Reason Why It Takes Time for Meditation to "Work" Posted: 22 Jul 2021 09:36 AM PDT I've been a lurker on this sub and I think at least once a week there is a post generally regarding the following inquires:
I wanted to give some context and insight regarding these inquiries because as humans (especially in the modern-day and age) we are programmed to want instant results/gratification and if we don't see immediately see a difference - our confidence is deterred and no longer believe in the habit of meditating. I will be using the book "Atomic Habits" as a source of reference as it inspired me to write this post. So let's get right to the point. Why does it take time for us to reap the benefits of meditation? The main point I would like to emphasize is the following: changes that seem small and unimportant at first will compound into remarkable results if you're willing to stick with them on a consistent basis. A lot of people start meditating in order to improve their lives and hearing stories about people that started meditating and completely transformed their lives. But when reading these stories you have to understand that for these people it was a gradual evolution, a long series of small wins and tiny breakthroughs; they all started small before they got to this point in their lives. Too often we convince ourselves that massive success (such as being constantly mindful about our day-to-day life and mastering emotions) requires massive action. We put pressure on ourselves to make some earth-shattering improvements similar to Tibetan monks. Meanwhile, when we meditate for a day, we still train our mind to think differently, but it isn't particularly notable and sometimes it isn't even noticeable - but it can be far more meaningful, especially in the long run. The difference tiny improvements can make over time is astounding. I'll repeat it again, that when you meditate on a given day and doubt its work on your body, remember that a small improvement might seem to make little difference on any given day yet the impact they deliver over the months and years can be enormous. Breakthrough moments are often the result of many previous actions which build up the potential required to unleash a major change. People make a few small changes, meditate a few times, fail to see tangible results and decide to stop. But in order to make a meaningful difference, habits need to persist long enough to break through this plateau where you feel like you haven't "experienced the effects of meditation". lying down while meditating is the only way that works for me Posted: 22 Jul 2021 12:57 PM PDT I can't explain it, but trying to meditate in a standard seated cross-legged or lotus position has always been difficult. I become fidgety (both physically and mentally) in this position, my thoughts are erratic and completely hectic. I decided to try lying down while meditating, and it has been a game changer. I wouldn't say my mind becomes empty, but it is like night and day. I can focus on a single thought or mantra, my breathing becomes deeper, and I truly feel peaceful. Has anyone else experienced this? [link] [comments] |
I started the Headspace Guide to Meditation on Netflix. It’s wonderful! Posted: 22 Jul 2021 05:54 PM PDT I've never been much of a habitual meditator, but I've dabbled here and there. Lately I've been really overwhelmed with some anxiety and depression and my therapist recommended I start meditating again. Well I found the Headspace guide to meditation on Netflix and it's changed my whole perspective on meditating. I love how it gives you more information on the how's and why's of meditating. Each episode is short and includes a relevant meditation at the end. I've done one a day for the past three days and I'm overall feeling much less of the negative emotions I was feeling before. So if you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend watching! [link] [comments] |
Not getting any noticeable benefit for social anxiety? Posted: 22 Jul 2021 11:25 PM PDT I'm pretty new to meditating, prolly been doing it seriously/consistently for about 2 months now, and I have seen the immediate benefit it gives to other stressors, such as gad among others, but it doesn't seem to help my social anxiety/agoraphobia at all. Do I just need to give it more time? [link] [comments] |
Started Meditation and Deep Rooted Trauma Comes up and i need Help on how to deal with it Posted: 22 Jul 2021 09:35 PM PDT Hello guys, it's the second day of me trying the mindfullness Meditation, today after 30 min i start feeling a sense of dread and heat as well as my belly being tight, i stayed with it around 15 minutes but then it was too much for me and got up and started coughing feeling like throwing up but it was just tension. I understand that blocks and deep rooted trauma will come up with Meditation, but i felt awful (Dread and feeling big heat), is this what people call shadow work? Should i have stayed anyway with the sense of dread or was the energy from the trauma trapped and coughing was the only way to release it? Does anyone have any insight of what is the best course of action in those situations? [link] [comments] |
