Poses/Activities good for Ankles, wrists, or shoulders?

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 06:11 PM PDT

3 different parts for 3 different reasons, I felt it was rude to post 3 times.

    1) Wrists: I've been doing DoYouYoga stuff these last few weeks, and while they are great they don't spend enough time properly getting any one position or stabilizing anything for 5-10-15 minutes at a time. It's more workout-based, I suppose. Anyway, there's a lot of planks and a lot of positions with 90° angles and a lot of pressure (one hand pushups would be an example), and my wrists are not at the same level as my arm is getting. Any advice?

    2) My ankles need to be more flexible. Years of dedicated marching band has built up a ton of muscle to where my ankles could be hit by a truck and the truck would break, but I'd like them to be more flexible.

    3) My left shoulder seems to be fine, but my right shoulder (recently noticed) seems to have always been a little down and forward, and when moving it around in a full circle has issues with the bottom -back 45°. It's probably not dislodged, but I'd like it to feel normal again before doing more complicated and shoulder-reliant yoga poses.

    Thanks for all your helps.

    Increase flexibility

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 07:17 PM PDT

So I've been working out for years and I almost never stretch, like literally stretch maybe once every 5 months, just recently I've started to do stretches and a tiny bit of yoga, what's the best way to increase flexibility? I can't even touch my toes or anything 😂

    Advice for Plus Size Beginner

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 08:23 AM PDT

Hi everyone! I'm 21F and I have a larger body (I weigh around 340lb). I've been getting into yoga and some really easy excersise routines to combat the extra quarantine weight I've put on and in an effort to really start my weightloss journey. I've been following a couple of youtube videos for easy beginner yoga but it's been hard because some of the "beginner" poses arent very achievable at my size and I feel like I dont get the full benefit from some of them

I'd love if anyone could share good videos or programs for plus size beginners, and also anything extra that helped you lose weight with yoga. Its also probably worth mentioning that I have sciatica in my lower back and down my right leg, so yoga for back pain is extra welcome Thanks!

Not sure sure about my 200 hr ytt

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 10:45 AM PDT

After falling in love with yoga and developing a strong home practice for some years, I decided to take a 200 hr ytt. I never used studios regularly, but tried out a few before settling one that seemed to fit what I was looking for.

Covid caused all of the studios to shut down the week we were supposed to start. There was a three week gap before the owner moved the curriculum online. So far its been difficult at best- a lot of schedule changes, logistical problems with sound/streaming (a lot is filmed on a laptop in the empty studio- poor visual/audio, a lot echo and glitches), moving around sections randomly. It just feels really disorganized and has been hard to absorb all of the information through videos. Practice teaching is through Zoom which is just not the same as in person. We've already covered anotomy but I couldn't even tell you where the psoas is... we spent a week "thinking about the muscle engagement during home practice" and had some videos of videos (yes, the instructor played a YouTube video through zoom) on muscles. The whole thing thus far has been like this. We bought an anotomy book...we haven't used it outside of that one week in the context of "not getting too deep, just thinking about it.".

I have talked with 4 out 16 students about it and they all feel the same way. We are all behind and overwhelmed; there are on average 8+ hours of low quality video to watch each week, plus online classes, plus hour long posture clinics, plus the book club reading. I'm up for the work, but it feels so hollow through YouTube/Zoom.

We are due to meet in person for the first time next week to practice teach and I feel so under prepared. Graduation is a few weeks away and I'm afraid I'm getting this certification as a fraud. I mean if anyone can just watch videos and be a teacher, wouldn't everyone??

Is it normal to feel like you haven't really learned anything after a 200 hr ytt? Does this sound normal? I'm also struggling with the fact I paid a lot of money for an in person ytt but ended up on zoom instead.

I tried talking to the instructor but am rebuffed with good old passive positivity. "You'll be great" "I can tell you're dedicated" "We are all in it together" which is nice, but fails to address any of my concerns.

    Any advice is appreciated.

