I just finished Yoga with Adriene’s 30 day challenge!

    Posted: 06 May 2020 04:14 PM PDT

Sorry if this isn't allowed. I'm just really excited. I have never practiced yoga before but my fiancé and I thought it would be good to do together to support our fitness and mental health while we're working from home during quarantine. It took a little longer than I would have wanted (6 weeks as opposed to 4), but I finished it!!! I had no idea the last day of practice was just doing your own flow. And I completely nailed it. The time flew by and I felt so peaceful and strong.

Thanks to everyone here for being so inspiring, I love seeing everyone's posts :) I'm so excited to continue my practice.

    [COMP] Forearm headstand feedback

    Posted: 06 May 2020 07:05 PM PDT

Apologies for the bad quality photo.

I started my weekly yoga practice in January and have increased it to 3 times a week since quarantine began almost two months ago. I've been working on forearm headstand for a few weeks now and can get up to it 4/5 times now. However, most of the time my feet don't stack directly above my head (they're usually forward with slight bend at the hips) and I feel like I have banana back. Whenever I try to tuck my pelvis, my feet move back and I flip onto my back.

Any thoughts on what's weak and I need to work on? Would love to progress to tripod and forearm stand in the next few weeks so any feedback and tips would be appreciated. Thank you!

“Head over heart; heart over pelvis”

    Posted: 06 May 2020 10:14 AM PDT

I'm a complete beginner and I've been doing Yoga With Adriene the past couple of days. She always mentions this "head over heart; heart over pelvis" and I don't really understand it? I figured I might understand once I got into yoga more and more but I'm super curious already lol. Is there any video where she explained it? Or can anyone explain it? Thank you!

Edit: Thank you all for the responses! It all makes sense now 😅 Namaste 🙏🏻

Why does yoga nidra guided meditation mention negative things?

    Posted: 06 May 2020 07:50 PM PDT

I have been doing some guided yoga nidra meditations on insight timer and they almost always mention some negative thing like having me imagine shame and feel it in my body as part of the practice. What purpose does this serve? It feels like it's manipulating my emotions... which would be ok with me if it were in a positive direction.

How many of you are completely self-taught?

    Posted: 06 May 2020 06:46 AM PDT

I've recently been getting into yoga but really only doing simple workouts and poses because I am not in any kind of shape to be doing some of the crazy hard poses I see on here! I'm just wondering if it is feasible to get to that point completely on your own? Just through internet research and YouTube video stuff, maybe even buying a few books, idk?

Also, to those of you who have reached that mastery level, do you incorporate other types of exercise with your yoga (i.e. resistance training, cardio, etc?)

Any tips to recommend for practicing yoga on your own is greatly appreciated! Thanks guys

Edit: don't want this to sound like I'm expecting to master yoga within a year or something, I know many of you have been practicing for several years and it is a HUGE process to get to that point! Just looking for some good advice and starter tips :)

    Yoga after c-section

    Posted: 06 May 2020 07:28 PM PDT

I had an uncomplicated c-section mid February. I've started feeling up to restarting gentle yoga and always planned to go back to my regular studio. Things being closed due to covid, I'm planning to do what I can at home.

Anyone have any advice on what to do or avoid after c-section surgery? Or if someone has experience from their own studio/teachers and wouldn't mind sharing I'd love to hear from you.

    Help with stepping through

    Posted: 06 May 2020 03:27 PM PDT

Hello! So I am pretty new to yoga, only been practicing for about 2-3 months. I have been feeling better already with many poses but something I still struggle with is how to step through all the way from either downward facing dog into a crescent lunge for example . I always have to step out of the pose or really adjust my foot so it is more forward. Looking for any advice or things can help improve this !

How do some people move so quickly in between poses?

    Posted: 06 May 2020 02:10 PM PDT

I was just watching some of Alo Yoga's videos on youtube (this one, to be precise: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsScsDIjx-4&list=PLc0asrzrjtZLuuiyhpKYnPsxKIQYInE37&index=5&t=3s)

and I had to stop because I couldn't keep up. He was moving so quickly, and I've noticed this with other more advanced practices as well. My question is, how do you move so quickly in between poses while still being able to breathe? I like to take deep inhales and exhales and slow transitions, but when the pace picks up I just feel like I'm panting. Is this just something that gets better with practice?

    Brand new to yoga!

    Posted: 06 May 2020 07:46 AM PDT

I just started doing yoga yesterday and spent the night browsing this sub. With all the gyms closed I was searching for something to stay active that didn't involve running and found Yoga with Adriene on YouTube. I bought a mat and now here I am 2 days and 3 practices down!

With no studio to go to however I am worried I am be doing the poses incorrectly how do I know if I'm doing a down dog or warrior 1/2 correctly. I definitely feel a pull in my muscles but was just looking for some tips since I'm on my own for now.

Should I still practice with a sore back?

    Posted: 06 May 2020 07:02 AM PDT

    Hi all!

I've been practicing yoga every day for over 2 months now. It's been really instrumental to me during a crazy time in my life, and I'm so grateful for it.

However, this week I'm experiencing some pain in my back, around my ribs, that I think may be a result of my practice. It's quite uncomfortable, though it's not to the extent that it's really limiting my range of motion.

I'm sure it's normal to get a little soreness after practicing; after all, it is exercise. But should I take a break untill the soreness goes away? Keep practicing as usual? Do something restorative? It's the 3rd day I've had this discomfort and I'm not sure if practicing is doing me more harm than good in this state.

    Thanks in advance!

    Mother’s Day?

    Posted: 06 May 2020 11:51 AM PDT

As per usual, the son and hubby have left Mother's Day to the last minute - shocking. "We don't know what you want" - so I'm pondering. Thought maybe something to enhance my practice - a wheel? Something I've not thought of? Thanks all

Who created those realms of existence?

    Posted: 06 May 2020 08:43 AM PDT

Yogis believe that God created everything that exists in the universe. And Spirit created God and both of them are not humans but pure energy/matter/light or what have you.

My question is: Who designed or created, so to speak, all those different levels of existence like the conscious world, astral world, etc and the absolute cycles of rebirth or reincarnation determined by karma.

All the above does really sound like something created by a human-being who has brains and can think and create.

Please don't laugh at me. Thanks.

    Calcification Top of Feet

    Posted: 06 May 2020 11:44 AM PDT

Hello Everyone, I'm pretty much a newbie, I only started in January doing Vinyasa, Yin and Nidra at a studio. During one of the classes we did Hero pose and I was dying of pain in the tops of my feet so that my teacher told me to keep that pain in mind and do that pose at home during the week. She spoke about how Hero pose prevents the calcification at the tops of our feet.

Again, I'm new, I didn't want to doubt her but is this true ? What causes calcification in young/healthy people?

    Thank y'all in advance :)

Just finished my first yoga session! (WIN!!!)

    Posted: 05 May 2020 11:41 PM PDT

    And I feel FANTASTIC!

I've had a lot of health issues and I've really let my muscles get very weak. I've had an interest in yoga since I was younger, especially since I've never been flexible. Finally decided to take it up and followed a tutorial on Amazon Prime, and I feel great! Just feeling grounded, peaceful, and just great. I really hope I can keep this up and make it a routine. Tonight was wonderful.
