[COMP] The owner of the studio I teach at asked me to send a selfie depicting my “home quarantine life” for a social media post - so I decided to show off the space where I practice AND work from home! Just ‘dancing’ my way through quarantine :)

Is 30 days with Adriene the right place to start?

    Posted: 07 May 2020 11:52 PM PDT

I've been wanting to incorporate a regular yoga practice to my routine. I have dabbled a bit with yoga in the past but for all intents and purposes, I am a beginner.

I have been meditating for over 5 years and that has had a profound impact on my life. Through yoga, I am hoping to find something that can build upon my meditation practice but also push me physically as a form of exercise. It sounds like a solid Vinyasa practice may be a good fit.

I am looking for resources to get started during the lockdown. I've heard a bunch about 30 days with Adriene -- is that the right place to start? If not, are there any other recommendations you would have?

    Much appreciated in advance!

Advice for an intermediate yoga-doer? Seeing improved strength, flexibility, and balance, and am now looking for advice on how to transition to advanced poses.

    Posted: 08 May 2020 05:14 PM PDT

I've been doing yoga for about 10-15 years now (mostly vinyasa) and, as much as I enjoy my practice, I'm really ready to start challenging myself on more advanced poses. I'm pretty athletic and enjoy the balance between mindfulness and physical activity that yoga provides.

I've started with focusing on my form in crow pose and working on controlled transitions into head stands. There are some great resources on maintinting proper form in the FAQs/wiki, but I'm looking for recommendations (YouTube videos, poses, etc) to help transition into more challenging poses. Thanks!

The kid can touch her toes!

    Posted: 08 May 2020 04:56 AM PDT

I posted several months ago about how my kid couldn't touch her toes. Well, today she did it for the first time. I'm so proud of her for not giving up.

And now I've got a response for her whenever she says "I can't do it!" Maybe not right now, but keep at it.

Attempted a headstand and had blurry vision for a brief period, any reasons as to why?

    Posted: 08 May 2020 07:53 PM PDT

attempted to perform a headstand and immediately landed back on my feet and stood up but for a brief 4 second period my vision faded and it wasn't exactly black, I could see some lights from the room, but it was oddly colored. Could this be from standing up to fast ?

Is it normal if my body is suddenly really... loud? (not while actually doing yoga)

    Posted: 08 May 2020 10:19 AM PDT

I used to do yoga very occasionally at a very beginner level, and I've been doing it more during lockdown. For the past couple weeks I've been doing one of the 30 Day Adriene challenges, sometimes with a little extra practice of one pose I'm working on at the end.

Nothing hurts and I'm getting stronger, but I've noticed that my body makes a lot of loud cracks and pops all the time. Like I'm sitting at my desk and reach behind me and my shoulder makes a loud noise, or my spine when I bend over, or my hip if I stick my leg to the side.

Should I be alarmed? Is that a normal thing? I don't want to hurt myself by ignoring a bad problem but if it's fine then I'm fine

Feeling frustrated and lost in my practice

    Posted: 08 May 2020 05:35 PM PDT

How do you decide what your focus is for your practice? Do you make your own flows or do you follow videos? What are your yoga goals?

I used to be perfectly content doing various videos, depending on the day. I felt I had balance, progression, and a sense of purpose in what I chose to do throughout the week. Now I feel lost. I'm not sure what changed. But there's so many things I COULD be doing, and anything I do doesn't feel like enough.

In addition to my videos, I decided to focus on a few key poses that I wanted to work up to, but progress has been slow, and I get frustrated at not being able to do something. I wish I had a private instructor! Maybe there's so much I'm doing wrong.

Seeing some of the videos I watch, of these gorgeous yoga instructors doing asanas perfectly and with such grace, flexibility, and speed in their transitions. I feel like I know nothing! I'm a fraud out here.

Any inspiration or advice is appreciated.

(24M) Hi there everyone! I've been working on getting in shape, I have made great strides to improve my physique but I have noticed that I have very limited mobility when bending and stretching. I'm having trouble doing wide-legged seated forward fold?

    Posted: 08 May 2020 08:44 AM PDT

I have decent flexibility. I have no problem with normal forward fold, or even bending over when my feet are together.

