Have a "stupid" question and are afraid to ask it? (Or don't want to make a whole thread for it?) Well, feel free to ask away in this thread! There's no such thing as a stupid question. This is also a great opportunity for the rest of the community to help each other out.

    Guidelines:

    • As always, read the FAQ to make sure your question isn't answered already.
    • If you're looking for the Motivational Month threads from the past, they are all here in our Wiki.
    • You can also use the search bar to see if an answer to your question exists already.
    • We are not medical professionals. If something hurts and it doesn't go away within a week's rest, see one!

I want to give up (rant)

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 06:51 PM PDT

Hi. I'm a 20 year old male. i've been dealing with tightness in my hips for years (i also have anterior pelvic tilt) and have had 2 knee surgeries for a torn meniscus in my right knee and still have pain to this day. i've always been an active guy and played soccer growing up but for whatever reason i'm just not flexible.

I've tried doing daily stretches and even tried teaching myself yoga by following along on Youtube videos. And although it brings my some immediate relief I haven't made any long term progress. Every time I see someone doing a lotus sit (which is something i've always wanted to be able to do) or anything require above average flexibility it makes me mad that I can't do it.

Now before you tell me that flexibility is something that takes time and that I shouldn't rush, just know that I have tried and failed many times in becoming more flexible. I just don't see how I can do it. I saw a guy in his 60s able to do the splits and it just made me so frustrated. i'm tired of getting hope that I can become flexible only to not see any progress after weeks of stretching.

I'm tired of watching "beginner yoga poses/stretches" on Youtube and not being able to do half of the shit they say. I'm so close to throwing in the towel and just accepting the fact that the farthest i'll get in being flexible is being able to touch my toes.

I just want to have total control of my body and it just doesn't seem possible.

And before someone recommends I go see a doctor I don't think that will be possible for a while until all the Covid-19 stuff dies down.

anyways I just wanted to express my frustrations and see if others have ever felt the same way. Props to you if you read the whole thing.

Edit: I realized that I may have come off as a cry baby with no work ethic which wasn't my intention. I'm all about hard work but it's super annoying when you try what you think is your best and have nothing to show for it. I just wanted to share that sense of frustration with you all and see what advice that you have to give. And big thanks to those that are sharing info and tips. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Cheers.

    I have a question

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 05:05 PM PDT

This my seam like an odd question but it comes from a genuine place. I've been dating this girl in college before the whole coronavirus situation. I still text her and dm her and talk to her. But we haven't been dating to the point where we have introduced each other to are families. I'm just curious if anyone does contortion or is a flexible yogi what was the reaction of your SO family members when they learned that about you. Or if you aren't a contortionist or yogi does anyone one does anyone have any advice considering I feel like contortion tends to get an unfortunately gets a sexual connotation sometimes.

Need some help on knee pain

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 03:11 PM PDT

Hey guys, so I've had some issues with my knee lately and would love some advice. A few months ago while ice skating, my right leg shot out laterally and my knee collapsed in. Not entirely but for sure bent in pretty good. Unfortunately I was in a foreign country while this happened, and the medical staff couldn't help me more than icing it due to the language barrier.

Ever since then, it's been painful/impossible to pull my heel up to my butt using the muscles themselves. Grabbing my ankle and stretching up is fine, but not on it's own accord. Stretching my hamstring & calve has been helpful but for only short spurts.

Today I went to work on hip flexibility, and was doing lateral leg swings. The right leg would be fine while swinging, however when it was the planted leg, the inside of the knee was extremely painful. Everywhere I have been to has told me my ligaments are perfectly fine, so I'm wondering if anyone has had some similar issues.

    Thanks guys, appreciate it!

Having a rough time with ankle dorsiflexion

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 12:57 PM PDT

    Hi!

A couple months ago I discovered why I can't squat without rising my heels: lack of ankle dorsiflexion. I'm pretty sure it's not lack of hip mobility because I did a couple of tests and in the lunge test I failed tremendously. It could be worse, I can reach the wall with my fingers touching the wall, which is something.

During this weeks I've been doing a couple stretches like the stair stretch, I've been foam rolling my calves (I don't know if I'm doing it right, though), I've been doing squats with my heels elevated with books (but I don't know if this is useful)...

But I'm not noticing any progress. It's true that I gain a little bit of mobility according to lunge test, nothing crazy... But in the next morning I lose that. And doing squats it's a joke. I can't go down without my heels rising or arching my back.

I read that keeping a deep squat position (3rd world squat) helps to dorsiflexion but I don't know how, because I don't sense nothing in my calves. Am I doing something wrong? I do it with my heels elevated in a platform or books.

Can you give me some help? Anyone that has improved ankle dorsiflexion? I'm pretty discouraged right now, to be honest. Thank you.

Front hip(maybe hip flexor?) constant pain.

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 09:48 AM PDT

Hello there. Since the end of last year's summer i'm having non-stop pain on my left hip and groin, but mostly at the front of the hip. I've tried many stretches and rehab programs on and off but still the pain wouldn't stop.

Positions i have the most pain:

1)Lying down and bringing knee to chest, in this position not only i feel my hip flexor aching but i also feel pain at the top my thigh but more like a numbness pain, like it's some kind of nerve i guess.

2)Standing up after i had my stretches.

Basically i feel pain in ever position. I'm thinking it might be the lack of strength in core/glute section.

Any ideas on what it would be? Have you had something similar?

    Active flexibility exercises?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 05:01 AM PDT

I have my splits but do not have the active flexibility for leg holds and other similar things unassisted (not using hands, a band or my own body weight). What are some exercises or stretches you would recommend to develop active flexibility?
