Welcome to Form Check Friday! Here is the link to all previous Form Check Fridays

Please post a photo or video of the stretch you'd like to be critiqued. Do include any specific questions you have about your form.

Your video or photo should be:

    • Oriented the correct way, we want to see the lines of your body
    • Be formatted such that there isn't unnecessary video of you preparing for the move (keep it short)
    • Have the important bits of the movement clearly visible (multiple angles is always useful)
    • Include the whole body

    Rules for critiquing form

    • Constructive criticism only
    • Feel free to point others to resources that address their form and/or questions if you aren't "qualified" to give them advice yourself

If your form is awesome, consider posting it in the Show Off Sunday thread!

Some yoga asanasThrivikramasana || Bihangasana || leg split

Tested my middle split strength on chairs. Somehow it feels more comfortable than doing it on the floor. Still got a way to go until I can do the full middle splits!

    Splits Progress

I started yoga around June in lockdown with an aim to get handstands and splits one day. I have got just the tightest hamstrings, my hips just won't go all the way down. I have found social media to be very helpful when it comes to getting to know the real-life experience. I have been documenting some part of my journey here too ((https://www.instagram.com/one.stretch.at.a.time/) ). I have been following https://youtu.be/7__5szNyObA this series of splits stretches to get more flexible, while it has worked for my back flexibility,y tight hamstrings just won't give up!

I am feeling very overwhelmed by my inflexibility.. I need some direction

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 09:06 AM PDT

A little background: I have never been a flexible person. In the past, I was never an athletic person either. I played sports in middle school, but not in high school or college. I certainly never paid attention to flexibility either. After college I moved to Colorado and that's when everything changed. Since then I have picked up snowboarding, rock climbing, hiking, etc.. My main passion is actually climbing. I climb 2-3x a week, predominately outside. I want to increase my flexibility significantly since that will help my climbing abilities.

My biggest frustration is my hamstrings. I can't even come close to doing a downward dog with straight legs. I would say that accomplishing down dog with straight legs would be my first small goal so that I can actually start to follow along with basic yoga videos without getting frustrated. Yesterday I tried doing sun salutations and felt absolutely exhausted/frustrated to the point of tears because I couldn't follow the instructions.

I feel absolutely lost... How much time do I spend per day on stretching? What should I be doing? I found a 30 minute beginner yoga video for hamstrings and calves.. Will that be enough to make the progress I want?

I would really appreciate any help/advice. Thank you.

Beginner stretcher - am I doing it wrong?

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 11:40 AM PDT

    Hi there!

Last week I decided I wanted to start incorporating stretching into my nighttime self care routine, because I primarily sit for my job, and also just generally have tight muscles from anxiety/ stress/ life etc.

Stretching my legs and hips feels really good, however , last night I did a lot of work on my back because it's been super tense and I woke up feeling tense and sore all in my back and neck. Is this normal? Originally I was thinking it made sense they might be tense and that stretching then consistently would eventually have them loosen up. But now I'm concerned that I overstretched them as well. I'm not sure what the best course of action is to help my back muscles relax through stretching
