| I cannot fully describe the positive ways in which yoga has changed my life. Posted: 21 Jun 2021 06:31 PM PDT There's all the physical changes - regaining the flexibility of my youth, regaining flexibility I didn't really realize I'd lost (toes, anyone?), regaining my ability to spread awareness through my body and my balance (I grew up dancing competitively). Learning my breath. But those things, as exciting as it's been to see my nearly daily changes in my physical body, I'm more impressed with the effects on my state of mind. Yesterday was not a great day. My 17-year old stepdaughter has been struggling with mental issues, and we haven't seen her since her birthday in April. Before that, we hadn't seen her since she was admitted to the hospital in January. We had 50/50 visitation and now barely communicate with her except through her mother. Yesterday was Father's Day, and she wanted to meet for lunch or dinner. She came to our house at noon, we ordered sushi takeout and played card games. The visit ended in a temper tantrum when she realized we'd gone through her room and thrown out things we found that were harmful to her. She screamed and cried and called her mom to pick her up, leaving without even saying goodbye to my husband/her father. On Father's Day. It's been a rough 6 months, and last night I was in a bad state. I cried for hours. Today was work, so I kept busy. And after work, my yoga practice. I've been following a 28-day program on the Youtube channel Breathe and Flow. 30 minute vinyasa followed with breathing and meditation. During Savasana, the first thought to come to mind was realization that I hadn't thought about my daughter for the entire length of practice. Relief. I mentally blew the thought a kiss and watched it float away like a whisp of cloud along with all the pain of the past 24 hours. It nagged at me throughout the meditation, but more from a distance. And I was able to zero back in on my breath each time. While I was in the shower, I had music playing, and I lost myself in the joy of singing as I cleaned my body. Without even thinking about it, I felt happiness, and I realized that I hadn't been happy since before the visit, and now I was. Despite the heartache. It still hurts, but I cycled through my despair, and yoga practice today helped me focus back on the beauty of the moment. I hope and pray that our daughter wants us back in her life again soon, but in the meantime, I'm here. Now. What a waste to let the moment pass without recognizing its unique beauty. | Posted: 21 Jun 2021 05:03 PM PDT I am a hearing yoga teacher, and recently I've had a student in class who is hard of hearing. I know typically yoga teachers should focus more on cueing than on demonstration, but that seems to be the only way to make the class accessible to her. No problem at all, I love flowing with the class, but does anyone have any tips on how I can make space for this individual and maximize her yoga experience? [link] [comments] |
| Any suggestions for someone who wants to feel more energetic and less fatigue? Posted: 21 Jun 2021 05:19 PM PDT I have check out several apps, and oh my god, the amount of programs and poses is endless, too many choices, I don't know what program should I do. I just wanna feel physically more energetic, less anxious and less tired. [link] [comments] |
| Janu Shirasasana variation with deer leg Posted: 21 Jun 2021 04:55 PM PDT So I've been struggling with poor core / low back flexibility to the point where I find it difficult/impossible to even begin this pose. Twice I've hurt my back by forcing myself forward to grip my calf or foot, which I know you are not suppose to do, but if I don't grip something I can't do the pose or feel any stretch in my leg or anywhere. Keeping my knees bent does allow me to fold a little but I still find it hard to feel much stretch that way. Finally I found the Janu Shirasasana variation with the bent leg in the same position as deer pose and it helps so much -- I can fold properly and get a great stretch in my leg. I wanted to share with anyone who it can benefit who may not be aware. I'm also curious to know if there are any disadvantages/advantages about this variation I should be aware of? Thanks! | Fellow men who do SUP yoga, what do you wear? Posted: 21 Jun 2021 08:34 PM PDT I'm finding that my board shorts restrict my leg movements. Should I go with swim jammers? Briefs? Something I'm missing? I definitely want something that handles being soaked. [link] [comments] |

| Posted: 21 Jun 2021 09:19 AM PDT Hey everyone! Any suggestions on how to loosen up and open tight shoulders? My shoulders, from backside, shoulder to neck and across, tend to be very tight and difficult to do inversions, some binds, with. [link] [comments] |
| I am a little overweight .. and scared !! Posted: 21 Jun 2021 11:47 AM PDT I really really want to join a Yoga group here in the Netherlands . I am overweight, not obesed, bit I feel like everyone will watch me and have opinions (not nice ones) I think I have more stamina than lots of people (mountainbike) but with my medication and also evening snacks I am not the smallest anymore . I always see small people at yoga . Are there any any people who are overweight and doing yoga or where and get smaller and healthier during yoga ??? [link] [comments] |
| Does Tai Chi/Qigong or Yoga have the same effect on the brain as meditation, or do they differ? Posted: 21 Jun 2021 07:54 AM PDT Does Tai Chi/Qigong or Yoga have the same effect on the brain as meditation, or do they differ? So do they effect anxiety, depression, concentration, memory and general cognition like meditation does? Is it to the same degree? I ask because since it's purely a mental exercise maybe it effects the brain to a larger degree? Do Yoga and Qigong hold any advantage over meditation for its mental aspects? I understand that yoga and qigong also have physical benefits that meditation might not have. I want to start one of these 3 seriously, and think I might have more fun and focus more if there is movement involved. My biggest goal though would be to reduce anxiety, thanks! [link] [comments] |

| Trouble stretching glutes on one side Posted: 21 Jun 2021 01:10 PM PDT Hi guys. So I have been doing yoga on and off for a year but have really ramped up my practice in the last 6 weeks , however, have been struggling to effectively stretch my left glute. I have looked up loads of YouTube videos and have tried all their various glute stretches but my body doesn't seem to be able to get into a position where I feel a glute stretch. My left side is far less flexible than my right side, however, I have had no issues stretching my right side. My right leg is also bigger than my left due to some atrophy I experienced whilst my leg was casted a number of years ago. Does anyone know why it is so difficult to stretch this glute or whether there are any opposing muscles that could be preventing me from getting into the necessary positions. Btw my overall flexibility is still very poor, I'm still unable sit with my legs crossed! Also I'm 23 and males. Sorry about the long post! [link] [comments] |
| Posted: 21 Jun 2021 06:34 AM PDT Hey Guys, Sorry if this doesn't bekong here but I was thinking about it lately and wanted to get your opinions on this: Today is the international day of yoga, however it is also the day of the summer solstice, so the day where the sun is out the longest of the year. Do you think it's a concidence that both happen on the same day? For me, yoga is like a sun and helping a lot with my depression, so I personally find this pretty suitable. What do you guys think? | Hamstring tightness due to injury Posted: 21 Jun 2021 11:57 AM PDT Hello everyone and happy international yoga day! I was wondering if anyone here has dealt with hamstring tightness after an injury, and maybe has some tips on gentle streching - or perhaps some motivational words. I got into yoga six months ago and I love it! But this hamstring strain is causing me a lot of frustration, and I feel like I'm not progressing at all meanwhile the injury is not getting any better. I hope someone can help! [link] [comments] |
| Child’s pose modification/alternative? Posted: 21 Jun 2021 08:07 AM PDT I can't fully bend my knee because of an injury so I can't currently do child's pose - anyone have any ideas what I should do instead? [link] [comments] |
