Will doing a stretch for 5 seconds 12 times do the same good as doing the same stretch for a minute once?

Pain on calves when bending over, but not when isolating

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 01:34 AM PST

Something that's always been in the way of me. improving my flexibility is this radiating pain I have behind my calves when I stand up and attempt to touch my toes. This isn't something that happens when I isolate the stretches to my hamstrings or my calves. It's kind of a sharp radiating pain that I start to feel when I reach some limit, and this limit actually increases the more I bear with the pain. It doesn't feel like a stretch, it's straight up pain. If anyone has any insight on what might be the issue please me know what I can try. I've looked into Sciatic Nerve flossing and it kind of helps but isn't consistent.

    Addicted to stretching

    Posted: 11 Nov 2020 05:33 PM PST

Recently, I've been trying out hip/hamstring stretches. I have gone from being able to barely touch my toes with the tips of my fingers to placing my palms flat on the ground with a bit of resistance. However, the stretch reflex feels amazing to me for some reason, as the resistance is still enough for me to only hold it for ten seconds at most. But my instinct is the only thing stopping me from holding it forever. It feels amazing in a way that I don't know if stretching should. Is pleasure in stretch reflex natural? Should I be concerned?

What to do at the last rep of the PNF stretching for the side splits?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2020 10:10 PM PST

So you do stretch, tense for 5s, stretch further, tense for 5s, so on until you cannot stretch any more. At this last rep where you are at the maximal range of motion, you are to do 30s of tensing. However, when I get to that last rep where I am at the maximal range of motion, I can only tense for like 2s. So now my question is which one of these am I supposed to do?:

    1. Just tense for 2s at the maximal range of motion.
    2. Come up a bit to the point where I can tense for 30s.
    3. Hold onto a chair or something where I can decrease the load in order to do 30s tense at the maximal range of motion.

Which one is the correct way to do the PNF stretching?

    Help with straddle

    Posted: 11 Nov 2020 05:51 PM PST

Hey so my back just won't bend with the straddle stretch, I can feel it's "locked" in the mid spine. I've tried resistance bands to force me forward and nothing. Any advice or tips?

    Splits and Lifting

    Posted: 11 Nov 2020 04:55 PM PST

Hey so I need some advice y'all.

So I'm a male in my 20s whose been trying to do my middle and front splits, but I'm also trying to weight lift and get lean at the same time. Should I do my stretches after being really sore from leg day? If so how should I go about it since I (like a lot of other lifters) lift hard and end up having trouble walking and using the stairs. I did legs for the first time in a while and I've been sore for 2 days (pretty usual for the first leg day in a while). Is weight lifting (particularly legs) killing my stretching progress? I've been trying to incorporate my foam roller into it too if that helps.

Does flexing the muscles while stretching help with flexibility?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2020 04:19 AM PST

I hold a stretch and as I'm holding it I'll flex/tense all the muscles in that area, then I'll increase the stretch a little at a time. It's seemed to help with my straddle stretching, but that might just be a coincidence?

Splits progress after 12 months. Slow going fr.

Unfortunately my MRI scan came back with more than a few findings. I have to take it easy on splits, but at least I can keep back bending! Here's a vlog for a little day in the life of a contortionist in training :)

    Biggest flexibility related pet peeves?

    Posted: 10 Nov 2020 08:47 PM PST

I'm feeling really salty tonight, so can we all complain together?

I'll go first. I can't stand teachers who refuse to warm up the room before a stretching class. Or other students who complain that it's too warm during the active portions. Yes, you are warm. That's the point!

And I can't stretch well at home either cause my husband can't physically exist in a space that's warmer than 70 degrees. Ugh.