Might be better than meditation.... Posted: 22 Jul 2021 09:13 PM PDT I read a previous post on this forum regarding the difficulty in starting meditation. It got me thinking / googling. Anyway found this post and have used 750 words for two days so far and it seems to be easier to make a habit around than meditation which I have tried to form a habit around for years. Anyway, the creator describes this better than I can: https://betterhumans.pub/better-than-meditation-12532d29f6cd [link] [comments] |

Posted: 22 Jul 2021 10:05 PM PDT I'm trying to seriously meditate this year but I haven't been able to do it consistently, just now I've recently finished a guided meditation and stopped at 15 minutes and I feel great But I have a little problem, when I visualize or imagine I only get to do it in short time and then it disappears. I meditate in a dark room and my eyes are closed, other than the darkness I can see green and red colors swirling around the darkness Any advice on visualizing longer? Is there a way to make the image stay? Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 22 Jul 2021 09:40 PM PDT I'd been meditating for while now but most of the time i was just visualizing what i wanted but recently all i did was observe my thoughts and just took deep breathes and let those thoughts go and eventually i came to a point where there was nothing on my mind just the colour black and it felt good since it was the first time i wasn't thinking about anything but as soon as i thought of how great it was i started having thoughts again, so is the point where you feel see and think nothing what we are supposed to achieve through meditation because its hard to get to the point of nothingness and just pitch black colour infront of you [link] [comments] |
a google drive full with buddhist sutras and ancient zen texts Posted: 22 Jul 2021 09:55 AM PDT drive google com/drive/folders/1tpJtwIJjqEuz4TZ673UarzsgXLg1CdPp?usp=sharing You add the dots to the link, for some reason i cant share a link. Have fun. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 22 Jul 2021 04:09 AM PDT Tried meditation for the first time and I couldn't go past five minutes. It's insanely hard. When I was thinking of just my breathing I still had thoughts in the background, like background music. Thoughts in thoughts. I just kept thinking about my breathing harder! Even though it's just the first time and I didn't hang on for long, I do feel a little calmer. Trying is a big step. I hope I can stick to it. 6 minutes tomorrow. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 23 Jul 2021 12:10 AM PDT This can be very useful for example when exercising. If you are doing bench press and want to rest ~2 min per set, then you could do roughly 25 breaths in between sets. It directs you to be present and focused on the breath and consequently the workout, while simultaneously being a good time tracker if you can breathe in a regular pattern. Btw, you are now manually breathing ;) [link] [comments] |
Does anyone remember the old Yogi Tea brand tea, “Meditative Time”? Posted: 22 Jul 2021 05:41 PM PDT At some point in the last 10-15 years they changed this tea to "Relaxed Mind." However what I'm looking for is help remembering what the old primary herb was. They changed the formula, and the old formula was very helpful for focus and meditation. It was like two 4 letter words, I feel like it started with "h." I know this is a reach, does anyone remember this tea? [link] [comments] |
I have been meditating for 3 months now but I see no results. Posted: 22 Jul 2021 09:52 PM PDT Now I know that this is a common issue over here but here's the thing: I've been meditating for 3 months using AUM mantra chanting for 20 minutes daily. In the beginning I would have various thoughts while meditating but as soon as I'd notice it I would come back to the mantra. Have been doing the same thing for the last 3 months but still I see no change. Should I change how I meditate? Is this normal? Any tips are appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 22 Jul 2021 09:10 AM PDT Has anyone ever had this happen before? I feel a bit guilty for ending my practice early due to some seemingly unavoidable sad feelings about unfortunate situations in my life. Perhaps it would have allowed more growth if I would have sat with them, but I felt like if I did I would have become emotional regardless. I have been struggling with depression, and for some reason last night the feelings expanded and became borderline unbearable. What are some tips on sitting with these emotions? Has anyone dealt with this before? [link] [comments] |
