[COMP] Fallen star during Zoom yoga with my favorite instructor

Did a 10 minute beginners yoga video for the first time today.

I think humbling is the nicest thing I can say about what that experience was for me.

Small victories. I did a headstand for the first time yesterday!

    Posted: 07 May 2020 01:32 PM PDT

Like many, I've been doing yoga at home via YouTube videos. I was feeling good after my 45 minute session and wanted to play around a bit. So, I scooted my mat up to the wall and got into dolphin pose with my fingers interlaced against my head. It took a few tries to get my legs in the air, but I managed to do it! I did it three times just because it felt so good! I don't think my hands were in the right position as my head kept rolling on top of my ring and pinky fingers. But, regardless, I did it without hurting myself or breaking anything!

Any tips that y'all could offer?

    Yoga mat woes

    Posted: 07 May 2020 02:18 PM PDT

Hi guys, I have a question for yogis who travel a lot. I love to camp and plan on doing lots of backpacking once we're allowed to again, but I have a concern about my yoga mat weighing me down. I've been trying to practice minimizing my possessions and it seems wild to me to buy a "travel" yoga mat for around $60. Also, I've developed a sort of connection with my mat, it really supports me. My problem is that it's just so heavy!

I've also been considering using it as a sleeping mat while camping to try to dual-purpose it or something.

Yoga is a huge part of my daily life and I tend to fall out of it when I am travelling. And everytime I come back to a regular practice, I question why I ever stopped in the first place.

So I'm wondering how to you practice yoga during your travels where you don't have access to a studio with mats? Do you just use a towel? Would you power through it and carry the heavy mat? Or is it worth it to pick up a lighter mat?

    Thanks in advance 💞

    Breathing out my ears

    Posted: 07 May 2020 04:11 PM PDT

Ok so I'm a noob to yoga. I'm struggling with breathing. I can never get a deep breath while in a pose. Feels like my diaphragm's pushing up on my lungs. Is that normal? Are there any tips anyone can give me with regards to this. Also, I'm guessing you can breathe in between the breath in and the breath out for the poses?

Day 30 of 30 Days of Yoga with Adriene, on my birthday!

    Posted: 07 May 2020 12:40 AM PDT

I don't exactly know when I started the Journey but I know that couldn't do it on some days, and at the end it led to the last day to be on my birthday~ I just finished the flow and I feel so happy for this coincidence! doing the 30 days of yoga was one of my new year resolutions so really good start for my day. I don't usually care about my birthdays but because of this occasion, it feels more special :~)

I hope there are many more 30 days waiting for me and yoga :~)

Yoga mats are so expensive, is it worth it?

    Posted: 07 May 2020 12:20 PM PDT

    Hi,

I am retiring my yoga mat which has been in use for like 6 years now. I am very attached to this one, and today I realized it needs to go!

I am not sure what to buy---i am looking for something with adequate cushion for my knees, etc.

The ones with more cushion are so expensive, I am not sure if it is "worth" $80+. Why is it so expensive? Is it worth buying at this price point? How are these expensive mats different from the cheaper ones you can get elsewhere?

Yoga posts make me feel bad

    Posted: 07 May 2020 05:18 PM PDT

All the hot, skinny, gorgeous models on IG make me feel terrible. I'm pretty good at yoga, and not the worst looking human, but I feel like I'll never be anything when I look at them. What's the point in my practice? :(

Why can't I breathe through my nose when headstand?

    Posted: 07 May 2020 10:21 AM PDT

I just started doing headstands, but I can't breathe through my nose at that pose, is it a beginner thing or am I doing something wrong?

Is becoming a part time teacher worth it for the social and physical benefits?

    Posted: 07 May 2020 07:31 AM PDT

    Hey everybody!

I just stumbled onto this community and have enjoyed reading a lot of the top posts after searching for things related to my question, but I wouldn't mind some advice from people with real experience, especially now that covid has hit.

I am not obsessed with yoga; I am a person who really wants to do a lot more of it. A few years ago, when I was in college, I did hot yoga every day for about a year and a half. I loved it, and even did trade shifts at the studio. It changed my life and I loved how it made me feel.

