Yoga: Beginners: Blocks are not a sign of weakness

Yoga: Beginners: Blocks are not a sign of weakness

Beginners: Blocks are not a sign of weakness

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 01:23 PM PST

I've taught yoga a bit and also love attending the wonderful classes other teachers offer in my community. Often i notice that strong people come into class and perceive it as wimpy to use blocks while doing yoga. I know I didn't want to use them at first, I thought it was "cheating". Then I listened to my teachers and became a little wiser. I now use them a lot myself due to having shorter arms and a longer torso. Some people have certain muscles that are just extremely tight. By using the blocks you can get the targeted muscles to soften and lengthen because you've brought ease and alignment into other muscle groups. Listen to your instructors that invite modifications to poses and leave your ego at the door. May you be happy, safe, and peaceful. May you find ease in your body and in your life.🧘‍♀️

Edited to add: Obviously I'm not saying use a block/prop for every pose. Most of the time by listening to both your instructor's cues and listening to your body's feedback you will know when to use props and when to leave them alone.

Please help with t spine flexibility!

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 08:07 PM PST

I tried absolutely everything to increase my upper back (thoracic spine) flexibility but nothing is working. (Not even little progress) I have really muscular upper back and shoulders and this might make it harder, but please give me tips! My upper back and shoulders are tighter than anything in this world and nothing is increasing their flexibility

    Achilles strain/pain during warrior poses

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 06:04 PM PST

I'm pretty new to yoga - I've only been practicing consistently for about two months. As I've gotten more comfortable with my practice, I've started incorporating more warrior poses, which has led to a lot of strain/pain in my Achilles during warrior 1 and 2. I think my form is alright, and I've tried taking a more narrow stance but nothing seems to help take the strain off. Lately, my legs (Achilles and also the front of my foot/shin) have been hurting even when I'm not practicing. Have any of you experienced this? Does anyone have tips for reducing strain?

    Ways to practice good breathing?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 07:05 AM PST

I struggle a lot with breathing during physical exercise and usually go full apnoea without realizing.

Does anyone else experience this? Any way to fix this and practice good breathing during the day?

If you’re working from home do you take mini asana breaks throughout the day?

    Mula Bandha and Excess Energy

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 12:39 PM PST

Namaste, Mula Bandha can certainly get someone's attention when a Yogasm happens. I see a lot of articles about it and it is always presented as something to smile about. None of those articles talked about any mishaps or unfortunate situations of accidental Kundalini awakening or PGAD/not being able to dissipate the energy and always having an orgasmic feeling. Is the average practitioner liable to fall into something they didn't bargain for, akin to a bad trip? It seems like someone would have to really put in time and effort to go down a rabbit hole they can't get out of. I am a male and I had an experience where I learned stuff about the area just under me that I never knew about. It was not Spiritual or intended to be, and it was exhilarating to accomplish (holy ****!) but the afterbuzz in the perineum and the rosy cheeks, warm thighs, and flutters/ jitters days later made it seem like a permanent disturbing condition that I brought upon myself. I hope to get out of this post a bunch of laughs, with experienced Yoga people telling me to relax and that this is to be expected and that it wears off. It sounds like it's a healthy thing though if not abused.

Just tried ashtanga yoga for the first time...

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 10:33 PM PST

... and wow is it hard! I managed a whole 7 minutes before bowing out.

Does anyone have any tips for building the time up? I'd like to include ~30 minutes of ashtanga into my morning routine 3-4 times a week as it definitely got the blood flowing!

Please let me know what you think of this sequence for daily practice

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 04:41 AM PST

I am a beginner, but have done a few dozen classes over the years. I never stuck with it, but now feel motivated to make it a daily routine to practice yoga at home. This past summer I did about a dozen classes with an excellent instructor in a friend's backyard, but it got too cold to continue (I live in Canada). I don't want to go to in person indoor classes now, due to COVID, so I am trying to practice daily on my own. I am in my late 50s, male, not flexible at all. While I like the youtube channel Yoga with Adriene, and have found other youtube videos and yoga apps, I prefer to do it on my own, and just take things at my own pace, and hold poses long enough to work on strength and flexibility. That being said, I plan to occasionally still do yoga with videos, to get reminders about refining form, position, and other details.

I made a list of poses, with a plan to do Sun salutations first (3-5 each of A and B), then spend about one minute on each pose. I figure this would give me about a 45-50 minute workout, which I could shorten on days when I have less time available. Please let me know what you think of my list, and the order I put it in. Any basic poses I have left out? Would you change the order? Would it be better to do less poses (and if so, which would you omit)? Is it better to do some poses on some days, alternating days, or is it fine to do all of them daily?

here is my list: (I left out crow pose, camel pose, headstands, and a few others that seem more advanced, that I may tackle after I am in much better shape)

    Side angle pose (Utthita Parsvarkonasana)

    Triangle (Utthita Trikonasana)

Cat/Cow (Marjaryasana/Bitilasana) - option: extend arm and opposite leg

Plank (Kumbhakasana) and side plank (Vasisthasana)

    Low plank (Chaturanga dandasana)

    Cobra pose (Bhugangasana)

Upward facing dog (Urdhva Mukha Svanasana)

Downward dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana) - option: 3 legged dog

Crescent lunge (Anjaneyasana) on ball of back foot - option: start with low lunge

    Tadasana (mountain pose)

    Uttanasana (Standing forward bend)

    Tree pose (Vrksasana)

Urdhva Hastasana (upward salute) - option: do side bends

Chair pose - knees bent, arms straight up (Utkatasana)

    One-legged chair (Eka Pada Utkatasana)

Lord of the dance pose (dancer's pose) - Natarajasana

Utthita Padangusthasana (standing big toe hold) - start with just leg extended in front

Warrior pose (virabhadrasana) - I, II, III

Prasarita Padottanasana (wide legged standing forward bend)

    Half moon pose (Ardha Chandrasana)

Garland pose (Malasana) - deep squat

    Virasana (hero pose)

    Child's pose (Balasana)

Apanasana (on back, knees to chest) - or do one leg at a time

Supta Matsyendrasana (supine, spine twist, knees to one side, looking other way)

    Bridge (Setu Bandha Sarvangasana)

Ardha Purvottanasana (reverse table top, also called upward plank)

    Boat pose (Paripurna Navasana)

    Happy baby (Ananda Balasana)

Eye of the Needle pose - on back, one leg crossed on other (Sucirandhrasana)

    Dandasana (staff pose)

    Paschimottanasana (seated forward bend)

Cobbler's pose (Baddha Konasana) - sit with feet soles together, knees to sides

Head to knee - sitting, one leg straight, foot against thigh (Janu Sirsasana)

Half lord of the Fishes (Ardha Matsyendrasana) - seated twist

Seated wide angle straddle (legs straight, out 45) - Upavistha Konasana

    Anger over a stolen mat

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 09:29 PM PST

    Hey all,

My mat recently disappeared from its place in the yoga studio where I practice. I think someone took it home by accident, mistaking it for their mat, giving them the benefit of the doubt. However I am so angry and frustrated over it and I feel violated.. It was also new and rather expensive. How do I deal with the anger I feel coming back to the studio, and suspecting every other practitioner for being the one that took my mat??

(we practice outside in line with covid-19 regulations)

Is there a name for this pose? Or is this not yoga? Thought it looked cool.
