Pro Tip: Want to stop overthinking during meditation or during your daily life? Stop moving your eyes!

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 08:35 AM PDT

Hey everyone! I just wanted to share a little tip that's been helping me for the last year or two of my meditation journey. I believe I learned this tip from a comment in this subreddit a while ago but it didn't get much attention so I wanted to ensure that more people saw it.

Basically, if you catch yourself in a huge whirlwind of thoughts while meditating, pay attention to what your eyes are doing. In most cases, they'll be darting around instead of staying still. Once you notice this, try holding your gaze in one position (this can be done with eyes opened or closed). You should immediately notice a much lower rate of thoughts.

You can even try this right now. Find any object, or the wall, then stare at it without moving your eyes. You should notice your thoughts are coming in much less frequently and are far more manageable.

The reason I decided to share the tip this morning is because I was just discussing REM sleep and dreaming with someone. For those that don't know, your REM sleep cycle is the phase of your sleep where your mind becomes most active and has dreams...

And guess what REM stands for...RAPID EYE MOVEMENT!

I may not be the first person to make this correlation between REM and meditation, but I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere before so I thought it may be a cool discovery that we could all benefit from in here.

So the next time you're meditating, or going about your daily life, and notice an overwhelming amount of thoughts creeping in, notice if your eyes are looking around rapidly and then hold them in place for a little while until the influx of thoughts subsides.

Give it a try and let me know your thoughts!

I noticed I argue with imaginary people in my head all day long. How do I stop.

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 03:07 PM PDT

    Hey, everyone! Thanks for reading.

I recently started meditating with the goal of being more in the present moment. It definitely made me more aware of my thoughts, and I noticed a very frequent pattern in my thinking - Whenever my mind has time to rest, I start to have arguments with imaginary people that disagree with me. I've noticed they're mostly about politics and economics. I spent most of last year leading up to the election listening to political commentators on youtube, trying to be a well-informed citizen. But I noticed it just made me hateful of people with differing opinions, so after the election I unsubscribed to all the channels. I also got off twitter because I was having too many arguments with people about why I think I'm right and why I think they're wrong (Total waste of time, lol)

But still, when I'm going about my day (Walking to a coffee shop, going on a hike, showering, etc), I'll notice that my brain drifts towards imaginary arguments explaining my political thoughts to someone that disagrees with me. It's a total waste of mental energy, and I'm upset at myself that that's what my brain defaults to when it's not busy. Meditation made me aware of it, but now I'm wondering...

What do I do about it? How do I stop that? I've noticed whenever it starts, Intentionally thinking about something else and acknowledging that that's a dumb use of thoughts is making it come back less frequently, but it still comes back. Has anyone experienced something similar? If so, What did you do about it?

Can't wait to hear your replies, thanks for reading. :)

A mantra for those that are so hard on themselves <3

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 10:25 PM PDT

    "No reprimand; Only presence."

This mantra I have found has been serving me so much value, I wanted to share it with you all. If any of you are as hard on yourselves as I am on myself, this might be for you.

When you catch yourself being hard on yourself, repeat:

    "No reprimand; only presence"

And come back to your awareness.

When, in your meditation practice, your mind drifts into rabbit holes of thoughts and emotions, and you notice, and your reaction is to get annoyed at yourself for losing your awareness, repeat:

    "No reprimand; only presence"

When you realise you are engaging in behaviour that you don't want to be doing, and there is a negative reaction, repeat:

    "No reprimand; only presence"

Life is difficult enough without beating ourselves up for our missteps. So don't be too tough on yourself - that way lies guilt, pain and self-loathing. What helps us move forward is hitting pause on the automatic actions, recognising those missteps, and interpreting them as an opportunity to come back to the present, once again, without negativity directed inwards.

Looking for advice for trance-like state

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 08:57 PM PDT

Hey everyone! I have a situation that isn't exactly meditation but i gather i can get help here, if this is not a good place to post this do let me know and i'll remove it, i'm just looking for some help.

