[COMP] Starting to gain the strength & courage to try new poses, my first side plank split!

One of my favorite things is when you feel a pose differently....Same cat cow or same down dog, but it just feels deeper, stronger, and better.. Does this ever happen to you?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 08:06 AM PDT

I'm still really new to my practice, but some days I just feel the pose differently - like it really touches the soul or connects me to the ground in an almost spiritual way. And truthfully, that's why I keep coming back to the mat. The same ole' poses but there's something about every practice that is new. And it feels like I'm progressing? Slowly but surely, my body just keeps getting stronger and I feel the things my online instructors are always talking about... It just feels good.

I hope this even makes sense? I think a good example is downward facing dog and planks... I watch a lot of Yoga with Adriene and she talks about pressing into your fingertips and drawing your strength from that. And then just the other day I was breathing through plank and down dog and I felt it. The weight was in my fingers rather than in my wrists. And that little shift that I'm not sure how I made happen, really just changed the mood of my whole practice. I felt so accomplished and lighter, but also more grounded?

I'd love to hear what little shifts/improvements/moments you all have had... :)

    Vinyasa Teachers: Breath Cues

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 04:38 PM PDT

I'm curious how other vinyasa flow teachers use breath cues. Personally, I don't cue any transitions (into poses or variations within a pose) without linking it to the breath. (I.e. during a flow I would say: Inhale to warrior two, exhale to extended side angle, inhale to rise to warrior two; or during longer holds I might say inhale arms above the head, exhale into seated forward fold.) So each cue for me is (1) breath; (2) action. I think this helps students (and myself as a teacher) really integrate body, mind, and breath.

But I've noticed some teachers don't do this, only giving sporadic breath cues which allows for a little more freedom in the timing of the flow.

Curious what others do and why - Thanks!

Yoga to the People Ceases All Operations Amid Sexual Assault Allegations

Popular yoga studio chain in the Bay Area closes amid allegations of sexual assault, discrimination — SF Gate. ______________________________________________My heart breaks as more light gets shed. As a former teacher/student I hope that breaking the silence can result in some justice.

Recommendations what type of yoga to do?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 02:26 PM PDT

I am wanting to start doing yoga and not sure where to start. My considerations are a few: I want to be more flexible and healthy, I am very open to the spiritual side of yoga, and I've previously had back pain (l4-l5 and l5-S1 bulges that caused pain which has mostly healed now). Also I live a little north of Tampa Florida when it comes to consideration for "what is actually available in my area" that I can learn. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I found something on YouTube called "Arkaya yoga" by Yogacharini Maitreyi but I'm a litttle skeptical of the trend for everyone to brand their own system of yoga.

Can I gain muscle while doing yoga?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 01:53 PM PDT

Is there any form of yoga that will help me gain muscle? I'm not very comfortable going back to the gym to do weight lifting due to the current pandemic?

    Yoga begginer

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 08:36 AM PDT

I spend a lot of time on the computer so i decided to start doing yoga. I do a 30 minute routine in the morning and evening and stretch every few hours after sitting a lot. Is that good? Should i not stretch that much? (around 3 times + 2x 30min routines)

    Weird feeling in right knee

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 07:08 PM PDT

You know how in hip opening poses (like pigeon), instructors always say to flex the foot to protect the knee? Well, lo and behold, I was trying to get into one-legged king pigeon before I supposed I was ready to, and since that day, my knee has been feeling off. There's no pain, but occasionally when I get into pigeon with my right knee in front/bent, or do things like figure four, I will feel a slight twinge on the outside of the knee.

Does anyone have any advice for this? I haven't been strenuous on the knee since then, but I wonder if I should take time completely off yoga (which I really, really, don't want to do), but I believe that things like this in my experience take a long, long time, to feel completely back to normal again, even if they're not even very painful to begin with.

I would love any advice that anyone might have!

SoCal yoga class during COVID-19. Mask & gloves required. Admittedly risky and self-destructive to go at all, it seemed responsible enough under the circumstances (14 student class limit, but 3 people total in the building today: teacher, desk clerk & myself). I feel like I should have left a tip.

[COMP] I found out that I can transition into a tripod headstand after my crow face plants - just practicing to keep this steady for a minute. I can lift up my legs without touching the wall but doing it without the wall seems to be a mental barrier.

    Large size mats?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 02:17 PM PDT

    Hey /r/yoga,

I'm a super tall yogi, measuring in at 6'7" (201cm) and in need of a new yoga mat. Does anyone know of a good supplier of extra long yoga mats?

Who here has chronic neck pain? What are your tips/modifications/go-to videos?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 07:50 AM PDT

So I struggle with a lot of sub-occipital neck pain that tends to flare up whenever I "engage my neck when I should be engaging my back and shoulders" (per my physical therapist). I never notice it in the moment- I only find out the next morning when I wake up feeling like I've been hit by a truck 😩

In the past year I noticed that I kept hurting myself after practice (Baptiste style power yoga). This is what I've learned for myself, but I'm curious if anybody else has opinions or better ideas:

    • NO shoulder stand
    • NO handstands/headstands... not worth it
    • Keep shoulders down always
    • NO turning your head if not necessary. Avoid "looking up" or "looking towards where your body wants you to go"- especially when the upper body is engaged.
    • DO NOT tilt your head up during up dog
    • No "floating up or back" to up/down dog
    • Try to avoid fish pose
    • No tilting your head back during camel
    • A piece of tape across the back of the neck helps maintain awareness of neck alignment

    Unlimited Spirit

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 12:15 PM PDT

    Hello fellow yogis!

I'm new here and hope to someday post some of my poses. I'm a self-taught yogi and I've been practicing for over 2 years now. I just wanted to share a recent discovery with you all. In my late sessions, I've had this feeling of being more connected with my spirit, and through that connection I feel the limitations of my physical body dissipate. I feel light as a feather and move through the poses with ease. Even the crow pose. Any of you ever experience something like this?

    Help with Bridge pose please

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 11:34 AM PDT

Hi Yogis and Yoginis. I'm looking for a little help...

I've been doing yoga on a casual basis for about 20 years now, and just practice at home with the Down Dog app (due to Covid and my location). I'm generally pretty happy with my progress, however in Bridge pose I'm really struggling!

I can't arch my back, it feels totally straight/flat, and I can't get my arms to straighten, even though I can do ring dips (body weight training) without difficulty.

I guess its more than lack of back flexibility and arm strength... I'm guessing deficient glute/hamstring strength too?

Any advice on exercises to build my Bridge (pun intended!)

    Many thanks in advance :)

P.s. for context, I'm a 43 yo male, 185cm, 70kg. Relatively strong and healthy. Pretty tight hamstrings, like many guys...

Blood rushing to head in e.g. down dog

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 10:21 AM PDT

    Hello,

When in e.g. down dog my head turns super red and you can even see a vein along my forehead. I don't feel dizzy and I tried breathing differently but can't help it. I always had this blood rush to my head when doing a handstand too.

Is this normal or an issue?

    Kum Nye: Tibetan Meditative Yoga

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 03:37 AM PDT

I've been practicing Kum Nye for over 10 years, and have been back to teaching it recently. I'm wondering if anyone else here practices, and if there are other forums or resources people are using.

I do the yoga of Tarthang Tulku, and I'm happy to share and learn with new people!
