Any success stories/experiences with practice after taking an extended break?

    Posted: 20 Sep 2020 08:30 AM PDT

Before Covid hit, I was a dedicated practitioner. I was good at maintaining a practice on my own, though my weekly class with my friends in the yoga community helped keep me motivated. After Covid hit, I got really lazy for the first time in years. My weekly classes were cancelled and my home practice dwindled. This leads me to believe my dedication to practice has always been in some ways, performative. Yoga almost felt like a secret super power (I know this is some serious ego shit).

I moved in with an SO into a small bungalow and after a series of hectic events, I didn't practice anything for about a month (after previous months of serious slacking). Part of my excuse is that the home is small and there's nowhere with privacy to practice. Anyway, I got on my mat last night and was shocked by the tightness in my calves in down dog - a pose that previously felt like a bit of a rest. It was so nice to touch in with myself again.... It seems like flexibility is more fleeting than strength. In some ways it is interesting to feel like a beginner again. I understand better how beginners can find yoga torturous. Stretching is hard work when you're out of practice.

Anyone have any success stories after taking a long break? Did you have any epiphanies after coming back? I know this post is a little all over the place, but I'd be interested to hear other experiences.

    Knee pain recovery

    Posted: 20 Sep 2020 12:43 PM PDT

    Hi everyone!

Hope you are having a lovely weekend so far.

I started having a more consistent yoga routine since May and around 2/3 months ago I injured one knee by trying to get into lotus ( I know, stupid).

Since then it was hurting quite a bit on the outside every time my knee twisted. I have gotten since many physiotherapy sessions and while the pain has gone away completely I still have some weird sensation in it, specially when sitting in heroes pose on my heels; somehow it just does not feel right on that particular knee.

It also feels a bit off when sitting cross legged for quite a while. The last thing I notice is that it might have gotten weaker maybe compared to the other knee as every time I am warming up my wrists by being on my knees and hands and come forward and back, the injured knee kind of clicks and feels weird while the other one is totally fine.

What shall I do to completely heal the knee and stop feeling this weird sensation? Has anybody else had this experience?

Thank you so much and lovely evening!

    Questions about diet and fasting

    Posted: 20 Sep 2020 03:03 AM PDT

Hi everybody. Im looking to rearrange my day and would love some input from anybody. Skip the paragraph, it's for context.

I practice intermitten fasting to help me concentrate in the mornings for work when i get most of my workload done. I practise at 12 midday to practice with an empty stomach so i can break my fast at 1pm. Then in my eating window im eating all the time and definently cant practice being so full and work activities. Then ive never practiced at night because i have live a life at that time. Id like some reccommendations or insight please on any point not necessarily all of them:

    1. How do you incorporate your fasting and practice?
      1. Benefits of a morning practise? Immediately after you wake?
      2. Snacks before practice? Ideal foods? Waiting time?

    Beware of Dogs!

    Posted: 20 Sep 2020 05:20 AM PDT

Disclaimer: I like dogs but i am scared of them sometimes. Specially when they're big and angry at me.

Context: I am a foreign student, living in a small town in Europe and have been a regular Ashtangi for 6 months now. When the weather is good, I like to do my regular practice in the park. I do get a lot of curious stares from people passing by, coz they're neither used to seeing many foreigners nor are they used to seeing Yoga outside of yoga studios.

Problem: The problem is that many dogs feel threatened when I'm in my forward folds. Like whenever i have my head below my waist, the dogs nearby will start growling. Once during Prasarita Padottanasana (wide legged forward fold) a big German Sheppard came quite close to me and barked loudly which freaked me out and made me loose my balance. I quickly sat down in an easy seat and called out the dog in a friendly manner but he just growled at me and left. The owner was quite apologetic. But this seems to be a recurring problem.

Its not harmful in the sense that the dogs never hurt me but I sometimes feel like my practice is destroying the tranquility of the park and the loud barks are ruining my devotion as well (which is the whole point of Ashtanga).

Anyone else ever faced such problems and if so, how do you get the dogs to trust you?
