Unsure if starting Ashtanga or not

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 08:37 AM PDT

    Hi everyone!

Hope you are all doing well and safe.

I was looking into starting ashtanga yoga to replace my gym lifting routine but when asking a few yoga teachers they all gave me a similar answer which all pretty much sounded to be like this:

Ashtanga is a very outdated style of practice that doesn't allow for skeletal structure differences and isn't based on modern functional movement. Ask any long-term ashtanga practitioner what injuries they've had and they will unfortunately give you a long list (or they'll hide their injuries out of pride of the ashtanga lineage). The sequencing is dangerous, the poses are all alignment based, and the pace of the class is too fast to realistically move with the natural rhythm of the breath so the student is more likely to get injured.

I have been practicing strong vinyasa flows and have been feeling amazing and was wondering what people thought about comments like these.

The only time I have tried Ashtanga have been LED classes and many of the times I have hurt my knees trying lotus pose as I did not have the mobility for it and I just pushed it to be able to keep up with the class (I recognize this is completely my fault and being stupid).

Also I have the feeling Ashtanga does not include much of lower body strength so was wondering what people thought about this? As far as I know lower body strength is essential for long term mobility and health.

From reading on the internet and books I get the feeling Ashtanga has been made a bit of a cult and you´re either in or you´re out of it.

Hope this doesnt come across as rude or unrespectful I am just asking out of pure curiosity being in a place where I really do not know much about this lineage.

    Thank you!

    Daniel

Is there a better name for chakrasana backward roll in ashtanga?

Whenever I look for chakrasana, I always see posts about wheel pose.

But then there is chakrasana backward rolling...??? They're not even close to the same pose imho... how can they share the same name?