Meditation/Thinking While Working Posted: 22 Jul 2021 01:54 PM PDT I work at a fast food place thats pretty fast paced when setting up the food for an order and bagging food for Drive thru. Anyway, slower paced stations like the front counter, taking payments at Drive thru, or washing dishes, I get time to think as I work at my own pace. My question is, How can I meditate while being aware of the present moment? How do I know if Im doing it right? But more importantly, What questions should I think about while I have time to think? DN 22: Maha-Satipatthana Sutta — The Great Establishing of Mindfulness Discourse Posted: 22 Jul 2021 08:10 PM PDT DN 22: Maha-satipatthana Sutta — The Great Establishing of Mindfulness Discourse This sutta sets out the full formula for the practice of establishing mindfulness, and then gives an extensive account of one phrase in the formula: what it means to remain focused on any of the four frames of reference—body, feelings, mind, and mental qualities—in and of itself. [The text of this sutta is identical to that of the Satipatthana Sutta (MN 10), except that the Majjhima version omits the exposition of the Four Noble Truths (sections 5a,b,c and d in part D of this version). Concentration Booster Meditation Posted: 22 Jul 2021 11:57 AM PDT I am new to the world of meditation and I want to explore spirituality. I have heard many stories from close friends about how meditation has changed their lives so I also want to get started. I want to focus on improving my concentration level since I have a very low concentration level that stops me from doing the tasks at hand. This is why I want to channel my mind to be at the right place at the right time. Thank You. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 22 Jul 2021 05:51 AM PDT I'm one week into meditating using the Headspace app, and it feels so good! When I manage to focus on my breath without distractions for several seconds I start feeling warm and fuzzy, especially behind the eyes. And that distracts me from my breath. That's all I wanted to say ✨ [link] [comments] |
Assignment (Challenge) Visit a local temple or center. Posted: 22 Jul 2021 01:33 PM PDT These days, since the pandemic is stabilizing, we can venture out. Having spoken to a number of monks, priests, nuns and ministers it is saddening to see some have to close down because of no visitors or funds. In fact many established centers, temples and monasteries that had many visitors see almost no one except for during funerals. This is a main reason they are struggling. So going to visit, leave a dollar or few, bring an offering ( I will explain about that later)... and help them out. You will meet someone new and interesting and you never know, you might just find YOUR place! S [link] [comments] |
Serious paranoia keeps me from getting deep? Posted: 22 Jul 2021 05:05 PM PDT Okay so, I have been interested in meditation for years. Lately I have been able to get deeper than ever before, and that was exciting. But after a few hours of hanging out in that fairly shallow state, I was again hit with the fear that I face whenever I try to go within whether it's meditation or self hypnosis, even sleep or attempted astral projection. Mostly, I'm very afraid of other beings interacting with me and at some point I basically always become convinced that they are there and I don't want to face them. It terrifies me and keeps me in the shallows. Lately I have been saving money to see a hypnotist specializing in past lives because I feel the need to see someone who can get into discussions about mysticism and other realms, not just a regular counselor. Part of me genuinely believes that I have been abducted by aliens and I'm terrified to face it, but also slightly scared to find out that I am just foolish and delusional. Often when I am trying to work myself down from these "silly" thoughts I will start to see what I perceive as… sparkles, glimmers in my vision. It scares me it's like they're saying, no. We are here. Or the other night I was trying to calm myself out of it and I heard what was certainly clanging in the bathroom. Maybe it was a mouse, my cat has caught one once. I know it wasn't my cat because he was in the bed with me. Regardless it always seems like these things time up with me trying to tell myself in silly and then instead I take it as signs that they are lowkey around. Sometimes if I start to look into my minds eye I think I'm beginning to see someone or something looking back at me. Maybe something is waiting for me to "get there" so it can finally talk or maybe I'm just silly. I want to move past this because regardless, whatever is going on at least respects me enough to let me live peacefully. I just want to develop the strength to face it. I hope seeing a hypnotist helps. I feel like I need someone there with me the first time. Sorry for the rant, but what do you guys think? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 22 Jul 2021 04:55 PM PDT My name's Avery and I'm a certified Spiritual/Wellness Coach. I'm currently in the process of creating an offer for women who are looking for guidance in leading an authentic life (one that is 100% of their choosing), as well as learning effective spiritual practices to eliminate high levels of stress. I struggled so much to show up for myself and speak my truth. I was the most stressed in my life and a big part of that was not picking myself enough. I was not giving myself permission to live my life and I was sick of it. I wanted better for myself so I focused on finding myself through my spirituality, changing my mindset, and choosing myself every time. Now, I am on a mission to uplift others who may find themselves on a similar journey. I've created a short survey with questions that will help me to learn more about the individuals who are struggling with authenticity and want to find confidence and clarity in their life. In exchange for 10-15 minutes of your time to fill out my survey, I am offering a FREE 30 minute coaching call OR Tarot Card Reading with me so I can help you find clarity.
