I did gymnastics for a little over a year as a kid and I never realized how intense the program apparently was

I was watching this stretching video on youtube even tho i usually just do whatever and she was talking about backbends. Shes saying how for beginners just do something simple but for advanced was doing the backbend and raising up.

At the place I went to, the advanced version was seen as very normal, and the advanced there was folding backwards into it.

This is so wild to me??? Like it was very fast paced and skill based, i could never fully learn how to do a lot of the basic flips like cartwheels or ariels or one handed ones, but i figured that was just me not getting it and the instructors not being able to explain it and me not fully trusting myself or something like that.

Is the youtube video right? Or the program i went to? I feel like it just depends on the skill level but they just had us start on the "advanced" one. Like it wasn't instant but it definitely would've been nice to start out more gradually

question from a beginner: how do i know i'm stretching right? is listening to the natural resistance of my muscles holding me back or is it how i'm supposed to stretch?

since i'm new to this, i'm basically asking if i have the right mindset or not.

i've been doing pretty intensive hip and leg stretching to try to get my splits down. while i'm stretching, i go as deep as i can before my muscles seem to naturally resist, at which point i usually stop and hold that position. however, i noticed that if i ignore the way my muscles naturally react and force myself to relax into, i am able to go much deeper into the stretch, BUT i feel that i don't have much control over my limits (hard to gauge the change in pain) and it feels dangerous to ignore the instinctual resistance my muscles have. at the same time though, i fear that im missing out on the opportunity to properly test my limits.

i hope what i'm trying to convey makes sense. i feel like i've already plateaued because i'm missing the fundamental mindset!

    Am I stretching too much?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2021 03:09 AM PDT

I have extreme anxiety and the only thing that eases it, besides Xanax which I hate, is exercise and stretching.

I probably stretch about 5-6 times a day, at least one of them being deep. I am, especially in my splits, seeing progress but I'm always feeling sore and tight.

I know I've sort of spelled out the obvious answer just based on how I'm feeling but I only feel this way in my legs, not in my back thru upper body (which I include in those stretching routines).

    Any thoughts appreciated!
