    Yoga as a plus-sized woman

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 05:09 AM PDT

I love yoga and really enjoy it, but simple poses like downward dog are so painful for my wrists because most of my body weight is in my abdomen. I used to be incredibly strong, flexible, and athletic, but now I feel so weak. It's quite embarrassing and I'm losing motivation to keep going. I can do fairly well with restorative yoga but I would love to also use yoga as a means for weight loss. Does anyone have any tips/recommendations for me? Should I try to lose weight first by doing cardio and then continuing up yoga again?

Which poses have you come to love?

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 07:42 AM PDT

When I first started my practice I absolutely hated happy baby. It made me feel silly, vulnerable and I couldn't relax my lower back so I always ended up tensing my neck. I always groaned when it came up in a routine but I tried to stick with it.

Now it's one of my favourite cool down poses and I love it! Increasing my hip and leg flexibility definitely helped me relax but my whole mindset has changed from shying away from poses that make me feel exposed or less than elegant to embracing them as an important part of my practice.

Which poses have you come across in your practice that you hated at first but grew to love?

I'm pretty sure i have a deviated septum and have trouble breathing and some poses my body is so tense i can't help but to hold my breath. Is there anyway i can get better at breathing?

Overcoming the fear of falling in inversions

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 07:38 AM PDT

I've been working on inversions for a couple of months now. First was the headstand, it took me about 2 months to even lift my feet off the ground and another month to straighten legs. Throughout that journey, i've definitely learned a lot about myself and conquering fear especially after some falls FLAT on my back.

Now I am having a go at a forearm stand, my first couple of times I managed to hold it for about 2 seconds which got me really happy and excited. Tried again and fell flat on my back. (both times thank goodness no injuries because i subconsciously tuck and roll) I've seen many tutorials and how to safely fall, but when I'm upside down all I know disappears!

Now I am conflicted. I love challenges and building up strength to learn this pose, but at the same time I am so so scared of falling flat again. I will definitely beg off for a couple of weeks after this, but I don't know if I will ever have the willpower to try again.

Any tips for pushing through fear?

yoga to do while throwing ball for my dog

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 03:51 PM PDT

Hi all! I live a few minutes walk from a beach and I bring my dog there everyday after work to throw the ball for her. I don't have much yoga experience but I do CrossFit and definitely think doing some simple yoga poses daily would be beneficial to me. Which few poses or exercises could I do on the beach that aren't too intricate so I can still look after my dog? Kind of a strange question but I appreciate any input!

Day 3 yoga camp Yoga with Adriene

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 09:29 AM PDT

I did day 3 of Yoga camp. I surprised myself when my left foot went on the mat in the three legged dog pose. I do shake in my arms but I feel like I'm getting stronger. Yoga is both a physical and mental practice and I feel yoga is helping with my anxiety.

    Yoga pre-hip replacement

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 11:08 AM PDT

I see lots of information for yoga for tight hips, but what about arthritic hips? I heard from my doctor that certain poses could be bad for my hips.

Are there, alternatively, poses to help me with hip pain and maybe even delay hip replacement surgery? (They tell me it could be any time in the next few years, so it's not immediate.)

I might be in the wrong place, but Yoga may help me. Am I on the right track?

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 02:08 PM PDT

I've (45m, 208lbs) read the FAQ, and to be honest I'm a bit overwhelmed. I might have early onset of Osteoarthritis, currently seeing my doctor about that, so don't worry, I am already seeking a professional :)

My doctor recommended I do Sunrise Salutations, but after a very sedentary lifestyle having sat at a computer desk day and night pretty much all my life, I have realized how inflexible I am. I can't touch my toes without bending my legs, my personal trainer at the gym said I have the tightest hamstrings she has ever known, and to top it off, for the past 2 years I can barely put my socks on due to an injury I sustained to my lower back 2 years ago. This is why my doctor suggested yoga.

