Woke up full of hatred. Meditated for 40 minutes. Now hatred is only half as much. Gratitude.

I mean that I feel some gratitude now that the hatred has reduced itself and isn't torturing me as much as it was.

It is from this primordial awareness, beyond the limited mind, and egoic self interest, that we can begin to dream a new dream for the Earth.

My experience and a newbie advice: what made my meditation practice better

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 03:19 PM PDT

Some years ago, during a though time, I started meditating. It was a way to see things a little more positively and to feel better about myself, because I costantly judge myself. It worked for a while, but then I stopped seeing progress. The meditation began to be frustrating and when the period has passed I interrupted it. Now I am going through another tough period and I decided to try again. I thought I understood the concept of acceptance, but now I realise that I used to see meditation as a duty and as a way out of my pain. Meditation is not about this. It is about looking and understanding, is about being comfortable with yourself the way you are and you prefer. My meditation was frustrating because I wanted to find the right kind of meditation, because I wanted to seat in the lotus position, because I kept asking if I was doing things right, because of my struggle to stay focused. Now I just focus on my breath and don't mind to practice with some guided meditation, I seat in seiza position that is way more comfortable, and when I find myself wondering if I'm doing right I try to see that as a judgement. I've also understood something about the focus that completely changed my approach to meditation: it is true that the main purpose of meditation is to maintain the attention, but this is NOT THE MOST IMPORTANT THING about meditation! The most important thing is to realize when you are wandering! This helped me accepting my thoughts and instead of becoming frustrated I'm more likely to be proud of myself for being aware of my wanderings. I really wanted to say this because everyone talks about notice your thoughts and GENTLY return to your breath, but almost no one says that noticing your thoughts is the most important part of all the meditation process and that you must be happy when you see them, so it's harder to be gentle! This helped me a lot in my approach. If you've read this far thank you for you attention. I would also like to thank you all for this subreddit, it's nice to read other's experiences because it's motivational and gives a lot of food for thought. I hope I will keep this point of view and that I will succeed in maintaining this beautiful habit. I wish you all the best, Luca

Global Meditation for the Awakening of Human Consciousness

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 10:16 PM PDT

I think that many of you watched a Samadhi film on youtube. It has 2 parts, millions of views and was translated to many languages. For me Samadhi part 1 was eyeopening 2 years ago, even though I already did some meditation at that time. So if you didn't watch that, I will highly suggest you to do so. But this post is not about that, I have just seen that same guys who created film Samadhi, is preparing a global meditation session on April 4th. Mentioning how many watched their films, I think it can really be global. So I decided to share the link with you, hope we can make it big - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OaPxsDsZF0 Check the link and if you are willing to participate on that session, leave a comment. Thank you!

I started meditation every day 478 days ago. One thing that I feel is that time doesn’t seem to go as fast as before I started meditation. The weeks and months seem to go for longer than before. Could this be a coincidence or is there a reason that I’m experiencing this?

    Meditation & Body Dysmorphia

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 06:30 PM PDT

Greetings, I hope all are healthy and safe.

Just wanted to share that I was having a particularly rough day with body dysmorphia today, and I just meditated for 23 minutes and feel immensely better. I'm still feeling really insecure but I'm a lot more willing to just relax and let my guard down for the time being than I was before. Life is good.

What is the most drug-like meditation type to try?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 08:40 PM PDT

I'm not addicted to drugs and have never tried them but some people describe meditation being the best drug ever and saying how it has given them some experiences they will never forget and was wondering if anyone has had a similar encounter or reccomendation. Thx!

One of the most beautiful moments in my life.

    Posted: 02 Apr 2020 03:01 AM PDT

I believe that the universe is guiding me through something really special. Before isolation, i was struggling with drug abuse and i felt i was losing touch with the universe. I prayed to God and asked for spiritual guidance. I decided i had to go sober because due to LSD and stimulant abuse i began to have problems with my heart. I believe this time is being given to me to stay at home with my family and enjoy life in any possible way that i can. I started meditating again and eating healthy. I am now one week clean from everything (including marijuana, nicotine, alcohol, and caffeine) and i decided to delete snapchat and instagram without letting anybody know. I wanted to stay quiet and really try to find myself. I can feel the universe really starting to show me true guidance. I learned i need to use this time to get on my shit and do something with my life. I have been listening to new music, practicing new skills, and learning a lot. I just wanted to say i'm proud of myself and i am thankful for this experience. I am only 16 years old, and this is one of the most beautiful and enlightening periods of my life so far and i am never going to forget this. It has been hard too though, cutting off everyone who i thought were my friends to stay in a sober mindset just to realize they care more about getting high and living life in the broad path. But that's fine by me, im doing this for myself and i'm surrendering to the moment and all i am going to do is ride the wave and enjoy every second of this human experience.

