Ive recently realised meditation and spirituality is not what everyone makes it out to be. Meditation is simply just sitting with your thoughts and clearing the mind and spirituality is simply just observing reality for what it is (well that is what Buddhism teaches)

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 04:55 PM PDT

Recently I have decided to dedicate alot of my time to practicing mediation and learning the way of the Buddah or as they say walking the path of enlightenment. I guess I have always put spirituality on this pedestal as if it was something ultimately divine and mystical ( which it can be) but my interpretation was it takes years or lifetime to achieve spiritual wisdom and sustenance but you can gain an insight of this simply from meditation for even a week. It is undeablity beautiful in how simple it really is. I don't exactly know what I thought I was looking for this whole time. But all it seems to be about is reflection of one's self and reality. And mediation is simply there to teach us how to be mindful for not just our sake but others aswel. It teaches us this by simply observing

By becoming an observer I have realised how beautiful, simple and perfect life really is. So I will continue my path and I hope this helps anyone out there who is confused about what mediation really is and how it helps

4 Life Lessons to Learn from Water

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 05:54 AM PDT

"Water is fluid, soft, and yielding. But water will wear away rock, which is rigid and cannot yield. As a rule, whatever is fluid, soft, and yielding will overcome whatever is rigid and hard. This is another paradox: what is soft is strong."

    -Lao Tzu (Chinese Philosopher)

An incredible, miracle fluid surrounds our shores. It makes up every organ, tissue and cell in your body. It's what keeps this green planet breathing and alive. Water, somehow easily overlooked for its abundance and neutral characteristics embodies plenty of virtues within itself.

Taoist wisdom takes a different approach to water and acknowledges the myriad of virtues that it possesses. I wrote an article talking about this approach, check it out if you want here

(I've followed the rules in regards to self promotion but take this post down if it violates the rules.)

Meditation itself is an act of self love.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 08:59 PM PDT

I've always wondered how one would be showing themselves self love by not engaging fully with thoughts, than it hit me. The sole reason we're doing meditation is to calm ourselves and reset back into the present moment. We're dealing with the brain clutter by simply not by directly engaging with it or trying to prove it wrong. Noticing we're having those thoughts but choosing not to further pursue and feed them, but instead opting to focus on the breath or choice of meditation object. Thoughts can be very easy to dive back into when you're thrown curveball ones such as "Meditation isn't working otherwise Id be at calm!" Or "Why can't I focus on the breath, this is pointless!". Yes we can try to "prove" them wrong, but at that point your just adding fuel to the fire. By redirecting away from that thinking you're disengaging in a healthier, easier and much more pleasant way.

Has anyone read “Eastern Body Western Mind” by Anodea Judith?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 02:38 AM PDT

If there is anyone planning to read it, do you want to start a little reading circle? Lol. I'm planning on starting it soon and taking notes. I'm interested in spiritual thought and how it applies to culture and psychology. I'm trying to understand better how meditation, energy work, and chakra work applies as a therapeutic technique. Mainly to see how that may apply to trauma recovery.

For those that have already read it, do you mind sharing a run down of what you thought? Perhaps questions that weren't answered?

    Thanks!

Meditated for 97 minutes outside today

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 12:55 PM PDT

And i want to share some thoughts i have after this session, maybe some of you will find them.. Funny. Or valuable in some way. Idk, maybe this is considered a shitpost, feel free to remove.

    Here it goes:

Reality is actually absolutely hilarious. I sometimes forget that and take things super serial. Remember to smile and laugh - especially at yourself and your mind.

Did you know that seagulls screaming at eachother is secretly a master-orchestra playing its most beautiful tune? I didn't until today. I would pay top dollar for the show, but they only play that exact song one time, then never again. A real shame - or exactly what makes it so beautiful?

The mind's expectation of reality often tricks you into thinking it is something else than it is. Actually almost always does, at least for me. And in my case reality often seem much worse than it actually is because i expect waaay to much of it for some reason.

Physical pain is not an illusion, it really fucking hurt at times. Who would've thought that about sitting on a rock, barefeet and crosslegged for 97 minutes.. But the good old "pain is inevitable, suffering is optional" rings true. Wonder if its truly like this for all types of pain - emotional as well. Still some way to go there.

