Posted: 05 Sep 2020 12:51 PM PDT In my regular weekly classes (some of which I had from before and others I gained during lockdown), my students leave their cameras off and the expectation is that I demonstrate each pose, which is not how I'd teach a class in person. Before you ask, I have tried to convince people to leave their cameras on, but people don't want to and I can't force them. With these virtual classes, there's no room to walk around, no students to observe. Also, there are no students for them to observe if they're unsure about a pose or a transition. Instead, they're looking at the screen, to me. I'm finding it really tough for a few reasons. 1) It feels like I'm just narrating my practice and I'm feeling a disconnect from my students. 2) Having to teach while doing the poses is making it harder for me to interocept and listen to my body. 3) Demoing a full class 8-10 times a week is wearing me out and has even caused an old injury to resurface. I'm 30, not 20, and my body is protesting. Can any of the teachers on this sub relate? I would be grateful for any advice. [link] [comments] |
Wrist pain during particular positions Posted: 05 Sep 2020 07:14 PM PDT Hi, i did yoga on and off in the span of 5 years. So this year i haven't done yoga since april. During april when doing plank or downward dog or side plank where the free hand reaches to the sky my wrists started to hurt so i took a break. Then this month i started yoga again, i fixed downward dog so it is not so much an issue anymore but the sequence of planking, side planking and downward dog added pressure to my wrists. I took a 5 min rest and try a side plank on each wrist. My left wrist can hold me but my right is cannot. But overall my both my wrist has tension. I'm puzzled as to why my wrists started to hurt all of a sudden this year. My poses remain the same. [link] [comments] |

I know there was interest in discussing so we can get started if you've read it or are reading it. Share your general thoughts or answer questions below as they come in. Posted: 05 Sep 2020 10:36 AM PDT Hello yogis :) I have been practicing yoga throughout the pandemic and where I live it is very hot throughout the day. This couples with general hyperhydrosis makes my practices extremely sweaty and slippery. I have tried two separate yoga towels for hot yoga, but both have been quite slippery and only grip when they're wet. This means I'd need to sprinkle water on it throughout the session so this is quite inconvenient. Has anyone had any luck with other alternatives? I've looked into cork yoga mats online, so wanted to ask if anyone has had good experiences with them/are they good for yoga? Thanks guys, have a nice Saturday! [link] [comments] |
Putting my knee on the ground hurts… Am I doing something wrong? Posted: 05 Sep 2020 01:48 PM PDT Low lunges are fine but quad stretches keep coming up in YouTube videos and I can't do them because my knee hurts so flippin' bad. I can reach back and pull my foot towards me but, when I try and hold my calf perpendicular to the floor, my knee is like "Nope." I can pull my leg past this point, though, and put weight where my thigh meets my knee, but I feel like this is wrong because my leg is past the 90 degree point. I'm also worried about hurting myself because my leg gets so tense. I got a thicker yoga mat but I still can't hold my leg at the 90 degree angle. Similarly, I've been practicing doing splits, and the thing that's holding me back is how badly my knee hurts when it's pressed against the ground. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Is it "normal?" My BMI is ~35, which is probably the root of my problem, but it's not like "Needs a double knee replacement at 23 years old" level bad... While I'm here, every time I do leg raise type poses, my right hip pops. I've tried Googling it and the only answer I get is "your hips are weak/tight." I don't think my hips are weak/tight, though, because I've never had issues getting into hip poses. It doesn't hurt at all, it's just weird that it's happening and I don't know if I should be concerned. [link] [comments] |
Am I going into the right direction to improve my body's flexibility and yoga practice? Posted: 05 Sep 2020 01:35 PM PDT So my flexibility level is pretty much non-existent at this point; I can't touch my toes, my belly doesn't touch my thighs in forward fold, I don't have the neccesary shoulder flexibility to do downward dog correct (or perhaps the mind-body connection). Anyway, I started doing yoga a couple of months ago during through Alomoves, and it went quite well because I learned things about hand placement, surya namaskar A and B, and I am pretty much stuck at this moment. The point is that my flexibility isn't there and I don't know how to progress from this point on. I know that surya namaskar A and B are the warmups but I suck pretty at them since I don't have the required flexibility to do them exactly right. Now my solution to this problem is to start doing morning yoga, consistently A's and B's paired with relevant static stretches to work on my flexibility, and every other day flexibility classes from Alomoves. Am I going into the right direction to improve my body and yoga practice if I go this way? [link] [comments] |
Any alternatives to corkscrew? Posted: 05 Sep 2020 01:26 PM PDT Corkscrew is a very difficult pose for me. I always feel like my bottom knee is about to pop, the front side of my back leg stretches too far, and my front knee hangs way over my ankle. Are there any somewhat easier poses other than corkscrew that will generally stretch the same muscles? Thank you in advance! [link] [comments] |

