    Beginner question mobility vs flexibility

    Posted: 08 Jun 2020 03:13 AM PDT

Hi, I'm 29 and I've never exercises for a better flexibility and / or mobility, in fact I haven't done a lot of physical exercises in my life. But as I'm becoming to be older, and even if I'm not overweighted, I'm sure I'm not in a good shape. So it's time to take care of myself.

In my researches, it seems that there is a distinction between flexibility (ability of a muscle to stretch) and mobility (ability of a joint to move). As I don't see a specific reddit for mobility, is this reddit and the exercices you can find on it are specific for flexibility only or they encompass both? If not, should me advise me where to look to find good exercises for mobility?

    Thanks

Major pain in hips that I can’t identify? Help please.

    Posted: 07 Jun 2020 10:05 PM PDT

I'll do my best to describe my pain. I've isolated movements that trigger severe pain, and I'm unsure of how to move forward.

One way to isolate the movement is while laying down. If I move my legs side to side similar to a snow angel movement (toes toward the ceiling), everything is ok. If I try to rotate my feet outwards against the floor after extending my legs sideways, it triggers sincere pain and the feeling that my hip is genuinely about to crack. If I start out with my feet in basically first position from start to snow angel, if you will, everything feels generally ok.

So, I guess the transition from forward feet to outward facing feet in any type of hip extension creates this unbearable pain, genuine feeling of the possibility of breaking my hip joint.

Is this an unnatural movement and I'm just stupid, or is there something wrong/ something I can work on to fix this issue. It happens randomly in every day life when I'm moving and it causes a lights out moment for me. I have to back up my movements to move out of the posture and compose myself.

    Ankle stretches and flexibility tips

    Posted: 07 Jun 2020 08:01 PM PDT

I have really tight ankles. Since quarantine began, I started yoga again. It's helped a little bit but I still have really tight ankles. I've also been working on my low squats, which seems to have also helped. Are there any other ways I can open up my flexibility?

    Leg stretches hurt lower back

    Posted: 07 Jun 2020 07:42 PM PDT

I'm working on bringing my chest to my knees, so I'm stretching my hamstrings a lot and during the stretch, nothing hurts. After the stretches are done and I bring myself to a "normal" position, my lower back always aches. Is this normal?

    Stretching for a dislocated shoulder?

    Posted: 07 Jun 2020 02:15 PM PDT

    Hello,

First off, I am new to this group. I am hopeful that some of you may have some helpful advice for my wonderful partner. She is a 21 y/o female who has dislocated one shoulder 4 times and the other one once. She is a lover of many different outdoor activities but her shoulders now prevent her from doing many of these. Also, her job requires some arm movements for long periods of time that seem to aggravate the matter.

The first of the dislocations were a few years ago and have been spaced out but are becoming more often.

She has been to a few doctors for this and got an MRI done and was told she has a hillcrest lesion and they did not advise surgery. She has since seen a physical therapist and was given a handful of exercises to strengthen the muscles. (Basically just moving the arm in certain ways with a soup can or similar weight). She does these in spurts but then sometimes it's all too much to bare and she quits doing them for a while. I've read that a dislocation involves a lot of tense muscles for a prolonged period of time and it would make sense that having stretches that go along with strengthening would improve this process. Any merit to this?

She might not like that I'm writing this until there is a glimmer of hope somewhere off in the distance. I know that there must be that glimmer somewhere, but neither of us know where.

I'm not sure what type of other background information might be useful but I wanted to keep this relatively short so here it is. Any help at all or new starting points would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all!

    Help with the splits

    Posted: 07 Jun 2020 05:00 PM PDT

I have been doing 40 minutes of deep yoga every day which has improved my flexibility and posture tremendously. My only issue is my hamstrings, since they are tight from being born with a dislocated hip. I feel like while my hamstring flexibility has improved, does anyone have any tips for stretches for super tight hamstrings?

    Problem similar to duck feet

    Posted: 07 Jun 2020 12:49 PM PDT

My knees point forward and my feet are quite pronated outwards. Any exercises/stretches/rolling routines that can fix this? I'm not sure if it's duck feet due to the knee not being pronated as well but it could be.