So i have what i call a "mind palace", it's a mental tool associated to the mnemonic Method of Loci that involves visualization of objects in a physical space to recall information, I've developed it to the point if having essentially a library worth of information about different subjects in my head that i can access at any time. I also use my mind place as a sort of "safe space" to just think, be it either to solve problems, reflect on situations, or just organize my thoughts, the way the palace is built visually (the physical space i imagine basically) is made for me to feel as comfortable in it as possible.

So when i use my palace in private (like in my room alone) i find it really easy to slip into a sort of "trance-like" state, the outside world sort of fades and it's a lot like daydreaming but more controlled and with a purpose, to the point that several hours can pass and it won't feel as so much time. The problem i'm facing is achieving this state when in public, i have too many distractions and sometimes it'd be particularly useful to immerse myself like that when in public and i can't seem to manage

The reason i'm asking for advice here is because from what i gather Meditation doesn't necessarily have to be the typical things we see in movies, from what i understand a "meditative state" can be accomplished when you do something like drawing, or playing music, or just laying in bed listening to music, basically anything of that sort that you can just "loose yourself in", which is very similar to the feeling of getting immersed in my mind palace, hence why i think i can get help here

So basically i'm looking for help to achieve that meditation-like state in public, and if possible strengthen it in private

Thanks in advance to anyone that answers!

How do you know that your meditation is completed?

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 02:47 AM PDT

When I meditate, I find myself wandering; Is this enough? Should I stay longer? When I plan a 15 mins meditation, for example, I wander, should I set up an alarm clock? How do you know that you meditated enough for the day or that your planned time is up?

How do I get my thoughts out of “full-screen”?

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 05:22 PM PDT

I've heard a lot about "observing your thoughts" or "being the space around your thoughts instead of the thoughts themselves," but personally, my thoughts seem to take up my entire conscious mind. I'm not sure if I'm just wired this way or what, but I can't not be my thoughts.

How do o genuinely become more disciplined?

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 09:34 PM PDT

I know it's prob the same old story… but I really can't see my o discipline myself to meditate weekly.

I am genuinely really busy I have a ton going on but I still have my mornings and my nights before I go to sleep and when I wake up to meditate so being busy is a bad excuse.

I genuinely feel like I'm a pretty disciplined perosn. I do. For years I I've been going to the gym, I eat extremely nutritiously. A very healthy Mediterranean diet as in all natural whole vegetables and fruit with every meal. Barely any meat at all, usually only wild caught fish. I have a super good shake every day with oat Mille and it contains 7 billion cfus and a ton and I mean a ton of vitamins and nutrients and turmeric and ashwaganda etc.

I work hard. Really hard and in grad school full time. And I really don't mind it. I can discipline myself and I'm good at it and been living like this for years.

So why can't I discipline myself to meditate??? The only time I was able to really meditate and focus in on quieting my mind and doing yoga was curing Covid lick down. But since life has started back up I feel busier than ever and when I have the time to mediate I find that I jsut don't want to. I'd rather relax in my own way.

But it's like I WANT to mediate. But not bad enough to do the mental work…. How do I get myself to want to mediate badly enough ? How do I find that discipline? :/ I know I need it, anyone have any tips on how to become disciplined enough?

Just started and keep crying mid meditation, do I keep going or take time to cry?

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 11:25 AM PDT

Ive been meditating on and off for about two months now, at first it was really helping clearing my mind and I felt myself becoming more conscious of my everyday thoughts. However, the last few times I began mediating (12min session) by the time I got half way or towards the end I just couldn't stop crying. It's not like when I began crying I was thinking of anything that would be triggering but then I feel like I'm doing it wrong and don't know if I should stop or continue to the end even though I feel like my mind is racing now that I'm crying and not "effectively mediating".

