| Posted: 07 Apr 2020 09:41 PM PDT I'm 37 and I can't believe how limited my flexibility has become. (Not that I was ever super flexible - I've never been an athlete, or even particularly fit.) I did a small stint of yoga a year or so ago as part of a pilot program at my then-job, and discovered that my hips are exceptionally tight. Since then it's something I've been really aware of, something I want to improve, but I really don't know where to begin. Fast forward to the pandemic, and with my newly cleared calendar I've been walking a TON. A ton for me at least, average seven or so miles of purposeful walking every day. Up from two or three miles of just incidental walking for the couple years prior to this. The walking has me feeling really good, but I want to balance it out by also working on my flexibility (and strength to some extent.) Today I had the random thought that pushing up into a backbend would feel really good as a stretch, but when I tried it I couldn't even push myself off the ground! Moral of the story: I need some kind of couch-to-flexibility program! Haha. What do you all recommend, where should I start? I would love some kind of (needs to be free) online flexibility-for-beginners program, but I would also love just general tips for good habits etc. I am a full-time grad student, working online from my apartment now. Spending so much time on my laptop on the couch. I really want to figure out better ways of sitting (on the floor I guess?) so that I am helping, not hurting, my flexibility as I work. In general, off the top of my head, my initial goals are to really open my hips up, and to be able to push up into a bridge. But I'm very open to working on my flexibility in a more holistic/comprehensive way than just that, in order to get there. Thanks in advance for pointing me in the right direction! | Help for a young guy with back problems Posted: 07 Apr 2020 03:24 PM PDT So long story short had a spine tumor in my L3 for about a year caused a lot of pain all that sort of thing, had surgery and got it removed (yay). It's almost been an entire year and do to moving and all sorts of other stuff I haven't gotten proper physio. My back still hurts and thighs get sore but it's manageable, problem is I have absolutely zero flexible muscle in my lower back. If I try and touch my toes standing I can hardly get past my knees, and due to the whole covid thing it'll be quite sometime until I can get professional help. I want to use my newly found free time to better myself so do any of you know any tips or tricks to helps me out? Any advice is greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] | ||

| Posted: 07 Apr 2020 11:35 AM PDT Anyone have any photos, comments or stories on their hip opening journeys? I've been practicing yoga and purposeful stretching on and off for a while, really committed this year, then like most got off track because of covid and am now diving in again during the quarantine. However, my hips are so tight. Painfully tight in many positions. They always have been but sometimes I feel a little down about it. So for some motivation I'd love to see or hear about your tight hips! [link] [comments] | ||
| Looking for a challenge to get the splits, slowly Posted: 07 Apr 2020 09:15 AM PDT Hi! I am looking for a program that will help me get my splits BUT I am scared of anything that promises "Splits in 30 Days!" or anything like that. I'm sort of close on my right side, but have never truly had it. The closest I every got was doing Bikram yoga, which I think was maybe not the best for my body and also not possible in my current state of social distancing. I am looking for either:
I like Yoga with Adriene because unlike a lot of the people I've tried, she seems reasonable and calm and purposeful, but doesn't over-explain or "promote" too much. [link] [comments] | ||
| Overhead mobility while sitting Posted: 07 Apr 2020 12:44 PM PDT Hi, Id like to be able to sit with my back straight against a wall and do two things. 1) raise my arms at 90 degrees and touch the wall with the back of my hands 2) raise my arms straight over my head and touch the wall with the back of my hands In both cases I can get my fingers to almost touch if I bend my wrists. What stretches can I do to help unlock those two movements? [link] [comments] | ||
| Posted: 07 Apr 2020 11:31 AM PDT I feel an abnormal pain when (1) attempting side splits, (2) doing front splits with my right leg in front, (3) sitting or crossed legged in a butterfly position (right leg only). I really want to get side splits and full frontal splits, but this pain is preventing me from doing so. I have actually tried to incrementally improve my flexibility, but once I hit a certain point, I start getting numbness in my right leg and it hurts. I have a strong feeling that it may have something to do with scoliosis? I did have xrays of my spine taken before, and it showed that I have a slight unnatural curvature. So I would like to ask: (1) Who has had this problem before? How did you overcome it? Thanks, [link] [comments] | ||
| Posted: 07 Apr 2020 03:07 PM PDT Hi! The backs of my knees hyper extend so that when my legs feel straight they're actually kind of concave. Is it okay/safe to do leg stretches with them hyperextended? When they're 'straight' they feel bent. I'm not very flexible atm and am working towards my splits during lockdown- my front calf touched the floor for the first time today but only because it was hyper extended! [link] [comments] | ||
| Having difficulties trying to stretch Posted: 07 Apr 2020 07:30 AM PDT I've always had this problem when stretching hamstrings such as trying to touch the ground with my hands which I can, but I can't hold it at all. No matter how much I do it there is a certain feeling behind mu knee in a tendon I think that doesn't hurt, I honestly can't describe it but I can't hold the stretch at all. [link] [comments] | ||
| Ex pro athlete extremely stiff Posted: 07 Apr 2020 08:56 AM PDT So basically I need advice to kinda get my body into somewhat what it used to be. To give some perspective, I had osgood Schalters disease, which was so bad that literally I was documented in some journal. So I had surgery done it and during my surgery somehow the operator sliced of my patellar ligament where it was touching the bone, thereby ruining my quadriceps functionality completely. Cutting the story short I had to undergo 3 surgeries all together, and since I come from eastern europe no one did proper rehab with me and ever since I am having a lot of back, hip, ankle... problems. Doctors and physiotherapist tell me nothing can be done, basically the general spirit of the entire country (nothing is possible). One thing I have noticed is that stretching intensivelyhelps a lot, but I really don't know what and who to follow for it. Thereby if there is anyone who is willing to share some links that could help me establish some sort of systematic stretching thank you very much! Ps. Also had multiple surgeries on my ankle..hockey was is not a sport that you want for your kids folks haha Cheers!! [link] [comments] |