My experience of reality changed a lot during this session. It was especially noticeable after when i opened my eyes. But reality did not change the slightest, if i looked at reality before the session the same way as after, it would be exactly the same. Insane, the power of the mind and perception is. I guess this is my way of realizing that the fundamental consciousness that we are is always present and it is always it - consciousness (for a lack of a better word). It can never be lost nor attained. Everything else is appearing in it, and i mean everything. Differentiation and judgmenets happens and it feels like its gone or that you get it - that too is merely appearance. It still just is. Maybe i use the wrong words, but i hope you get what i mean.

And lastly, i really really wanted to thank those seagulls for their beautiful melody.. Sadly, when I tried to go up to one to show my respect with a bow, it flew away and almost shit on a person eating her dinner.. A musician AND a comedian, bravo. I salute you, seagull.

In all seriousness i want to thank you all for a great community, even though i don't post often i read a lot of posts and comments. I hope someone can relate to some of the experiences or (reluctant to call it this) insights i had. Also i would love to talk to fellow seagull-orchestra enthusiasts! You guys are beautiful, stay compassionate <3

    TLDR: Seagulls, man.

Meditation : DARK (Netflix series) God-Particle analogy

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 01:09 AM PDT

I found this to help me; For those of you who watched DARK, you already know it; the God-Particle

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqMH_oXYqF0

I think that my mind is like this God-particle with several thoughts trying to break-away from it in different tangents and all I do is when I feel that the thought left it's center, to extend it and go outward, I gently look at it and it automatically comes back to the center. All you have to do is acknowledge and the thought is back to center. Though I am new to meditation, this technique seems to be helping me to just observe and not restrict anything

Meditating Friends: A Public Service Announcement

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 05:57 PM PDT

I have a simple message: don't sit too long in one position! I was meditating (and working) cross-legged or in half-lotus to excess and now have damaged nerves in my ankles. The pain is intermittent but excruciating. I'm looking at physio, drugs, and probably never sitting cross-legged again as long as I live.

Please my friends, get up and move around every 20 minutes! If your feet go numb, listen to your body! Don't be the determined idiot I was!

What happened to me - Everything "stopped" during meditation

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 01:48 AM PDT

    Hello,

I just want to ask if anyone has ever experienced that what I did. I was meditating like every day but the difference was that I heard a fly flying around my head. I opened my eyes and saw that fly moving so slow that I watched it and threw it outside. It seemed like this fly wanted me to catch it. Like it stopped. It felt like some superhuman reaction speed just like my body reacted automatically to catch it and I could watch in slow motion. Does anyone experienced the same or knows why it happened

What is the best meditation app that is worth spending some money on?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 01:30 AM PDT

I have been trying out some of the few free guided meditations on the app calm and like it thus far, but I'm not sure if it's worth to pay for the extended version of the app. Does anybody know if there are other apps that offer better services or does somebody have any experience with the extended version of calm? I'm just looking for some guidance within my meditation journey and I like opening up to new ideas and more ways of meditation.

    Meditation feels like charging yourself

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 01:10 AM PDT

Sometimes your smartphone needs to be charged. Sometimes your body and mind need to be charged. Even though you won't die if you don't meditate, your mind wouldn't function probably.

The real you is the observer of the thoughts. Therefore, in the same way you would care about your smartphone- a property of yours, you should care about your mind- a property of yours. Not in terms of a physical property but something you own.

No benefits after 30 days!! Getting frustrated and considering quitting

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 12:46 AM PDT

Hello so I've been meditating for the past 30 days, 15min in the morning and 15 in the evenint.using headspace basic.

It's been 30 days and I don't feel much different. People report feeling always calm etc yet i still get angry over bullshit and none of that actually happens. I feel like i am not putting in enough effort or something.

Also the phrase focus on the breath is ambiguous. There are so many ways to focus on it, that i dont know which one is right. Should I focus on the rims of the nostrils? On the sensation in the throat?

Anytime i do this my eyes get tense and/or force open.