How does a self-guided meditation retreat compare to an organized retreat?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 11:10 PM PDT

So amidst this pandemic I, like a lot of people, find myself in the unexpected situation of likely being off work for at least six weeks, while happily continuing to collect a paycheck. Over the last two years or so, I have established a daily meditation practice, and the idea of attending an organized meditation retreat has become more and more attractive to me, although I wasn't sure when I would find the time. Now I have the time! However, most organized meditation retreats in my area are closed due to the virus and so I'm wondering whether it would be a good idea to try to create a personal retreat. At the end of the day, I suppose all you really need is a place to sit alone and some supplies, right? My only concern is that I am definitely a novice (everything I've learned has been from books or apps like Mindspace and Waking Up). I suppose one of the benefits of an organized retreat is that you would receive guidance on how to deepen your practice, as well as some structure in the day-to-day. What do people around here think about the comparative benefits of an organized retreat vs. a self-guided one, particularly for novices? If I were going to do this, does anyone have advice or tips?

I'm almost done with the third part of Basic. "Basic 3", so to say. What is the path next, that you suggest? I can't quite understand it. Where to now, on the app?

A great reminder from Joseph Goldstein

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 01:59 PM PDT

I was listening to the wonderful Ten Percent Happier podcast this morning (link below) and Joseph Goldstein was on, and he brought something up that I kind of knew but wasn't really doing right (amazing how often I do this regarding meditation); he said that recognition is not the same as mindfulness. So for instance, suddenly being aware that you have anxiety you might think "Ah, I'm feeling anxious right now"; that's hard enough most of the time, and until this morning I would have said that was a moment of mindfulness, but I think he's right that that's just the FIRST step of recognition; the next step in being mindful is to notice how you're relating to the thing you recognized; are you trying to push it away? Or if it's a positive feeling, are you clinging too much to it, etc. Our goal is generally to be able to sit with the emotions that come up and accept their presence, after all.

Then I realized those two steps are also part of another mindfulness technique I'm sure many of you know: RAIN! If you haven't heard of it in the context of meditation, it's Recognize, Accept, Investigate and either Non-identification or Nurture. It's often taught as a helpful technique for moments of strong emotion. To summarize a bit, Recognize is pretty much what I mentioned above, the actual awareness, followed by Accepting or saying "yes" to whatever it is you've noticed (to clarify that doesn't mean you approve of what's there, simply that you're acknowledging and allowing it to be there just as it is). Investigating is harder to describe but I've heard Tara Brach say things like "what's going on in my body and mind?" "Where do I feel the pain?" "What does this want from me?", focusing primarily on the "felt-sense of the body." And Nuture simply refers to having self compassion, remembering that it's okay to experience these feelings.

Anyway as usual, Joseph Goldstein is dropping wisdom bombs with this podcast, I just had to share it since some of these things are so subtle and easy to forget as we try to get better at this meditation stuff!

And just a plug for the whole podcast and everything by Dan Harris, since he's the one who got me back into meditation, he rocks!

Meditation has started to feel like a chore lately

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 04:53 PM PDT

Normally I meditate every night before going to sleep and every day I look forward to the days meditation session. However, during the last couple of weeks I've started to notice that it has gotten really hard for me to get myself to do it. Like I would go to bed, ready to meditate, but then decide to go straight to sleep or just be on my phone and browse reddit.. and when I do finally meditate, I catch myself wishing that the session was already over. It's been really hard to focus on it lately. I absolutely love meditating but for some reason I just can't get myself to do it. I know this is just a temporary issue and that I will get back into it again soon. I was just wondering if any of you guys ever have these kind of feelings and if you had any advice to share with me.

I tried meditation for 30 days but dont feel a difference? Am i doing it wrong?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 06:47 PM PDT

I know its a silly question. What ive read so far there isnt really a "right" way. Just breath and be in the moment.

I tried it for a month and 10 minutes each session (maybe thats too short ,i dont know)

Im coming to you more experienced folks and ask for an advice. Maybe im doing it wrong or should be more patient. Ive heard about microcosmic circuit breathing while meditating but never tried it.

What would you recommend in that situation?
