The unexpected benefits of stretching Posted: 05 May 2020 12:29 AM PDT During lockdown I made it a goal of mine to get my front splits. It's been about 2 months and I'm not there yet but I've made huge progress. You may all know this, I didn't, but after about a month of stretching I noticed I hadn't gotten my usual lower back pain that I have had for about a year or 2 now! This was such a pick-me-up when I was feeling down during lockdown. Also, I have had shin splints for about 3 years now due to a basketball injury and I accepted the fact that I would never run again. Then, on a walk last week I got bored and jogged a bit. I kept waiting for the tenderness to start or the sharp stabbing pain, but it never came! I've downloaded Couch 2 5k to practice slowly and I'm on day 3 now with no pain. I'm blown away and couldnt be happier! I didnt realise when going into this journey how amazing I would feel because of it. [link] [comments]

Concerns about chest tightness when deep stretching shoulders/in bridge Posted: 04 May 2020 02:40 PM PDT Hi all, I stretch to ameliorate back and shoulder pain from a sedentary office job. I'm no professional but I love the pain relief I feel when I deep stretch my shoulders. My concern is that I feel chest tightness (and get anxious about having trouble breathing) when I arch my upper back for a deep shoulder stretch/chest opener. It feels like pressure restricting my lower ribcage from expanding on an inhale. I'm unsure whether I should lean into the pressure (because the tightness will be reduced with more stretching) or try to reduce the tightness by adjusting my stretch. Is it common to have a tightness of breath feeling when stretching upper back? Does this pressure mean I've hit my range of motion for my middle back/lower ribcage? Is it an indication that I am performing the stretch incorrectly? Any advice would be welcome! Thank you, and be well. Edit: thought it might be helpful to clarify that while I've described the sensation as trouble breathing, I can still take shallow breaths. [link] [comments]
