How to diagnose tightness/weakness problems as a beginner?

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 05:28 PM PDT

Basically title. Got back into Gym after lockdown has lifted and life allowed me to, and while my muscular gains are visibly gone, I had no clue I'd lost this much flexibility.

My squats can only work with thick plates under my heels, deadlifts make my hamstrings cramp, and I don't know how to fix it. I've read so much conflicting info. Are my hamstrings tight or weak? Same with my hip flexors and calves? Do I just assume they're weak/tight and stretch/strengthen them both?

Am I okay to keep squatting and deadlifting in the meantime as I am? Can anyone recommend an all round beginner routine for me. I'm genuinely so stuck and have 0 clue how to get back to where I was.

    Help I’m too flexible

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 02:33 AM PDT

I'm hyper mobile so my joints go past the point they're supposed to naturally. Because of this it's very difficult to get a deep stretch in and my muscles constantly ache. I've done yoga and that helps when I get really deep into it but I still don't know how to stretch my lower back. My PT said he'd never seen someone as flexible as me. I just want to relieve my lower back pain please help

Best stretches to help my back leg get lower during forward splits?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 02:17 AM PDT

I make sure that both of my legs are straight, but I feel like my back leg is preventing me from getting lower.

Does streching / improving your flexibility prevent muscle contractions?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 02:03 AM PDT

I've been going to the gym for the past 5-6 years and although not always, quite often i find myself having muscle contractions like torticolis, most often in the neck / upper back regions of the back. Would streching help me prevent these problems? If the answer is yes, could you recommend any streches for the neck / upper back?

    Good stretch avoiding the knees?

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 08:50 PM PDT

I really want to improve my flexibility but so many posts here and stretches I try make my knees hurt just looking at them! Anybody else have bad knees? And I mean they pop whenever I crouch down, and have ever since I was a kid! Would love leg stretch recommendations that avoid stress on the knees

    Thanks in advance ❤️

Which split variation is easier on the knees

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 06:37 PM PDT

    Hello fellow flexibility enthusiasts,

I injured my right knee with a bad landing after a jump. I have been stuck for almost two months now and I feel 90% healed. I would love going back into my middle splits training but want to ease into it. Out of its variations (toes down, straddle, half splits with the knees bent), which one would you say is easiest on the knee? I am a young male and have my full splits and strong legs so please don't worry about that part. Thank you in advance!

How long before you start losing flexibility

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 08:01 AM PDT

I've been super busy lately and haven't been able to stretch for the last four days. I have my front splits and working on my middle, is this going to effect my progress? I'm planning on stretching tonight, will I be stiff? How long until you typically start to see a decline in flexibility?

A lot of bruising after stretching for split

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 04:33 AM PDT

Hey everyone! Hope you're having a great day.

I recently started to train/stretch for middle splits. With some great routines from SaturnoMovement and Tom Merrick I managed to get quite deep in only ~3 sessions focusing on specifically that and some pancake.

And while stretching I try to never push too hard and have generally seen lots more improvement with pushing ~70% of your max + rest instead of going all the way. So I tent to avoid too much pain. My pain level has always been quite high and with the middle splits I didn't find it too painful, besides the bit of "good" pain that everyone seems to say is normal with middle splits in particular.

Anyway, doing these I suddenly got lots more range of motion with my lower back and letterly from 1 day to the next i was able to go from pretty much no progression in pancake (my back actually slightly backwards was my max) to me touching the floor with my hands and straight back.

All this felt super good and felt like I was pushing myself but never too crazy, always relatively comfortable, always made sure nothing felt too painful. I was able to go deeper the next days and it felt good on my tendons/muscles. Especially the tendon going from the hip>upper leg>lower leg really felt like it was on fire during the stretch (in a nice way) and was finally able to stretch it deeply.

However.. After a few days a blue bruise started to appear and when stretching it started to be painful (only when stretching the tendon in middlesplit/pancake etc, any stretch that specifically targeted that tendon). Besides that, in day to day life or yoga it is not hurting at all. So I left it thinking it was all good.

Over the last few days the bruise has been growing to a huge spot covering about half of the bottom part of my upper leg. It still doesn't really hurt and can also massage/touch the spot without feeling any painful sensation. But it still has me worried since it's growing, since today (~1 week after) the upper leg muscle feels a bit rough when I engage it, but still nothing worrying tbh.

Any of you have had experience with this? Thanks!

    Differentiating sciatic stretch vs calf/hamstring

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 08:04 AM PDT

My pike flexibility has always been terrible but I'm starting to think that it's not my hamstrings because during a pike or seated stretches I feel a sharp, intense stretch in the back of my knees down into the top of my calves while there's almost no sensation above my knee joint. How do you determine if it's actually my calves lacking flexibility or if it's a sensitive sciatic nerve that's limiting my flexibility?