Due to this reoccurring I've been kind of discouraged from practicing daily as I was before but I want to again because I'm so ready for the journey mediating can bring! I know others on Reddit say to continue but does that mean like in the moment continue or let yourself cry for a while and then finish your session? Or just call it a day and try again the next day with a fresh mindset? How should I take the uncontrollable crying, as something that just happens or examine it further? Any help is appreciated!!!

Anxiety when paying attention to my breath

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 03:15 PM PDT

I'm not new to meditation but I understand it is a lifelong practice. Whenever I'm guided to pay attention to the breath, rather than sounds, thoughts, feelings, the body, etc., I become anxious. I feel like I notice that my breathing is shallow and I become afraid. I'm not sure what causes what, but it always happens. Any tips on how to subside this, or if you're familiar, what you did? Thank you!

    A Beginner In Meditation

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 10:39 PM PDT

Hello! I've been pondering it in my head for a few weeks now. I guess I just never jumped in because I felt like maybe there was a starting point or something. I am a 30 year old male who suffers from anxiety. I get into this funk once or twice a year where it's a month long anxiety attack it feels like and I struggle to tame my mind and live in the present. I'm not looking for meditation to be the cure for my anxiety but a tool to assist me in learning to control my mind and maintaining that inner peace. Meditation always fascinated me, however, I am just clueless where to begin with it all. Is sitting better than lying down? Should I listen to music, listen to a podcast, or an instructional video on YouTube? It just feels a little overwhelming and I have been putting it off for that reason. Any feedback or pointers would be greatly appreciate. Thank you in advance!

How to keep pride in check?

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 07:59 AM PDT

Hello guys, i wanna say that like a year ago i joined this group, and i felt verry superior,i felt above anyone in my experience of meditation.

Now after a year, i realized that because of this i was actually bellow anyone here.

My question is, how can you remain loving and tolerant towards people, and understanding even if you think in error that you are a "more experienced meditator"?

How do you guys personally keep your pride in check?

My backround: Went trough some pretty nasty stuff, found zen, started practicing meditation intensely, also did some retreats, bliss, lost.

    Another world?

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 08:37 PM PDT

Okay so recently in the past few days I have been meditating through music meaningful to me, I do it as I go about my day. I have meditated more in the past more vigorously and was getting a good hang on astrol projection and energy control moving it through my body, even using it to heat myself up I tested it by sitting in front of an air conditioner on full blast and held my arm where I was going to focus my energy and it worked I kept that specific part of my body warm even under the freezing cold.

I stopped meditating or doing much of anything related as I became too busy but I recently started getting back into it slowly and I will be full of energy one moment then suddenly become faint and when my eyes close I see a different world I've never seen but I see the same woman who I used to see appear in my reaccuring dreams I had years ago, she would pop up then disappear. But now I'm seeing her again in different worlds ACTUAL worlds nothing like I've seen during astroprojection before, but she is always there and it's like she is calling to me and trying to pull me into the worlds I see. But everytime we almost touch hands I'm suddenly hit with a massive amount of energy and I snap out of it and my body jumps and I'm not tired anymore only what has been a few seconds of time passing. It's very strange. I ended up drawing the woman in one of my latest pieces of art without even realizing it was her.

Anyone have some insight on what could be going on and who the heck this person I'm seeing when it happens is? I used to see her YEARS ago in my regular dreams but I haven't seen her since I stopped meditating regularly.

IWTL: Pranayama All the Time, 24/7, Techniques for Mastering the Breath of Daily Life

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 04:04 PM PDT

In various books I've come across subtle allusions to the possibility of practicing pranayama in every circumstance. Specifically I think of quotes along the lines of, "breath can win wars, change negotiations, make or break relationships, etc." The sources of such quotes escape my memory right now, but some general sources could be books on flexibility, Christ consciousness, yoga, or hypnosis.

