Help in mobility and flexibility for jiu jitsu Posted: Hello, English is not my first language, so please correct me if you find any mistakes. Body Height: 1.67m (5'6'') Weight: ~140kg (208lbs) .. yeah .. big boy ... big fat boy Beginnings I have been skinny (60kg), very fit (90kg, competed in powerlifting, played rugby and ran 7 miles every day) and I'm now morbidly obese. Reason? Broke my rib and then my shoulder and it f*cked me up for a long time and I've been without continuous physical activity for almost 14 years. I've always been lacking in flexibility and mobility, never payed too much attention to it because the sports I did didn't require me to be very flexible, and if needed I could compensate with strength or agility to do what needed to be done. But I've always felt pain from lack of mobility, and how do I know that? I did pillates a few years ago (7 years ago) because I had trouble breathing due to back pain and 1 month of stretching gave me a big relief. Motivation I've always believed that more flexibility = better life, but I've never had the motivation to go after it. But this year I made a move to a better job (past jobs were pretty great, but this one is close to home, pays well, the company is amazing and I feel myself growing as a professional) and decided to finally change my life for the better after destroying myself for so many years of soda and s*it loads of food. I had tried in 2015 to improve and was doing great but then I had big family problems that will never end (health, alzheimers), but this year the disease is under control, I have a great job and I started jiu jitsu and crossfit (slowly, as to not kill or injure myself) and I noticed that I can't do many of the exercises due to my lack of mobility and flexibility, my muscle don't let me make the full move and it actually hurt the sole of my foot and my knee (it wasn't my weight ... it truly almost injured myself because I couldn't move the way that was necessary). Help needed I'm already starting today with the beginners program, but I need advice on a few more stretches. I need something that will help me support more movement for my knees, ankles and hip. At the moment I don't mind that I have back pain because I'll address it later. I really need to improve mobility and flexibility on those areas especially, because they will actually help me not injure myself so that I can keep on training and losing weight. Thanks in advance for any advice and help I can get. It'd really mean a lot to me if I can get some advice. And sorry for the wall of text, but apparently I also needed to vent a little bit. PS: I'm thinking of "Gogginsing" it up (like David Goggins) and stretch for hours every day, but then I remembered I'm just a human being and I might actually hurt myself doing that. Posted: I was wondering if anyone has had experience with reversing hard adductor tendons that have reached a fibrous stage. I spent a decade powerlifting and while I focused a lot on my posterior chain I did very little lateral movements, lunges, Cossack squats, etc. and very little stretching. Unfortunately it seems as though I developed a serious adductor imbalance made much much worse by commuting 50 miles to work every week for a year. I could tell something was wrong because my inners thighs would feel weak and unstable all day which I initially chalked up to standing most of the day at work. I went to the doctor when I started experiencing more wide spread dysfunction and lower back pain. Unfortunately, my insurance wouldn't pay for PT but I saw a physio who prescribed core/glute work which I expected. I spent most of a year doing hip bridges lower ab work, side planks, and Copenhagen planks, with little effect. I'm very flexible in a forward plane of motion, but the problem is my adductors feel completely locked up when I try to side lunge and won't budge at all. I can get maybe a quarter of the movement. Oddly I can get ATG depth if I Cossack squat hanging on to a pole or rack, but if I let go I fall backwards. The movement is never painful, it just feels like my hips are cemented in a straightened position. This has also caused my hip flexors to tighten tremendously which has thrown my pelvis into an anterior tilt. I'm going back to a physio but it's a way out due to covid. Basically, just wondering if anyone else has dealt with this level of tightness. I never felt like I injured or tore anything and have felt very little pain in the groin just progressing tightness. When I feel my adductor it's hard as a rock especially where it connects to the pelvic bone which is very concerning. I'm especially worried I will not be able to reverse it since I've caught it so late. Recently the only thing that's helped is doing a modified adductor machine movement but with resistance bands. When my gym opens back up I was thinking of hitting that machine with more weight on the eccentrics. At this point I don't even care about squaring heavy weight, I just want to be able to side lunge and Cossack squat with full range of motion. Any help or experience is deeply appreciated! pinching feeling on the outside of my lower leg while in a split? Posted: Whenever I sit in a front split, I get this weird pinching feeling on the outside of my lower leg, nearer to my shin than my calf (on the front leg). It's quite the weird sensation, almost like a tugging feeling on the skin. Originally, I thought it was an ingrown hair or something, but I have waxed my legs since the sensation first showed up and it's yet to go away. I don't think that it's any sort of muscle pain, though I know nothing of human anatomy so I could be wrong. It also isn't painful, more irritating than anything else. It has happened both while wearing pants that cover the skin and those that don't, so I don't think that it's related to the fabric catching on something. It only happens sometimes, so I'm not terribly concerned about it, but I was wondering whether this has happened to anyone else? Is this something I should be concerned about? Is this just some weird thing that happens to leg hair that I should just ignore (lol)? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]
Can’t tuck my knees into chest when sitting on a chair Posted: I noticed that when I sit with my legs up on a chair, I start to lean back more and the front of my thighs can't touch my chest. I also noticed that I can't place my chin on my knees when I tuck them in as well. Are there any stretches that help with improving this range of motion so I am able to tuck my knees into my chest without rounding out my back AND place my chin on top of my knees? Posted: I've noticed the day after I do bridge routine my elbows are slightly painful, nothing major but I don't want to be causing injury. I read that your elbows should be facing forward and not flared out. How can I prevent this ? Thanks [link] [comments]
Hit a wall, am I doing something wrong? Posted: Trying to get front splits and progress was going very fast for a little bit, now I just have a few inches left to get but I am not making any progress it seems. I know in middle splits you should stick out your stomach to make more room, is this a situation like that here? I usually do 2 deep stretch sessions per week right after leg day, I'm going to start stretching all the major muscle groups (mainly for better circulation), I also stretch lightly (1 stretch 3 times, 30 seconds each) once each day but wonder if I should start doing that twice a day and for 1 minute I also do lots of strengthening exercises for hamstrings and hip flexors so I don't think strength is my limiting factor [link] [comments] |