    Help with teaching yoga classes

    Posted: 18 Jul 2020 09:08 PM PDT

    Hi all!

I'm a TA for a university where I am assigned to teach random fitness classes each semester. This fall, I was assigned yoga! I'm familiar with some of the basic yoga poses but not enough that I'm comfortable enough to teach it just yet. Before the fall semester begins, I'll be using my free time to prepare to teach. Does anyone have any advice in being a first-time yoga exerciser and having to teach it at the same time? I have no idea about the level of familiarity that my students have with yoga so I will be teaching people who are anywhere from beginners to advanced. Any advice on the standard yoga sessions in a class, teaching classes, what students typically want out of a yoga class, etc. are greatly appreciated!

Need help getting back into Ashtanga practice!!

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 02:24 AM PDT

Hi all! Ive been doing yoga for over two years now, but honestly just practiced leisurely the first year and then i got into a bit more disciplined practice late last year. Since the corona lockdown i had more time to practice Ashtanga and was making some progress. The latest one being able to hold crow pose! Which i was very proud of.

Im 43kg, 164 cm and anemic. Last month I've been struggling because my iron has dropped dangerously low and ive been taking medications for it. Now, im too weak to practice and when i tried doing a primary series of Ashtanga, i found myself skipping vinyasas because i get so dizzy and i feel so weak. I can't do headstands, can't even balance properly on one legged standing poses. I'm getting so frustrated because these are things i was already able to do well before. I feel like i have to work from scratch again and that the hard work i did before was wasted. Any tips on how i can build up my strength and get back to comfortably practicing Ashtanga again? I'd appreciate if you can link me to some routines I can follow. I really miss being able to do yoga without feeling like shit.

    Thanks in advance!

    New Yoga

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 02:05 AM PDT

I have been doing BeachBody's 3 Week Yoga Retreat on and off for the past 2 years. It really has been a fantastic introduction to Yoga for me. I am a bigger overweight dude. I am looking to change things up and get a new Yoga routine at home that stretches, strengthens, reduces pain and spiritualizes the mind (for lack of better words). Any thoughts what I can do next? Thanks!

Home yoga routine motivation and scheduling general questions...

    Posted: 18 Jul 2020 09:00 PM PDT

Alright. So I have been an on-again/off-again yoga practitioner for about 16 years. I always manage to fall off the wagon, one way or another.

I got into a good groove a few years ago with Bikram. I was going steadily, 4-6 days a week for a period of about 8 months or so. Loving life, feeling energized, working on my form, breathing deep, balancing, just really feeling it.

Then my studio closed down due to rent increases. The other studios in my area are about $60+ more expensive than mine was per month (probably why they closed), and I couldn't afford to continue.

In January this year, I signed with a regular gym and started actively going about 3 days a week, to fit my busier schedule. Then COVID-19 hit and everyone closed down. My studio continued to offer online and live classes, but I just wasn't motivated enough to do it.

I like having the breath of the room. The feel of everyone working on the same goal independently. The peace.

My house is not the same.

My SO and I have pets. It's really just the one cat who feels he needs to inspect my every movement and I find this incredibly distracting. I don't have the safe space to get away and have solitude or peace in which to continue building my practice.

How it stands (and looks for the foreseeable future in the US), however, I need to improvise, adapt, overcome.

My first question: how do you stay focused and motivated at home to practice?

Second part: I am wanting to really learn the nuances of several poses, while also following some sequences on YouTube (think Adrienne, Five Parks). I'm curious how I should blend these together?

Should I carve out space for both? Should I only focus on my practice and habits for now?

For example, I am currently wanting to better my dolphin pose so I can continue to strengthen my shoulders, but I am working through pieces of the pose in steps so I can get better (I'm not strong enough in some ways to get the full pose yet, though it feels amazing).

So, should I, say, set aside two days a week where I work on dolphin, and then do my regular practice as normal? Or something I've not considered?

I appreciate the feedback and general advice. You are all so strong and amazing. I hope to become as focused one day. :)

    Thank you very much.
