Need more strength to push up into wheel.

    Posted: 13 May 2020 02:44 PM PDT

I can get into wheel pose if I bend backwars about 3 feet from a wall and push against the wall for support, then kinda drop at the end. So I know I have the back flexibility. But when I try to push up into wheel i can barely get my head off the ground. After trying and trying my wrists burn like I have carpal tunnel.
What exercises can I do to strengthen the needed muscles while not straining my tendons?

    Daily readings?

    Posted: 13 May 2020 11:07 AM PDT

    Hi!

I'm looking for a physical book that I can sit down with and read about a page from every day that focuses on yoga/mindfulness/meditation before I start my practice.

So far I have looked into Meditations from the Mat and Yoga 365, and I'm not 100% sold on either.

Do you have a daily reading you enjoy, or have you had a positive (or negative) experience with one of those books?

    I would love suggestions!

For context, I've gone through a 200-hour teacher training that ended in December.

Edit: I have read the sutras

Recommendations for leggings that don’t budge while I flow

    Posted: 13 May 2020 02:11 PM PDT

I've been trying different brands of leggings to wear during my yoga practice. It seems they all either roll down or ride up no matter what I do!

I've tried UniQlo, various brands from TJ Maxx, LuLu...I'm willing to spend money if they are great!

*Other considerations: I usually do vinyasa, hot, and/or yin styles depending on day and mood about 5-6 days a week. I'm only 5 feet tall and generally a small of medium depending on compression and length.

    "Goal" Pose

    Posted: 13 May 2020 07:27 PM PDT

Just curious, when you all started yoga, what was that one pose you really wanted to be able to master?

For example, I've been doing yoga for about 8 months now and my goal post currently is crow! I've pretty close, but it's something I'm actively working towards.

Tips to improve ankle mobility? (I can't do malasana!)

    Posted: 13 May 2020 06:40 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I have old ankle injuries that have affected my ankle mobility. I can do happy baby pose easily, but I can't do malasana. I think it has to do with my ankle mobility. I'm a beginner as well. Any tips or tricks? Thanks :)

Anyone have a favourite core based routine?

    Posted: 13 May 2020 08:45 AM PDT

There are so many videos out there I was just wondering about some favourites people have. I have some hip/low back routines that I love, just wanted to add a core oriented one to my rotation. Been working more on my inversions during the pandemic, I find them so relaxing!

    Plateauing?

    Posted: 13 May 2020 06:12 PM PDT

So I've been consistently doing asanas that focus on opening up the hip flexors longer than the shutdown has been going on and my knees don't seem to be getting any closer to the ground whilst doing baddhakonasana (which, from what I understand, is an indicator of how safe it is to perform padmasana, which is my overall present goal). Also, I've suddenly become sore in my hamstrings and hip flexor areas. Am I doing something wrong? How can I continue to make progress?

Difference free and paid version of Down Dog app?

    Posted: 13 May 2020 11:52 AM PDT

The Down Dog app is free until the 1st of June and I never used the free version before. I have no idea how the free version will be.

The only exercises I'm doing currently are the beginner/intermediate and changes I make in the time of Savasana and practice.

    Handsfree hamstring stretching poses?

    Posted: 13 May 2020 10:10 AM PDT

I have a ganglion cyst on my wrist and whenever I put pressure on it it hurts like a b.... I've had sensitive wrists to begin with (apparently a family issue) but not it's basically impossible to put weight on them. I'm getting the cyst removed at the end of the month, which will as a few weeks to not putting pressure on it.

Now my hamstrings are definitely my weakness and the part of my body that needs the most stretching. Poses like downward dog, three legged dog etc are not possible right now, so I'm looking for other poses to stretch them. Any recommendations?

Ps. I searched the sub but I couldn't find anything regarding handsfree poses.

What is the original purpose of Yoga?

    Posted: 13 May 2020 10:07 AM PDT

I have been practising Buddhism for a few years and now I am starting to get into the philosophy of Yoga. From my understanding, Buddhism's main goal is to be free from suffering by overcoming desire, aversion and ignorance through the four noble truths and the eight-fold noble path. What is the main goal in Yoga and through which means can one accomplish that goal?

I am asking specifically from the early historical standpoint, not so much from the more modern adaptations of Yoga. Thanks!

Edit: Thank you for the information! Very interesting to see the importance that Yoga gives to the Self. In Buddhism there is the doctrine of No-Self, but I have found that in the Mahayana tradition many schools posit non-duality as the ultimate truth, which is very similar to the idea in Advaita of Atman = Brahman.
