In this way there is no longer any need for the subtle aggression of self-improvement, for the endless guilt of not doing enough. It offers the possibility of an end to the ceaseless round of trying so hard that wraps so many people's lives in a knot. Instead there is now meditation as an act of love. How endlessly delightful and encouraging."

    – Bob Sharples, from Meditation: Calming the Mind

This quote brought so much clarity to my meditation practice. I thought I'd share with you lovely people.

    Contradiction between self-improvement and self-love

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 09:26 PM PDT

I see so many posts & comments about how self-improvement is dangerous because implies that you are not good enough as you are. What about meditation proves that focusing on self-love 100% of the time is best way to live life? I can point to many things i love about myself/ my life that are only there because I've worked on them with a growth mindset. Is there not some happy balance between self-improvement and self-love such that they are not mutually exclusive?

Used to meditate, and beginning to really miss myself on meditation.

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 09:06 PM PDT

"Start again" sounds easy enough; however, I feel too far gone.

Regardless, I intend on trying to pick it back up. There was a period of my life where, according to some phone application I used at the time, I had meditated nearly 300 times.

Since then it's rare that I do it once per month, which is sad.

Perhaps I am too far gone. I guess I'll find out after I try to take it back up.

Watching the mind is not possible

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 02:06 AM PDT

My efforts to observe the mind seem to be contradictory, as they do not make me more concious of it. Observing something stationary should not take any effort. The mind therefore is not a stationary entity and the word "mind" is a wrong image. Instead its different thoughts like waves on the ocean. Watching the waves is possible only until they dissapear. Then you are left searching for the next wave/thought which is a mind activity and does not increase your awareness, in the same way that solving a sudoku doesnt. Watching the ocean as a whole is not possible as an active effort, because there is no specific point that can be observed, at which all of the waves appear. Only in quiet unpointed global awareness can all the waves be noticed. All efforts to watch the mind are therefore futile as no structure that could be called "mind" actually exists.

Hearing an odd ringing noise and feeling spinal energy

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 03:45 PM PDT

So yesterday I was meditating and I started feeling this energy (Kinda like a vibration) creep Up my spine and eventually spread around my body. Then I started hearing this high pitched noise (it was inside of me and it wasn't tinnitus) and it freaked me out so I stopped. After I stopped I felt this weird pressure on the top of my head. What's going on haha and thank you for any answers :)

Looking for a buddy to develop a routine

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 01:00 AM PDT

Hey :) I am looking for a buddy to develop a meditation routine. I had one, but it faded and recently I somehow cannot keep it up. Psychologically speaking, peer pressure and sharing the experience is super helpful in developing a routine. I am looking for maybe some weekly messaging and a shared doc where we note down something we learned or we thought of or we want to improve on regarding meditation :)

10 days meditating...is it working? Am I doing it wrong?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 07:48 PM PDT

Tomorrow makes 10 days since I started meditating on a daily basis. I've dabbled with it on and off before. Some days after I meditate I feel at peace, but other days I get really emotional afterwards. Isn't the goal to be peaceful every time? Does it just take time?

    Question about my experiences meditating

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 11:19 PM PDT

During my workdays, I often take time to lay for 10-20 minutes and just close my eyes and breathe deep and relax. In more than a few instances, I find myself sort of "watching" a story unfold.

An example would be I close my eyes, my mind goes calm, and I find myself seeing a group of people on a raft among a river, and as I watch it's being narrated. Not with words, but it's the same feeling as being young and having a book read to you, but feeling it instead and watching it happen

This has happened countless times, and it's different scenarios each time. A teacher going home and creating a study guide for her class, and it not turning out well. A man going to the grocery store and picking up food for his family. Just random things. I ask this because while I'm experiencing all this, I'm aware that I'm awake, and can still hear and feel the world around me (aware that I have only a few mins left on my break).

I tend to lean towards the paranormal, and I don't want that to be my first impression, so I'm asking if others have experienced this or can share their thoughts?

    Thank you!

    "saw" violet/purple flame while meditating

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 07:33 PM PDT

    hi!

So i wasn't into meditation that much. tried it a few years ago but i didn't really make a habit out of it.

So today i smoked a joint and i got a little tired and went into a semi sleep mode. kinda felt like what i thought deep meditation would feel like. when i closed my eyes for a while i saw dark violet flames in my head. more like a deep purple actually but there was no smoke or water. the flames were about chest height if i would stand a few meters away from it and the flames were flickering.

So i was thinking "alright what the fuck is this. if this is some spiritual meditation stuff, it probably means that something bad is going on since the flames are so dark"

i then tried to change the color of the flames to white in my mind because i thought white would be a positive color but it kept changing back.

i know this sounds fucking crazy but i'm just interested since google said this was actually a positive thing.

So looooong story short : with your experience..do you think this has some meaning? if so which? it was an unusual experience for me in an unusual state of mind (half asleep) so it just felt..important :D

    Thank you very much!

oh and by the way : another time the same thing happened and i saw a blue buddha like figure right in fron of me. he kinda scrolled up in my head. saw his robe first then his arms, neck then head. if i remember correctly he had multiple arms (shiva? :D )

    The Goal of Meditation

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 05:56 AM PDT

We get a lot of questions here about the goal of meditation or reasons for meditating, and it happens that I'm listening to the Waking Up Introductory Course again and at the end Day 31 Sam gives what I think is a pretty good "goal" for meditation so I thought I'd share.

