    9 Yoga Poses For Beginners

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 03:58 AM PDT

[comp] I started yoga because I have a lot of tension in my neck and shoulders. I find the DFD very helpful but I’m never sure if I do it right

    For me, yoga is therapy.

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 06:47 AM PDT

I don't know if this is the sub for this, or if it's more about technique etc.

Does anybody else work through some really heavy stuff during their practice?

I cry , I laugh, I learn deep things about myself that are new to me. I work through things I've buried deep down, release emotional blockages that have been there for decades.

People always say to me "I don't know how you do it! I just don't feel like working out!"

I CRAVE my time on my mat. I look forward to it, I don't want it to end. I'm pretty good shape yeah, but that's a convenient byproduct, it is really not why I do it.

Yoga is my therapy, honestly. I mean I love actual therapy too, but I've worked through more trauma on the mat than anywhere else , and I don't know where I'd be without yoga in my life.

PSA: Do not order anything from Pureful Yoga! It's a scam

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 08:15 AM PDT

At first glance, the website looks legit, but upon further investigation it has way too many red flags.

I ordered a cork yoga mat from them 2 months ago now, and still have received nothing. They took the payment right away, but have made zero attempts to justify the situation, despite my requests for a refund. Every e-mail I receive from them just says, it's on the way... Namaste. (I abbreviated to save some typing)

The tracking is odd too. It continually says the package is a week out, and that extends by a week, each week. So, the mat has been a week away for 2 months now.

I am going to report the site to the FTC and other online protection agencies, so others hopefully don't fall victim as well.

The red flags I see are:

    1. The products are on sale year round.
    2. There is no contact information on the site, other than a form.
    3. All reviews are 5-star
    4. The site is almost too clean, if that makes any sense.

    Pet hair and mats

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 01:31 PM PDT

Another newbie "I'd like to upgrade my mat and have a question" post. I've read through the FAQ, Wiki, and searched the sub for other posts about mats. I've learned a lot but still am unsure how to choose a mat.

The issue is that I practice at home (exclusively right now, will probably practice in a studio some once covid calms down), and we have four dogs and a very muddy/dusty yard, which translates to a floor that's almost always dirty despite my best efforts. Even if I clean the floor right before I put my mat down, they'll inevitably run around and shed some during my practice. I was leaning toward a Jade Harmony, but then I read a couple comments saying it will pick up every pet hair and speck of dirt. My current cheapo mat picks up dirt, so I'm wondering how different a Jade Harmony would be.

So, folks with pets who practice at home - which mat do you like? Is pet hair an issue for you? Or is it easy enough to just wipe off the mat every time and move on with your life?

    Other stuff:

I'm doing some power yoga (vinyasa?) and some yin. Interested in starting ashtanga. I don't see myself doing hot yoga. I'm sweaty enough as is.

I get sweaty during intense work and would like some grip, but anything that's an upgrade from my $5 mat would be great.

Budget is up to about $150.

Tl;dr Pet hair in my house has me hesitant to buy a Jade Harmony. Looking for other pet owners' experiences and/or specific recommendations.

    Advice for beginners.

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 05:53 PM PDT

I want to start practicing yoga at home. I started two weeks ago, practicing only every Sunday. My question is, would I benefit more if I perform yoga 3x per week rather than 1x per week?

My once per week practices has really been helping with my shoulders, neck and hamstrings. My "tightest" areas. If I were to practice 3x a week, would I need to choose specific area training, for example:

    Tues; focus on legs/lower body,

    Thurs; focus on core/upper body,

    Sun; focus on arms/shoulders?

Or should I keep performing full body cycles?

    Thank you in advance!

How do you “work up to a goal pose”

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 05:48 PM PDT

At the moment I'm doing a home practice with a lovely down dog subscription. I'm bouncing between beginner one and beginner two, focusing on Hatha and Yin because my body likes those the most.

I'm just wondering if there's a pose you want to get better at- let's say camel for this one.

Do you create sequences towards that pose? Or do you just kinda breathe and try practicing it repetitively?

I know it's different because I don't have a studio right now and hopefully I'll be able to find somewhere when life settles down. I just see all these wonderful COMP and I'm wondering what the best way to structure "goals" would be for poses. Or am I even looking at this the wrong way?

    Yoga on carpet- help!

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 05:34 PM PDT

Hi all. I am one of those people who started doing yoga for the first time during shelter-in-place, and I'm really loving it so far!

I just started doing hatha yoga (I started with restorative, completely on the floor) and my current mat/floor situation is just not working out. Basically, my entire apartment is carpeted, and I feel like my mat slides all around during my practices and negatively impacts my poses and posture.

Is this just a mat problem? Should I invest in a better mat? Are there any other tips or tricks for doing yoga on carpet?

    Custom yoga app suggestions

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 05:15 PM PDT

I haven't done any yoga for a year or so because I have some back problems. I won't go into it in detail but if I do a lot of forward bends I'm in agony afterwards. Most classes near me and a lot of YouTube videos seem to really love forward bends so I'm struggling to come up with a solution that lets me do yoga but not be in pain. I'm not a beginner but I'm not really at a stage where I'm confident doing a completely free practice on my own either.

I'm looking for something, ideally an app with prompts, but I guess a website that generated a list or something would be ok, where I can either get a generated routine but exclude certain possess or select my poses from a list.

    Can anyone make suggestions?

    Beginner question...

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 07:53 AM PDT

And it might be a dumb one. So I'm a 40yr male. Been very active; working out, weights/cardio, for the last year or so. Now I wanna do yoga. I've downloaded a few apps. Got a nice mat. And have been doing it for about a week or 2 now. I love it. However, my flexibility is a minor issue I'm having.

I never listened to mom and dad back in the day when they said "sit up straight, stop crouching". Now I'm paying the price lol. So my question is I guess, instead of doing actually yoga sessions (on an app with a trainer or in real life with a trainer once things open up) should I just do 20-30 min of stretching. And stretching one part at a time. Or is it beneficial to just jump into beginner sessions and do my best ?

Any good youtube channel for very soft or restorative yoga ?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 07:51 AM PDT

    Hi All,

I practice Vinyasa and Yin for a year now and these are perfect for me but a month ago, I hurt my great pectoralis very bad and now, every time I do sun salutation or just plank or downard dog or hold a position in Yin, the pain comes back. My doctor told me to totally let the muscle rest for at least a month but I don't want to give up on yoga for such a long period of time.

For this reason I am looking for some very soft yoga lessons which are not demanding to use any strength in this muscle. I read about restorative yoga and it seems good for this but I don't know any good youtube channel with restorative yoga. So I would like any advice about this.

Thanks in advance for your help.

How to place my hands in downward facing dog.

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 03:41 AM PDT

Hi everybody! I recently joined this community and love it. I just injured the outer perimeter of my palms from my pinky to my thumb because I was putting too much pressure while in down dog. I'm taking a rest down down dog and any other position that send energy to the palms, but how should I be placing my hands in down dog in the future? Your help is much appreciated. Thank you!
