Ashtanga yoga: Knee pain in Virasana |

I started my ashtanga journey at the end of October and I am now currently working up until Marichyasana C as well as some extra hip openers my teacher recommended me to do. For the time being I am assisting Trianga Mukhaikapada Paschimottanasana with my free hand in order for me not to fall onto one side. In order to progress in this pose I decided to add Virasana outside of my practice when working on the computer and adding a zafu cushion underneath to lift myself up. I have noticed that after 15 or so minutes my knees start hurting really a lot from this even though I am sat quite high. I was wondering whether this could be due to very tight quadriceps?