Then I moved, fell off, got out of shape. To start this year though, I was on a roll. I did 25 classes in January and another 10 in February because I had to travel more. Then covid hit, and my back hurts again.

I'm the type of person who likes to make their hobbies a big part of their life, and if they can make money then hey that's cool too. I like to commit to big goals.

I understand that becoming a yoga teacher is difficult, doesn't pay that awesome for a lot of people, and the market is flooded. But I have a creative job with extreme flexibility in my hours and no office to meet people at, and I want to make my health and body a top priority going forward. I'd be happy teaching just a few classes a week, meeting people in the yoga community to make friends as I move to a new city, and making enough money to make it feel like I had a side hustle, or something like that haha.

I've begun thinking about scaling the mountain of becoming a yoga teacher so that when all this virus stuff is over, I can keep going to class like I was for a few months and then maybe give teacher training a shot. Is this a silly expectation or goal? Am I being unrealistic in making something like this happen? It's a big, long term goal, but if I could make it happen I think it would mean a lot to me. I just want to hear from some people with real experience if I should really go for it.

Sorry for the long post and thank you for any advice!

Healing from a broken arm and feeling a blockage.

    Posted: 07 May 2020 01:07 PM PDT

It's been almost 2 years since I broke my arm (compound fractures of the radius and ulna, as well as a broken elbow and ring finger.) I'm still working on gaining range on my elbow and have been slowly getting back into yoga again. I have been cleared by ortho and PT to do so. When I have been practicing I'm feeling this blockage in my forearm, just my forearm not my hand. It feels dead almost and isn't getting benefit from my practice. It don't have any tendon or ligament damage in my arm,

So I have two questions for my fellow yogis... 1) Any advice for getting back into after an injury?
    2) Is there anything I can do to unblock this feeling in my forearm?

Yoga videos with no bg music?

Can anyone share YouTube yoga videos with no background music, especially Yoga by Kassandra or Adriene? I like to listen to my own music overtop of the videos. Doesn't even need to be minimal cues necessarily

I need help with knee pain.

    Posted: 07 May 2020 08:19 AM PDT

I'm a sprinter and need help with knee pain I've been feeling lately. For the past week every time I try to run or sometimes walk my knees hurt a lot. So I've decided to stop running for a bit and do some stretching to get rid of tension in my legs. The stretching helps temporarily but the pain keeps coming back. Any tips on any stretches I can try that might help would be very appreciated. So far I've just been doing the stuff everyone knows about like pulling my ankle to my glutes but there is probably many stretches I don't know about that can help.

Need help with inner thigh pain

    Posted: 07 May 2020 07:04 AM PDT

Yesterday I broke out my old skateboard to try and teach my 4 year old son to ride it. (I haven't used it in 10 years) I showed him some tricks and we had fun. A few hours later, I'm inside and I try to walk up the stairs and realize I can't lift my left leg high enough to walk up a step. As soon as I lift my left foot about an inch off the floor I get excruciating pain in my thigh. The pain is in my inner, almost rear-inner thigh. The pain spans from a few inches above the knee all the way to a few inches from my groin area. If someone could direct me to video on how to stretch this muscle, I would appreciate it. Or if there would be a better sub for this problem, please let me know. Thank you.

What are your favorite shoulder openers?

    Posted: 06 May 2020 10:01 PM PDT

Looking especially for some less commonly taught ones I may not have heard of. Some I incorporate now are:

    Thread the needle

    Eagle

    Cow Face

Prone cactus - I'm not sure if this is the correct name but that's the only way I've seen it referred to

Forward fold with arms in arc behind

What’s your least favorite pose and why?

    Posted: 06 May 2020 11:31 PM PDT

My two least favorite poses are dancer and runner's lunge.

Dancer- First, I can't get my hand to my inner foot; I have to grasp the outside of my foot instead. When I do this, I don't think I'm getting the full dancer benefits in the arm and upper back. Any suggestions how I can improve this pose and get maximum benefits?

Runner's lunge- No, just no. I can't bring my hands down on both sides of my leg in this position. Also, this whole position is just painful all over. Any thoughts?
