How did you learn to flow unassisted by video or other instruction?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 09:36 AM PDT

(Sorry for mobile) I've been doing yoga for a couple years now (less the past 5 months while dealing with the pandemic and resulting mental health issues for nyself), and I feel like I am just lost when it comes to flowing on my own. I am trying to get back into a daily practice, and want to commit to learning to be able to flow unassisted by an instruction video or others. I have never really been good at connecting poses though, I feel like I know poses I want to get into but I don't know how to string them together and transition between them. Even when I lift weights I write out my workout ahead of time and then follow that at the gym because I am not good at coming up with exercises on the spot.

I am hoping that by committing to 20 minutes of unassisted flow each day while also watching instruction videos for other practice will help, but I feel like I have never seen progress with myself in this aspect. I also feel that it's impeding my progress with poses and such, because I am always practicing at the level of the instruction video and have no personal goals or challenges for myself because I don't know what to do or where to go next. Just feeling very stalled out and uninspired and I need help.

Edit: I cannot reply to all your comments but thank you for all your suggestions. I have lots of things to try now!

    Emotional yoga??

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 05:43 PM PDT

Has anyone ever had A LOT of emotions suddenly come to visit in the middle of a yin practice? I just did. I was in the middle of butterfly and all of a sudden the tears were flowing. Kept going all the way till savasana. Then I finally calmed down.

My teacher always says "we hold our issues in our tissues" but this was a first in my 4 or so years where I have gotten THAT emotional during a practice! Talk about a cleanse!

    Wrist-friendly yoga alternatives?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 03:56 PM PDT

Hi! Earlier this summer I got a minor wrist surgery, and I've been eagerly awaiting being able to return to my regular practice. My doctor just cleared me for yoga, but my wrist is still feeling really weak and sensitive. I tried doing a downward dog but it just hurt too much to put weight on it.

What are some wrist-friendly alternatives to common yoga moves like downward dog and chattaronga? Most videos online are very wrist-centric practices - do you have recommendations for low wrist impact yogis to follow?

    Thank you and namaste!

Adjustment for Warrior/lunges for weak quads and inflamed knees

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 02:45 PM PDT

    Hey all-

I've been doing VERY short yoga videos in the morning (10 min) and despite the fact that the lunging poses are short and few, sometimes it still inflames my knees. I have a feeling this is mostly because the larger muscles in my leg are still too weak, so I wanted to know if there was a good way to adjust my Warrior/any other lunging poses to help with this. It it ok to have the bent leg a little further than hip distance apart and/or to angle your foot out in Warrior? i know it's supposed to be straight, but my knee still collapses in even when I'm paying attention!

    Thanks!

    I somehow over stretched

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 05:26 PM PDT

I was doing some gentle yoga (hatha?) yesterday, and got really into this side stretch pose. It felt wonderful while i was doing it on both sides, i didn't feel like i was pushing to hard, but today i woke up and my lowest ribs, and their surrounding muscles are so sore. I feel like i did 1000 side crunches. I understand some soreness is to be expected when your trying new poses, but I've not experienced anything like this since i started doing yoga in December. So i need a pro tip, how do i know if I'm pushing to far into my pose? Is pain the only indicator?

Injured my knee from excessively doing Hero's pose, need advice !

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 12:59 PM PDT

Hi all :) Hope you are having a great day and sincere happy wishes from South-Africa

I am pretty new to yoga and I have done a rookie mistake by overdoing Hero's pose ( I have bad ankles). I have been giving it a day or two off , but have no committed three days for it to rest properly. It has been 2 weeks and it is still not 100% repaired.

DO you guys have any similar experiences you might share that can help ? I'm so paranoid haha but I'ma 25 year old guy with no knee injury history, would like some reassurance.

Have a great day and stay safe :)

Good yoga sequences that are easy on the ankles/don't incorporate downward facing dog

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 12:38 PM PDT

Hi everyone! As the title says, I'm looking for some yoga sequences (online videos, guides, etc.) that don't incorporate poses that stress the ankles too much. I've been dealing with what I believe to be mild to moderate peroneal tendinitis, which onset after running a half marathon on uneven ground (need to see a physical therapist, but covid has been spiking in my area and I'm hesitant to go see someone in-person). While it doesn't generally bother me in my day-to-day life, I notice it begins to flare up when I'm doing a lot of yoga that incorporates down dog/planks/etc. Because I have tight hamstrings (I've been working on this) I have to stand on my tippy toes while in downward dog, which I think is aggravating things.

I'd like to find a workaround so I can continue practicing and building strength and flexibility. I can stand and put weight on the ankle no problem, it's just poses that require me to stand on my toes or put an unusual amount of weight/pressure on the ankle that seem to be making things worse.

    Handstand

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 02:18 PM PDT

I been struggle to structure better my handstand journey! My main goal is achieve one arm handstand but I'm concerned I'm not taking the right road! My routine is structure like Monday and Thursday I do strength work where I do handstand push ups front lever pulls ( tuck) , straddle planche push ups and finish with wider pull ups and ring push ups. Tuesday and Friday I do just one arm drills and some two arms max hold . Wednesday and Saturday I work on handstand press ( straight arm ) doing some tuck variations and some compression work and pancake stretch. My goal is one arm handstand and second it will be planche. I'm just sure if I do enough work on one arm and I can combine this 2 goals and obviously still keep my body mass! It will better to focus more on handstands drills I like just have one day week where I dedicate to basics calisthenics? Thank you

Need recs for yoga studio with carpet

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 11:51 AM PDT

My new house has a bonus room with new carpeting. I'm an advanced beginner at yoga and need recommendations for yoga equipment to advance my practice. I have a basic yoga mat, strap with loops, and blocks. Should I invest in a thicker mat? Should I get a large gym mat and use my yoga mat on top of that? What else would be a good idea for my new yoga studio?

    Favorite online LIVE classes?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 05:39 AM PDT

I have come to the realization that I need to be a part of a live class. Something about the time restriction and the knowledge that there are other people going through the same postures is helpful in getting me to show up. I just don't connect to doing classes at my own pace (jealous of those of you who can). The only studio I know of near me that is doing online classes is still $130 a month. This is just more than I'm willing to pay right now. Do any of you belong to virtual studios and love the classes? I don't expect to pay $29 a month but was hoping for something in the $70-$80 range.

I tend to like hatha classes, but am open to others.

What is a "bar" in context of a plank?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 10:16 AM PDT

Hi, I don't do yoga yet but I want to.

This article mentions the word bar throughout the article and I am confused by what this is supposed to mean.

Also, if anyone can recommend a concise article/video on how to do a plank properly please do so. I've no one to show me in person.

    Thanks in advance.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 10:14 AM PDT

    Ahoy-hoy folks,

So ive decided to begin regular faily yoga sessions to improve flexibility and focus.

Problem is, I have no idea where to start. Im not super keen on guided yoga sessions on YouTube, id like to know how people found out about positions, transitions etc?

Where did you all start learning from, and what is the best way to get started?
