Do Yogis clean their floor more often?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 11:42 AM PDT

Doing yoga at home everyday has awakened me to the startling state of my floor. So much hair! So many footprints! One of many realizations yoga has led me to. Hope this gave you a laugh. Namaskar yogis.

    Yoga Rookie Asking for Advice

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 07:38 PM PDT

I started practicing yoga just a few weeks ago. I really like it and I want to make it a part of my daily routine for life, basically. However, I am TERRIBLE at being flexible, I have no balance whatsoever (i.e. I fell when I tried the warrior pose for the first time), I am not active at all (never been to gym in my life more than two consecutive weeks) and I have no strength in my body to even try most of the poses. I am a twenty six years-old skinny, sad, little couch potato of an old lady trapped in the body of a younger woman. (Oh, also, I am a PhD student in humanities, so nothing I do requires any physical activity).

So, my question is, what is the best way to fix myself? I want to gain strength, balance, and flexibility in the long run. With yoga, I started doing some cardio exercises (20-30 mins a day), some HIIT routines (nothing that exceeds 10 minutes though--and I can't do any burpees or planks at this point) along with 40-50 mins yoga every day. Do you think this combination is enough for me to improve fast enough so that I can stop feeling like a lump in a few months??? Any other suggestions?

    Thanks & stay healthy, everyone!

My feet can only be on tiptoe, It is ok?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 01:46 PM PDT

Hi. I am a beginner in yoga. I want to make a specific query: In some postures my feet can only be on tiptoe and not completely on the floor, like the dog pose. Is this okay at first? How do I get my feet to the floor in these positions?

Looking to connect with an instructor to help me grow during COVID19

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 08:35 PM PDT

I've been an athletic person my whole child/young adulthood but after going to college I lost a connection to my body. I gained some weight but mostly lost muscle. Over the past six months I began to dabble in Yoga with Adriene's videos and after a few weeks in quarantine it became a daily routine. I've since become enamored with practicing and pushing myself. I've found myself emotional on the mat, tearful but also powerful. In a month I've seen noticeable shifts in my body. I haven't lost weight but I've gained so much strength. I've been working on the headstand... but I'm afraid to continue with only free YouTube videos as my resource. I want to actually set a foundation for myself to build up to tough poses and challenges and I doubt my ability to do so just with adriene's free videos. I looked in here and saw some posts and I don't think I want to subscribe to her paid channel. I want something faster I think? And more challenging. I don't know the terms but I am hoping to learn!

I have the ability to settle a reasonable price with an instructor and I think it would be really nice to support someone while they support me... I came to this page to learn and realized free online class isn't going to cut it. I want to begin the right way, while applying social distancing/isolation. And tips for finding a dedicated instructor worth paying for zoom lessons?

Are shoulder stands safe for your neck?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 04:08 PM PDT

I have an inverted curve in my neck that I've been seeing a chiropractor for. When she found out I did yoga regularly, she asked if I did shoulder stands, and said half her business is fixing necks of people who do shoulder stands!

Any experienced yogi or yoga teacher know more about this? Is it that people are doing the pose unsafely?

Putting the weights down for 30 days of yoga?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 12:35 PM PDT

I've been lightly practicing yoga in between workout/cardio days for several months now and I'm curious about laying off weight training in lieu of a yoga heavy 30 day run. I'd keep a few calisthenics morning routines and running/jump rope in the regiment but would mainly focus on yoga. I guess my question is what can I expect in 30 days? Will I lose a lot of muscle mass? Will it be like starting over from day one when I pick up weights again? I've worked really hard for the muscle mass I have now but I think stretching what I've got would allow me to further gain and build more-if that makes sense?

Thoughts? Experience? If this is a silly question all I ask is be nice about it.

Does anyone else have real trouble with seated forward bends?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 10:21 AM PDT

When I do a seated forward bend, I can't get past 90 degrees. When my legs are spread, it's even harder. All of the stretching seems to be in the hamstrings.

Need some help from you amazing zen people

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 12:29 PM PDT

I have a problem with overthinking, catching myself thinking about the past and the future. Sometimes negative thoughts fill my head , I think bad things will happen to me and it prevents me from living my life to the fullest. I just want to be happy and be able to sit with my thoughts instead of running from them :( how can I practice mindfulness so I can be in the present moment ? What exactly should I do everytime these negative thoughts enter my head?

    Headstand injury

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 12:16 PM PDT

I tried doing a headstand the other day and felt a tiny bit of pain on the left side of upper neck, I suspect I put a lot of weight on my head. It's been a week and a half and the pain sometimes travels from the left to the right side of my neck and my head feels numb on the lower left side. I normally would've gone to my PT but due to covid-19 (it's serious where I live) I can't go and he hasn't replied my texts...

Has anyone experienced this before that can recommend stretches or something? I tried doing stretches my PT recommended for mild whiplash but they seem to worsen the pain. Thank you... I'm currently using heat therapy and antiinflamatories.

Any teachers find great headset mics for livestream classes?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 03:29 PM PDT

I'm teaching on zoom these days, but there are two construction sites on either side of my home (today a house got torn down during my class) - so sound has been a challenge.

My preference is for a headset mic wih a pack. And not purchased through Amazon.

    Any thoughts? Thank you !