The problem is I really struggled with Sun Sal, so should I continue with that until I get more flexible, or is there a even more beginner friendly exercise I can do?

By the way, I am doing AthleanX 3-5 days a week so I am really trying to improve my overall fitness. It's just the lack of flexibility that brings me down. Due to COVID, I don't go to the gym, but have good equipment at home. For now I just want to do some Yoga at home.

Is there any hope for me?

Edit: Just to add, I have tried Yoga For Complete Beginners by Adriene, and that so called easy post with legs cross hurts my hip joint really bad. I can sustain it for so long, but can't relax.

    Yoga causing shoulder pain?

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 12:19 PM PDT

So, I know I'm likely doing something wrong, but I'd like your kind souls to help me figure out just what that might be.

So I've recently started my at home practice. I am not in a class for several reasons:

    1. Covid 19

    2. I am fairly shy and wanted to get a little experience under my belt before going in public

    3. Yoga is a calming and private practice for me, I need to be alone to fully enjoy and fall into a practice. It's my alone time, my self care time, no one else's.

Any who, this poses some concern for myself as I cannot see myself doing the poses, I am not a trained expert by any means, and I have no friends to do this with or maybe get some tips from.

All of that has me concerned I may have strained or injured my right shoulder. I noticed in the beginning of practice I felt as though my right arm felt longer and made my right shoulder blade feel awkward and almost out of place. I chalked it up to bodies not being symmetric and it is what it is.

I've been practicing for about a week and a half now with one day of no yoga. I am a beginner so I'm not doing super crazy poses or anything yet.. but it seems after sessions my neck and shoulders hurt immensely. I'm not sure why because it's mostly focused on my right side, but my left is okay aside from the expected muscle soreness.

I want to continue my practice but I don't want to injure myself, and it's hard to stay motivated when it's causing more pain than relief, which is what I was hoping for. Anyway, if anyone has some insight I'd appreciate it!

    Essential oils on tpe mat

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 09:47 AM PDT

Just ordered a new mat online and it's coming soon. It's tpe mat so I'm wondering if any of you would put like tea tree oil or lavender oil, to clean. Would that spoil the mat?

My current mat is tpe too but I would like to take better care of my new mat.

There are too many opinions on the net on how to clean your mat. So, asking here.

    Carpal Tunnel Syndrome from Yoga?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 10:46 PM PDT

I have been practicing yoga for about 13 years now. During lockdown at the beginning of the year I fell into a slump and didn't practice at all. When the studios opened up at the beginning of June I went back religiously - 4 to 6 times a week. I always show up early to practice to "warm up", including my hands and feet.

In the middle of August my hands started going numb in the middle of the night, often waking me. It seemed to start out of nowhere. They'd be numb first thing in the morning and I'd have to rub/shake them to get the sensation to go away. I wasn't able to hold my coffee mug by the handle or have much of a grip on things.

As I mentioned, I have been doing yoga for many years, so I initially tried to attribute it to something else. Over-doing the vitamins? Bad mattress? Cycling? So I kept going to yoga.

I kept going until a week and a half ago when the trouble with my hands prevented me from doing downward dog or planks. I thought perhaps a break from yoga might help.

In the past week and a half since I stopped my practice, not only am I still getting the numbness at night, but pain, stiffness, and tingles in my fingertips throughout the day. It is painful trying to grip anything.

I desperately want to return to my practice, but I am afraid to aggravate what I'm sure is carpal tunnel syndrome (and hopefully not arthritis since I'm only 39).

Is there an optimal way to position your hands during downward dog/plank/etc.? I always spread my fingers wide, ground through my middle, index finger, and thumb, then rotate my elbows inward.

    Has anyone else experienced this?

Any Yoga beginner videos that hold poses for a minute or so?

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 01:37 AM PDT

I tried most of the beginner routines in the wiki, and I find them very quick! I barely understand the pose and by the time I get comfortable in the position the instructor moves to something different. It makes it stressful.

    Thank you in advance.
