How does your body type affect your practice?

    Posted: 05 Oct 2020 05:38 AM PDT

I have super long limbs and a short torso. Because of this, I'm great at binds. In other cases, though, I'm not so lucky. My flows aren't always super smooth as I'll need to readjust my positioning because of where my limbs end up. How about you?

How to help an anterior pelvic tilt?

    Posted: 05 Oct 2020 02:44 PM PDT

I have a pretty pronounced anterior pelvic tilt, where my upper back and buttocks protrude back significantly while my stomach protrudes forward significantly. Like this:

    https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0330/6521/articles/What_is_Anterior_Pelvic_Tilt_f4e13e9b-4e43-4595-8e9c-270ea551d823_600x400_crop_center.progressive.png.jpg?v=1527194671

So if I lay down on a flat surface, my upper back and buttocks are on the ground, but my lower back can't even touch it.

Even though I exercise and eat moderately healthy, it is actually hard for me to do basic exercises, such as sits ups, push ups, and squats. Even running for a minute begins to wind me because of the compression in my chest. I believe that it is because of my posture that is severely undermining my efforts. I stretch for five minutes before a workout or a brisk walk, but doesn't help my spine.

So my question is what are the best or most helpful things I can do to fix this and help my posture? Stretches I can do at home? Should I also consult a specialist? What has helped others with this condition?

Thank you for your patience and time.

Very basic question about pain lying on a mat

    Posted: 05 Oct 2020 04:59 PM PDT

I have never liked yoga because I have never taken even a basic class where there wasn't pain. I have no injuries, no conditions, and nothing painful normally. I'm neither over- nor underweight. However when lying on a mat (or three) I always feel like my weight is being supported on my bones.

So trying to lie on my side feels like 100lbs of pressure on the top of my femur (with the rest of my weight on my shoulder and the rest of my leg). I have no idea where my weight is supposed to be held but it feels like unless I contort myself or engage my muscles to perpetually hold my pelvis up somewhat there is a bone pushed against the floor and it hurts. The same happens with my wrists in downward dog or my spine in positions where I'm on my back.

Other than being told that it's not supposed to feel like that I have never been given any solutions or ideas. Doesn't anyone else have this issue?

At my work I was assigned the exercise/yoga page for our weekly newsletter. Give me cool, interesting or historical facts about yoga, please!

I already have my page almost completely made up but I could definitely use one more interesting tidbit.

Does anyone have a favorite quick bedtime routine?

    Posted: 05 Oct 2020 06:32 PM PDT

My insomnia is really bad right now, and I was advised to create a "bedtime routine" to help signal my brain it's time to wind down. I'm also very busy, so it can't be long, I'm looking for 5 minutes or less. Does anyone have some good ones they'd recommend?

    Thank you! Namaste (:

Does anyone here climb/boulder as well? Wondering if there are any good flows for climbers!

    Pain during tree pose?

    Posted: 05 Oct 2020 03:08 PM PDT

Hi everyone! I am new to this community but have been practicing yoga daily since January 2020. It has been a great coping skill during these crazy times. Recently I took up roller skating and today during my yoga practice I noticed my ankles were in a lot of pain when I was in tree pose. Have my ankles just been overworked lately due to skating also or should I be concerned? They don't usually hurt this much during that pose and today I could barely make it past five breaths. Thank you in advance!

Yoga after broken vertebra and sclerosis

    Posted: 05 Oct 2020 02:05 PM PDT

55F I am 5 weeks post for a burst fracture on T12. I found out that I have sclerosis and my bones are getting weak and degenerative disks. Total surprise because I never had back pain. I go back to the Ortho doctor in two weeks and I want to start physical therapy and yoga. I know there are yoga position that I may never be able to do obviously.

I am wondering if anyone started yoga after a break or using yoga to maintain after finding out about sclerosis or weak bones. Does it help?

    Anxiety/Breathing problems during yoga

    Posted: 05 Oct 2020 06:09 AM PDT

Hi everyone, I have recently been experiencing trouble breathing during yoga class, even in my stretch class, if I hold a pose for too long I end up feeling like I can't breathe, like the beginning of an anxiety attack. Has anyone else ever experienced this?

I do suffer from anxiety which is mostly under control, as in I haven't had a anxiety attack since January. I don't take medication, I use exercise (mainly walking) to control my anxiety and I have done a lot of work on myself.

I cut my big toe. Any suggestions for keeping up with my practice?

    Posted: 05 Oct 2020 01:01 PM PDT

I cut one of my big toes last night. I can put basic weight on it but I definitely don't want to push it and make things worse.

Any tips, tricks, or even links to practices that may help me keep up while letting my body heal?

    Thank you!

    About yoga bolsters

    Posted: 04 Oct 2020 11:08 PM PDT

Hello everybody, I have to say that for me there has been one positive outcome from the forced stay at home during the pandemic: I have truly and wholly taken up a yoga routine 6 days of the week. Before the pandemic my daily exercise routine consisted of weight lifting at the gym and walking. I just never found the time to do yoga too. Now with so much time at home I have created my own exercise routine with light weights and yoga. So, at the same time I have discovered some yoga assistive equipment that makes some poses easier to do for me (64 y old 🥴). And that brings me to the reason for this posting, I'd like to buy a rectangular yoga bolster that is firm but not so heavy to move around. I bought the one from Yoga Direct but I'm returning it because it weighs a ton. If any of you yogis with more experience could recommend some good quality ones I'd appreciate it. Also if you know of a store in Tucson or Marana where they sell them so I can actually see/touch it before buying it that'd be even better. So far and just from doing my homework on the net I'm leaning towards the Manduka ones but as I said above not sure. Any info much appreciated. Thanks☺️

Audio Only? (Videos are fine, but I prefer only listening)

    Posted: 04 Oct 2020 08:48 PM PDT

Is there any apps that's clear enough by audio only? I like listening to most of the guidance and not look for visuals every two minutes. Is there any videos or apps that you use and find yourself not needing to look up for visuals much? Thank you!