In the last minute of the session, simply begin again, but recognize that in practicing in this way you are expressing an intention. An intention to be happier, and be better placed to make others happier. An intention to suffer less and to be in a better position to help others suffer less. The goal here is wisdom. The wisdom that comes from recognizing how things already are in this moment and stepping out of the fantasy life, the from having a mind that's perpetually distracted. In the final minute just remember what an enormous expression of good will, for yourself, and for the world, this practice is.

-- Sam Harris, Day 31 of the Waking Up Introductory Course.

PS. I like the app but this isn't intended as an endorsement. Try the free sessions in all the apps and see which one works for you. I will note that for Waking Up he says he doesn't money to keep people from getting the material so if you email them they'll get you a free year.

How to sense energy (beginner focussed)

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 02:46 PM PDT

I feel like learning how to pick up on and sense energy is an important step in any new practitioner's experience. Starting off with a broader category (in this case, elemental energy) is a great way to get in tune with your intuition and learn about how different types of energy feel to you. This talks about those types of energies in depth and also discusses energy signatures, and I thought some of the lovely people here may enjoy. ❤️

How to stay present while being productive?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 09:45 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I have been practicing meditation and mindfulness for many years, but there is an area in life which I cannot seem to stay present in: Working.

For some reason, as soon as I open my computer and start looking at my todolist my mind completely takes over and all other senses are turned off. Or at least my attention on them completely disappears. The result is that workdays are draining a lot of my energy.

I have been battling this issue for years, but not really found neither the cause of the solution to it. At the moment I am trying to work single tasking, taking regular breaks every 25th minute and trying to stay present as I work - but nothing really seems to be working.

Does anyone have any clues as to what the reason might be, how I can approach it or potential solutions?

Thanks in advance to anyone who takes time to read and ponder this!

    mediated during the eclipse

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 10:02 PM PDT

so i decided to mediate for a while during the july 4-5 eclipse.

the fireworks exploding outside were extremely loud, but as i fell deeper into the pattern of breathing, i was able to focus.

i felt the standard buzzing that started at the tips of my ears and then slowly but surely spread across my body. soon after, the energy felt too intense, and i tried to direct it to a certain area.

immediately, i felt an intense, pleasurable warmth between my eyebrows.

    then, in this exact order:

i felt a cold buzzing circling the crown of my head my throat ached my heart fluttered my solar plexus pulled inward and i felt a solid awareness and comfort in my sacrum/base of spine

now, i know next to nothing about chakras, other than the basic locations. this was not intentional movement of my energy, i simply tried to focus on the energy itself and it suddenly moved and aligned itself along these points, circling in between. this continued for around 20 minutes before my eyes snapped open.

i have finished meditating, and i feel a sense of calm that i have never felt before. i have only been meditating since march.

    anyone have any ideas?

    Mental Indifference

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 06:15 PM PDT

I recently heard a very interesting thought experiment.

Imagine being alone in a field with a simple activity, such as reading a book. You can feel nature as it is around you, but also the peace that can only be experienced through being alone without distraction.

Then, a squirrel approaches and hops around doing squirrel things without acknowledging your presence. Nothing changes, you can continue the activity as if you were alone.

Now imagine you see a human approach minding their own business doing human things without acknowledgimg yoir presence. All of a sudden its harder to devote 100% of your attention to the task at hand.

Could meditation help teach one to mantain mental indifference to the presence of another human?

If someone has the rare condition where they are unable to sleep can meditation replace that or at least help to the point where the person lives way past the year or less mark? Can meditation be done using headphones?

    Wood sandals

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 09:41 PM PDT

In today's age shoes are made of rubber and materials that stop the flow in energy. When walking I want to feel the connection to Mother Earth without endangering my feet. Wood is a conductor of energy and the energy would flow through it. I've been looking for sandals for men but can't find anything besides these Japanese sandals I don't personally find nice. Anyone have any suggestions or where to look?

DAE appreciate nature more when they keep a consistent meditation habit?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 01:51 PM PDT

    (DAE = /r/DoesAnybodyElse)

Just curious about who might feel the same! I find myself looking at plants and up at the trees, really appreciating the greens and the colorful flowers and the patterns of their shifting movements in the wind.

Another explanation might be that these are all things that I (would) appreciate anyway, but I've lost touch with that part of myself, and meditation allows it to rise to awareness in daily life :)

    Self retreat

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 03:36 PM PDT

While there are many good reasons to travel the world, doing so to find peace or freedom is not one of them. It's actually deeply unphilosophical. Peace of mind and freedom are things that come from within, so if you are running away from cognitive dissonance, you are actually running away from yourself. Unfortunately when you travel you have to bring yourself along for the journey.

Let me offer you a simpler and also much cheaper way to find peace of mind and freedom with this exercise. Regularly travel inside your mind, specially if you need peace of mind or freedom. Nowhere else is anyone as free as in their own mind. You can be different right here, right now. No need to travel to find yourself. All you need is five to ten minutes a day to shut out the outside world and to look inside your own mind.