For some reason I can't seem to edge myself forward when doing wide-legged.

I feel like gravity doesn't want to push me down into it.

I've just asked my boyfriend to give me a push and I was able to go quite deep, but what's stopping me being able to get into this pose initially?

I really have to pull at my feet to help bend forward, though I know this is probably not what I'm supposed to do!

    Any advice? Thanks!

    Headaches from shoulder stretching?

    Posted: 08 May 2020 05:01 PM PDT

I feel like I need a good stretch in my shoulders, but when I try to stretch them, my head hurts, and I feel kinda nauseous. It's almost feels like everything is 'scrunched', and there is pressure in my neck when I do them.

Usually I would listen to those ques and not do as deep stretches. In the past, ignoring pain etc means I end up injured or overly sore.

But, if I ignore that and continue with stretching tend to feel good afterwards, relaxed, stretched, and with less pain.

    Any advice?

advice for someone with a big booty...

    Posted: 08 May 2020 04:55 PM PDT

So, I'm finishing up my second week of my own 90 day yoga challenge and doing GREAT! My only issue, and it's a big one (haha) is my butt. I have a very deep curve in my lower back and a very round basket ball-like butt. Laying flat on my back in shavasana is impossible without great strain on my lower back. I know it's a super important part of my practice so I'm not sure what to do.

Would it be better to lay with my knees up and my feet flat on the ground (I don't know the word for this) or to place a bolster or blanket under my lower back? Would one be more beneficial that the other?

    Thanks so much!!

Pressing into the tops of your feet

    Posted: 08 May 2020 04:41 PM PDT

Hi all! I am at day 29 of Yoga Camp by YWA. A common phrase in these videos, depending on the pose, is "press into the tops or your feet".

It seems insignificant, but no matter the pose I can't do that. It makes things really unstable for me sometimes, or in some cases I just don't have the muscle to press into the tops of my feet while holding the rest of my body up.

Are there poses where this is crucial for the safety or accuracy of the pose? Or is there a way I can work on this?

    Thank you everyone! Stay safe.

    Bad knee pain

    Posted: 08 May 2020 04:40 PM PDT

    Hey all,

So I started getting into yoga during the quarantine and managed to do it for about 30 minutes everyday for a month (following random Sarah Beth videos on YouTube)

It's been incredible and I've definitely noticed improvement in my mobility. However I've also noticed a growing pain in the tendons on the bottom of my right knee. This started out not too bad but has grown to be pretty sensitive and is definitely holding me back.

I was wondering if this type of thing is normal.

I do have outrageously tight hamstrings so I have to keep a pretty deep bend in my knees to even be able to do certain movements like forward fold or ragdoll.

I've noticed the pain isn't as intense or is gone completely when I do these hamstring stretches with my knees locked (though then I don't get nearly as deep).

Just wondering if this is normal or if y'all have had similar experiences and how you overcame it.

    Intense shoulder pain during garudasana

    Posted: 08 May 2020 03:42 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I'm just on the hunt for ideas on alternatives for garudasana arms as when my right arm is on top I have very intense pain in my right shoulder (left arm is touchy, but doable). Additionally, any insight to how I might loosen up the area enough to get back to garudasana would be very welcome.

As background, I have had issues in the past with pinching the ligament that runs through your shoulder due to inflammation caused by a lot of moving to tadasana (and I've been doing at least 2 yoga classes every day since quarantine closed gyms). I have never had this particular issue with garudasana previously. In fact, arm binds have usually been one of the easier parts of yoga for me (balancing out my extremely inflexible hamstrings).

Thanks for the help and have a great day!

Opinion: What do you think about spiritual gurus and ashrams? Cult or beneficial to spiritual/yogic practice?

    Posted: 08 May 2020 10:54 AM PDT

I am not aiming to discredit anyone's belief in gurus or spiritual teachers. This question is simply out of curiosity and to discuss the topic.

Most of my experiences with spiritual teachers have only shown me ego driven leaders and cult-like mentalities, so I personally face a moral dilemma when I think about this topic. I love the idea of authentic, traditional teachings and can see the value of a guru-disciple relationship, but have yet to witness any that aren't borderline dangerous.

    What's your perspective?
