    My first year of yoga

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 10:03 PM PDT

On September 10 last year I randomly took my first yoga class at age 53. Male here. I instantly fell in love with it. And have gone back every single day since. Yoga played a decisive role in my quitting drinking in December of last year. I have lost 45 pounds and am now a yoga stick insect ;-)

Anyway, enough about me. I realize my experience of yoga is a bit odd. i'm older. and i'm a bit of a nut. but i completely and utterly fell in love with yoga. and hot yoga. all of them.

here are the things that i have noticed and loved about yoga.

    1. i now move like Baryshnikov or Nureyev. take your pick. I cannot believe how much more graceful and balanced I am. it's very strange and very welcome. i notice it all the time.
    2. core strength. it exists apparently. and now i have some of it. and it's great.
    3. i still can't really and truly nail warrior 2 without focusing. and that's after about 400 consecutive daily hours of yoga. they make it look so easy in the yogurt ads.
    4. My hips were clearly fused at birth. This will clearly take a lot of time.
    5. Cork mats are great. I sweat profusely at 95 degrees or higher.
    6. My forearms look like a cartoon character from all the downward dogging. Yoga builds muscles i hadn't even considered before. Obliques? hadn't a clue what they were. Still don't really tbh.
    7. I love the feminine energy i find at most studios. All my teachers are female (i belong to two studios. three if you count corepower but not since Covid.). And I love their enthusiasm. they all just radiate goodness and positivity. and i love the inspiration/meditative thoughts they put in my head before class.
    8. I love what yoga has done to my body. yoga, like drinking, will catch up with you. six pack abs at my age feels like one of those cheesy 80s body swap movies.
    9. i love what yoga has done for my mind. it gives me peace. an hour of yoga is an hour of meditation too.
    10. I love the potentially eternal nature of yoga. Now that i'm fit and have stamina and can relax in class I only now see how much fun it is too. I can do crow pose now. so i'm not a total loser.

That's it. Have to go freeze a washcloth for my hot yoga class tomorrow morning. I invented the frozen washcloth for hot yoga. looks like a face cloth, feels like heaven. Namaste!

    Yoga Encyclopedia

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 12:28 PM PDT

I would love to find a good book that explains yoga poses, the techniques behind them, the inspirations, really anything to do with yoga. Looking for something like an encyclopedia with an extensive list of poses. I've practiced for many years and I'm looking for some new and creative poses I may not have experienced in my classes. Send me your best yoga book recommendations! Thanks!

    RIP my beloved yoga mat...

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 04:57 PM PDT

Did anyone else lose their mat due to COVID-19? My studio shut down permanently with 12 hours notice (due to the city's SIP order) and so there was no time to pick up stored mats. I had that mat for five years, and it was pretty expensive. I'm having trouble letting go and replacing it, which is messing up my home practice.

Thoughts on Cat Meffan's Soul Sanctuary membership?

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 04:02 PM PDT

I'm starting to get to a point in my practice where I need more interesting, challenging, longer sequences. I finally have the extra budget to do a paid membership of some kind for a yoga streaming service. I've really enjoyed Cat Meffan's flows on YouTube and was wondering if anyone has become a paid member of her platform and what they think of it so far? I'm looking for more challenging balance postures, standing, inverted, etc., as well as more variation in the styles and types of flows. I'm also interested in mindfulness techniques.

Attention and awareness in yoga practice

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 08:11 AM PDT

    Hi Everyone!

I have been doing sun salutations every morning for the last year, and my body feels great after doing so. Afterwards I typically sit for 30 minutes and meditate, where I focus my attention on the breath and keep my awareness open on thoughts, emotions, bodily sensations and the overall quality of my mind (meta introspective awareness).

This morning I noticed that my morning yoga practice is pretty much a pure bodily exercise, and that I miss the mind and spirit oriented parts of the exercise. I do follow my breath in the excercise, but that is pretty much it and I don't feel any more rejuvenated in my mind or soul after the exercise. Somehow I feel as if I am missing out on a very important aspect of it.

So my question to you is: What do you do with your attention and awareness when you do your yoga? Or how do you exercise your mind and spirit at the same time as you exercise your body in yoga?

    Kind regards,
    Christian

What has your experience been with Akhandayoga?

I am looking for an online platform that offers both Yoga and the traditional philosophy teachings. What has your experience with Akhandayoga been like?

What equipment do you lot use to talk and record your stuff via zoom?

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 01:13 AM PDT

i asked this on a different forum and it got no answers so im gonna ask here, hope you lot dont mind

Hello im new to this music setup so please hear me out

My mom is a Yoga instructor and wants to teach via zoom.

she is looking to get the SHURE BLX 14/H10 CVL Wireless Lavalier Microphone.

Shes tried wireless earphones and microphones but never an expensive setup such as the shure

    iv a couple of questions.

    1. shes going to be doing handstands and other things that require being upside or in a similiar position. Will the headset fall off?

    2. im lookng at the manual and it connects to an AMP which we have. im assuming the AMP then connects to the laptop or does it? Can the Reciever be connected directly to the laptop or would that defeat the purpose or just not work

    thanks

edit: i realize my title is misleading and only realized now. The question should of been for headsets. Sorry

Recommendation for programmes/flows to increase standing balance?

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 01:45 AM PDT

I've really enjoyed Yoga With Kassandra'a one month of splits training which was 30 days of videos of varying length - some yin and some flows. It has really improved my hip and hamstring flexibility and awareness !

Next I really want to improve my balance in standing poses so I get to relax into the poses and was hoping for something similar.

Anyone know of a programme or a channel with a good amount of classes focusing on balance ?

I do try and close my eyes in ie standing side twist or warrior I and II which helps - but hoping for more practice in the standing poses.

    Thanks Namaste🙏

    Yoga Nidra issues

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 12:02 PM PDT

Hello everyone, I am wondering if someone could give me some advice or suggestions, I recently discovered yoga nidra and it has been amazing however no matter what I do I can not seem to get the right side of my body comfortable. It is like my right side is shorter than my left and it is always left with this terrible tension in the groin and knee area when I try to relax. It is very offputting to my practice even though I have powered through it once before. It is disheartening because this has led me to stop my asana practice while I attend Physical therapy as suggested by my doctor (which doesn't even seem to be helping much) and I am just feeling helpless.. I have tried pillows under the knee but it just seems to accentuate the imbalance and the tension even more. Should I find a yoga teacher? If so where do I even go for that? What kind of yoga is possible for me to do and not experience pain? Is it ok to move around during yoga nidra? I really need help on this yoga means a lot to me.
