Matthew Sweeney and Nicky Knoff Talk Ashtanga and Beyond

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 04:55 PM PDT

    Hi Guys

Just wanted to share two interviews I did with Matthew Sweeney (one of the few people in the world to get into FIFTH SERIES) and Nicky Knoff who combines Iyengar and Ashtanga approaches.

With Matthew, I talked about Ashtanga and his unique approach to teaching the system. We get into yoga beyond asana including his practice of Advaida Vedanta and Kevela Kumbhaka.

Nicky Knoff shared her story of growing up in a prisoner of war camp, combining yoga with Goenka vipassana, and weighs in on some debates about combining styles.

We also get into pranayama and how that is an essential component of yoga practice for them.

I also have episodes lined up with Eddie Stern, Gregor Meahle, Harmony Slater, Prem Carlisi, Monica Gauci, Ellen Johanssen and many more.

We're on the usual podcast apps and at www.escaping-samsara.com.

I'm interviewing Simon Borg-Olivier today. What teachers would you like to hear interviewed on a podcast?

    Injury around rib cage muscles

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 07:21 AM PDT

Hi all, Last to last Friday (11 days ago), I injured the muscles around my lower right rib cage (probably intercostal muscles, looked it up online) while doing a very fast led primary from one of Kino's recent YouTube recording. I think it happened during Mari-C. I felt the pain, ignored it and continued with the ultra fast session. I later realised that it was a proper injury but still continued with daily practice. The pain never stopped me from practicing probably because of the heat in the body. But today it felt as though the pain had spread to adjacent area around the obliques. I had to stop practicing midway, as chaturangas and jump backs became too painful. Even lifting my hands up in the first position of Surya namaskara A and downward facing dog was painful. It brought out a lot of irritation and bad feelings in me. I am unable to accept the fact that I will have to stop practicing for a few days. My mind says, "I was so close to standing up from drop backs without support". I can clearly see the whole ego game being played by my mind. It's frustrating, I don't even know if I should stop practicing all together or take up gentler passive stretches instead of Ashtanga. Any suggestions are welcome :)

    Thanks in advance.

    Finding Balance

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 10:20 AM PDT

Hello everyone, I'm an Ashtanga noob and have been practicing pretty regularly even before this quarantine. However, time on lockdown has seen my practice, discipline, & will grow. With that being said, I am starting to notice slight improvements in my postures and I had a question for long time practitioners: my left hip is SO much tighter than my right poses like Mari C really highlight this. I can go deeper and it's not as "painful" (not pain pain, good pain) on my right. This morning I had a thought during practice. Should I hold my left (weak side) longer than my right? I.e. 5 breaths on the right, 7 on the left? And/or maybe not go as "deep" on the right? I'm wondering if this is a good way to find balance as I would not want my right side to progressively get more open while the left always lags behind. Any advice is greatly appreciated! 🙏🏻

    Books recommendation

    Posted: 10 Apr 2020 01:39 PM PDT

    Hello dear Yogis,

I have only recently started with Yoga, around four months ago. I got lucky since almost in the beginning I had a chance to discover Ashtanga and to fell in love with it.

Since I really enjoy reading I am curious if you have any books for a recommendation?
At the moment I am reading Patanjali's sutras, and practicing (mostly) by David Swenson Practice Manual.

That being said I am mostly interested in philosophy oriented Ashtanga or Yoga (in general) books.
However, if you have any recommendations for books that affected you spiritually (I know that might be a broad term) and affected your understanding of Yoga those would be welcomed also.

    Thank you :)
