Pranayama: Breathing during Pranayama feels labored is this normal?

Breathing during Pranayama feels labored is this normal?

Hello to all, I have a few questions that I was hoping members of this group can help me with. I started Pranayama (including the parts like Suryashodan, Charnabehdan, etc) a couple weeks ago. I have questions about how to breathe, specifically:

    • I realized I used to chest breathe, and have consciously been belly breathing. When you start consistently belly breathing is it harder at the start and are you supposed to belly breathe at all times or specifically during meditation?
    • During the meditation is it normal for the breathing to feel labored? When I get done with meditation I feel like my lungs are slightly inflamed (nothing serious, but I can feel my lungs having worked hard). Is this normal when you are starting out?
    • I have to focus so much on the breathing that I feel like I am not getting the benefit of letting the mind go and allowing thoughts to come and go.

I Will appreciate any inputs and apologies if the questions are too vague, this is a new area for me and I tried to be as specific as I could as a beginner.
