury as I often don't realise when I am hyperextending in a pose. Additionally, I can easily get into poses that might actually be 'above' what I am ready for due to my flexibility.

I guess I am just hoping for some advice on how to mitigate injury in my practice. Is there anything I can do to make sure I am not hyperextending, or to protect my joints while practicing? Any others here with hypermobility who can offer advice on practicing safely? Any advice is appreciated!

    BPPV and Yoga

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 10:51 AM PST

Hello!! I'm wondering if anyone here has experienced vertigo and practicing yoga. I had my first bout of it a few months ago during pregnancy. Now I'm 8 months postpartum and getting back into a regular yoga practice, and I had a major episode of vertigo yesterday after doing down dog. Gonna take a week off and let it all settle, but I'm wondering if anyone here has any tips or thoughts on this. Thanks!!

Safely working HIIT and Yoga into my workout schedule?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 01:58 PM PST

So I've started Adriene's 30 day challenge (Completed day 2 today. Wanted to give up half way through but stuck with it!) but want to work some HIIT into my training schedule.

Since I'm doing this every day for a month, which obviously burns calories, I'm thinking about working HIIT into my schedule 3 days a week and having two days where I just do yoga. What are the chances of injuring/over loading myself?

I'm sorting my diet out, too. I'm supplementing diet whey shakes as well as eating a tonne of protein, while making sure I'm getting enough good fats, but very little carbs, so my muscles SHOULD be fine. Just want a bit of an outside opinion in case what I'm doing is unsafe.

FYI I'm a noob yogi, so my body isn't used to it.

Any thoughts or other recommendations would be great!

    Right hip tightness

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 06:55 AM PST

I've been practicing yoga almost every day for the last 3 months and it has changed my life. My right hip is much tighter than my left and I suspect it's due to weakness in the hip and also in my core. I've been doing some side steps and squats 2-3 days a week and of course my regular yoga practice which varies daily. I'm just wondering if there is anyone with a similar situation to mine and how long did it take before your hip strength evened out? There are so many poses I would love to do but my right hip is holding me back. I know it's a process and I don't expect a fast track. Just curious about others experiences. Thank you! 🧘‍♀️🧡

Is “The seven spiritual laws of yoga” book any good?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 03:05 AM PST

I'm interested in a simple yoga philosophy or the "what" and "why" of it instead of the "how" and a friend lent me this book but the author is Deepak Chopra and I don't trust this guy .. should I read the book ?

Looking for name of stretch and what muscles it uses: Arms overhead with fingers interlaced outward (link in desc).

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 10:50 AM PST

I'm trying to perform this stretch but having difficulty. I'm trying to do it while lying on my back, but my hands hover about a foot off the ground. I'm trying to google the stretch for tips on how to improve it, but it doesn't look to have a standard name. Any ideas?

Personally, I feel a lot of weakness in my rhomboid/mid-trap area (mild kyphosis perhaps), and this position seems to help strengthen/stretch that area, but not as much as I'd like. Any ideas on how to deepen the stretch? I tried using a weight, but it's hard to hold on to in that position while lying down and fingers interlaced.