What happens when you silence your mind?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 12:38 AM PDT

When you silence your mind, first of all, you are free from jumping into the past and future. You are relieved from stress, worry, anxiety. Once you have silenced your mind, you are able to contemplate the Truth and able to realize that we are not the body, not the mind, not the ego - we are the Divine soul. Silencing the mind is very important because as long as the mind is jumping like a monkey, it does not help us realize the Truth. It keeps us bombarding with thoughts, thoughts of fear, worry, anxiety, hate, revenge. Thoughts are material in nature; therefore, we need to silence the mind so that we can become conscious, we can become aware of who we are, the Divine soul.

    Question regarding phobia of collarbones

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 03:45 PM PDT

I have an odd phobia that has progressively gotten worse over the last 10 years. I get anxiety around collarbones. Just typing this out is tough. I am afraid of having mine touched, touching others' myself, and the mere thought of them causes convulsions. I have difficulty sitting for these mindfulness exercises in the recommended posture, often screaming in my head due to feeling like my collarbone is exposed. Any sort of body scan causes a violent reaction as I get close to the collarbone. As a result, I end up only being able to do these exercises in a fetal position or on my stomach. Any recommendations on potential remedies or advice on different sitting positions?

    Am I thinking to much?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 08:06 PM PDT

When I sit and meditate I used to think about whatever came to my mind. Now I'm not to sure if I'm supposed to be just practicing mindfulness though and focusing on my breathing for example. What should I be doing or thinking during meditation I'm a little lost.

Do you have anything special you do during your meditations?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 11:47 PM PDT

Along with my blind fold, I love tying my hands up and then start my practice. I can go deeper like that for some reason, it's kinda signaling I got no where to go but to practice meditating. I had a lot of profound experiences being a 'prisoner' with my blind folds and hands tied. Do you guys have anything special or specific thing you do in your meditations?

    I'm new!

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 07:51 PM PDT

Hii! I'm trying to get my life back so that I can live in the present and also know/listen myself and my needs. I think meditation can help me with that but I don't know how to start. I searched on YouTube but most videos are like '10 minutes of meditation' or 'Meditation musics' and stuff like that, so I wanted to ask you guys if there is something I need to learn first (and if you can tell how). Have a nice day and thanks in advance!

    Meditation and Anxiety

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 02:33 PM PDT

Hi everyone. I'm a massive anxiety sufferer and it's taken over my life. My head is filled with 'what ifs' and plays out scenario's constantly. I can barely concentrate properly so meditating is a real struggle but I'm trying to persevere (5 mins a day for nearly a week).

A bit of context, I've had various failed counselling sessions because I can't afford to pay so I've followed free schemes. The first was two sessions. The second couldn't fit me in so directed me to an online website. And the third offered 6 phone chats but ended abruptly.

I know all about CBT and mind traps. Yet my anxiety strikes through. So I'm turning to meditation as a spiritual guide to overcome my horrific feelings.

Any support would be appreciated. Tips are especially welcome! I'd like this to be a safe space!

Rant: Why is the internet full of this type of guided meditation?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 08:34 AM PDT

I've been practicing for a while now and I am glad that that's the case. However, whenever I try to look up meditation drills online, most of what I find is try-hard woke music with:

"you are wonderful" "Feel that inner peace" " love has taken over your soul" "You are the master of your own whatever"

Why is that the case? Who listens to this? It sounds so condescending. It's almost like someone mistook me for a child suffering from low self esteem and is just suggesting these things to me hoping I'd buy into it. If it weren't for the Waking Up course by Sam Harris, I wouldn't even have known that all these meditation videos that pop up in my search aren't the only way to meditate.

    Question for Experienced Meditators

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 11:53 AM PDT

Ever since I'm a kid I had these random moments of "shit i'm im gonna die one day, this is real, what the fuck is reality" with a existential angst that really stopped me in my tracks. I can say I can die right now but its purely intellectual and doesnt have this impact as on these moments.

One day I was contemplating how atoms are like 99% empty space and it dawned on me how I'm and everything I'm looking at is basically nothing, also with this existential gut feeling that completely stopped my mind for some minutes.

My question is, are these the insights I'm after on the way to awakening? Or is it still purely intellectual understanding?

I thought retrospecively these might have benn shallow insights into impermanence and nothingness, but who knows.