Struggling Yogi in TT - Seeking Some Suggestion and Direction Posted: 05 Sep 2020 07:56 AM PDT Hello! I post today to see if I might be able to get some feedback or suggestions to better my body and my practice. I'll preface that I am not new to yoga, I started practicing in 2013 and have mainly practiced on HPF at CorePower with drop ins at small more yoga focused studio throughout my journey. At the start of July, I began and online teacher training (Awakening Yoga Academy). I have been practicing regularly since then, about 5-6 times a week (leading up to the TT, due to COVID, I had not practiced in moths besides a small living room practice here and there). In the past, I've never really "struggled" too much developing strength or holding poses during my practice (even after not meeting my mat for some time). Of course, some poses we're tough or difficult but I rarely "called it quits". At this point, I'm convinced the heated room of HPF made it easier (I could be wrong though) Since the start of this training, I have found myself to struggle almost every time I meet my mat - wether is the ability to hold poses to due their difficulty or just my body being like not-ah. I shake like a leaf more than I can ever remember, I stop practice and pace around my living room in frustration - and I cannot, for the life of me, focus on my breath of keep a consistent pattern. I've started taking magnesium before bed on tough practice days. I make a very nutritious smoothie with plant protein post practices. I try to be good to my body. However, here I am 8 weeks later, and I almost feel more weak than I did at the start of this journey. I was hoping to see if anyone in this community might have any suggestions, directions or resources that might help me with my current struggles. I'm just mentally experiencing this blockage and I find myself getting SUPER frustrated during practice that it's almost unenjoyable. I am not giving up, I'm just really hoping for some direction. Thank you for listening! Namaste. (If this is TLDR - basically I have been practicing for 8 weeks consistently and I shake like a leaf and I'm frustrated). [link] [comments] |
hot yoga shalas in Brooklyn/lower Manhattan? Posted: 05 Sep 2020 07:46 AM PDT Hello brothers and sisters! Sending everyone love and abundance in this moment :) I am moving to Brooklyn next month for a job (will be near Clinton Hill/Williamsburg) and one of the things I will miss the most is a yoga shala that I've been going to for almost a year now here at home. The shala only practices hot yoga and it's more of a community vibe, than a boutique studio vibe. The instructors are all so great and are very passionate about yoga, and all that it encompasses, not just the physical aspect. Does anyone know of any spaces that they enjoy practicing at in Brooklyn/lower Manhattan? I've been trying to do some research and all of the hot yoga I see are Bikram classes...and I'm not sure how I feel about practicing that. I know many places are closed due to the pandemic but I'd I'd appreciate any and all insight you may have for when they do open up! Namaste <3 [link] [comments] |

Is yoga good for popping joints? Posted: 04 Sep 2020 08:02 PM PDT So my shoulders will pop if I rotate them, it feels like the ligaments or muscles in them are popping or moving around. This actually started about a month ago, about 2 months after to starting yoga. At least that I noticed. So my question - is yoga helping these joints or could it potentially be harming them? Only current activity is yoga and light calisthenics. Any recommendations on how to help my shoulder joints is appreciated! Thanks! [link] [comments] |