I also think of experiences with ayahuasca or psilocybin where one may intuitively connect to the breath and manifest amazing states of consciousness, physical release, and comfortable breath retention. (yes, I realize the import of attaining lasting, independent samadhi without the aid of plants).

Also, I think of how the breathing patterns, heart rates, and vibratory patterns among humans come into coherence with others in close proximity. (Dr. Joe Dispenza's "heart rate coherence;" Gregg Braden's "Divine Language (lecture)", Maharishi University's studies on peace meditation.)

Since breathing changes naturally, when engaged in focused activity like reading, playing an instrument, or meditation, it seems to me that forced pranayama, like practicing a few different techniques, would be only the preparatory practice to a subtler pranayama which we could practice all the time.

My only current idea on how to achieve perpetual pranayama is to practice meditating on the breath during every activity, and then to practice conscious (forced) pranayama during specific times, like we practice increasing the strength and flexibility of muscles which then translates to increased flexibility and strength in daily life. (Lifting a box out of the car? Thanks to the exercise yesterday now it's easier to lift and easier to twist and bend).

Of course diet and lifestyle would play a role, as a big belly or heavy foods make pranayama more difficult, and a sedentary Western lifestyle would probably not be as harmonious with constant pranayama as an active lifestyle, or a sedentary lifestyle focused on meditation.

Finally of course, we would eventually bring pranayama into some sort of sleep practice, like the Tibetan Yogas of Dream and Sleep bring asana and meditation into sleep. I am more interested on conquering waking pranayama first though. I just include sleep pranayama to address all the points that are on my mind. Does the natural slow and shallow breath of sleep need any additional pranayama, or is it already pure? Daytime breathing should be naturally pure, but of course it can be improved, so I'm guessing sleep pranayama is improved naturally as other aspects of life are harmonized.

I googled "how to do pranayama "all the time" " and didn't find anything, just different individual exercises. I'm open to critiques or confirmatory agreements of my perspective, suggestions for practice, and book recommendations.

For about 3 days, my meditation has been off. I can focus on my breathe but thoughts will still take my focus along with my breathing. It feels like I can do both at the same time. Thoughts are still active in the background

    I just can't progress.

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 04:15 AM PDT

I've been meditating on and off for 6 or 7 years. I had a good 3 month streak of meditating back in 2014 and I've never been able to enter back in that headspace. Longest I've gone is about a month of meditating everyday and I still seem to find the 30th day as hard as the first day. I've read multiple books on meditation. I've been to a silent meditation retreat in Thailand. I don't know how to go to the next step. The last couple of weeks has been about 20 mins each day where I just spend the whole time daydreaming with very short periods of mindfulness and awareness of breath.

Edit: I've tried eyes closed and open, controlled breathing and relaxed breathing, counting breath and not counting breath.

Is it possible to stop perceiving time?

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 04:40 AM PDT

I awoke from a twenty minute nap today that felt like it could have been hours/days. For a brief moment I lost all sense of time and space. Is there some kind of meditation practice that can make this feeling permanent, since a lot of the stress in my life comes from my perception of time? Thanks in advance.

    Meditation while watching YouTube/Twitch

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 01:46 PM PDT

This is probably an absurd question to some, but I really want to hear somebody respond. I was wondering if it's possible to watch some passive Twitch or YouTube content while getting the benefits of meditation. I'm mostly talking about content with little or no speaking. For example, a gamer playing a quiet game without saying much. Another example I like to watch an antique restorer who just does his work without saying a word, you just hear the whirring of the tools. Anyway, if I can watch in a detached manner while concentrating on my breathing, can this still be beneficial?

    Strange experience while meditating

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 11:12 AM PDT

A long time ago I had a strange experience while meditating. I meditated for about an hour and was very deeply in meditation. Suddenly there was something like lightning flashes through my back. Like an electrical impulse. It was very strongly and I was totally scared. It felt very uncomfortable. What could that have been? Has anyone ever had a similar experience?
